IMO snow tires are far more important than 4WD or AWD for winter driving

Can't tell you how many  4WD vehicles with crappy summer tires I have seen in the ditch or spinning out at stoplights on slight inclines, while I effortlessly cruise on past in my FWD sedan with snow tires

Snow tires + AWD or 4WD is practically unstoppable

And even more important than either of those, for any driver but especially teens, is defensive driving and knowing how to drive in winter conditions

12/19/2018 - 10:37am Dax Hill obviously

Dax Hill obviously

Charbonnet could too. I

In 2016, the lead back (D Smith) got 32% of the carries, Evans got 15%, Higdon got 13%, Isaac got 13%

In 2017 Higdon got 31%, Evans 26%, Isaac 17%, Walker 4%

In 2018 Higdon got 43%, Evans 14%, Wilson 11%, Mason 6%

I envision more RBBC (a la 2017) so a true starter could be unlikely. But I think it's reasonable to say that Charbonnet could get 25% of the carries next year depending on how things shake out with Christian Turner and how they want to use Evans. And Tru Wilson is probably in line for some decent snaps too.

Mazi has got to play some now that our DT depth is poor

12/19/2018 - 8:48am I must know!

I must know!

10/02/2018 - 9:26am Scripted plays are carefully…

Scripted plays are carefully put together set of plays, based on your film review of the other team

You are hoping to catch the defense in some of their tendencies with a couple plays, and then play off of the previous plays with a clever constraint or twist on those plays

They have another advantage of your offense knowing those plays, and getting some extra practice on them in advance. Whereas the defense has less knowledge of what the offense is going to do, and cannot simultaneously script plays to counter the offenses scripted plays.

This is the advantage that offense has (dictating plays) vs defense (reacting to the offense)

Our defense DOES adjust to this. Why do you think that we're kicking ass in the 2nd half?

Homebrewed blonde ale for me now

It's a blustery rainy night though, so later on I'll probably do some whiskey

either Iron Fish Maple Bourbon (from Manistee!) or Suntory Toki

Cramps had nothing to do with S&C either week

Hidgon is good confirmed

Offensive line...not terrible confirmed

QB situation is good. That was a weak as hell holding call, DMac has some wheels! I thought we did a good job of taking open throws for the most part. Easy to see why DMac passed Peters now. Wonder if Peters will transfer after the season

Ronnie Bell will be a good one. So will Turner

Glad they are using some variety on the jet sweep package instead of being so predictable

Can't wait to see what we can do if the tackle situation gradually improves

Funny, the play action pass on 2nd and 1 elicited a "FINALLY!" for me when the play was happening

I thought it was a great call.

Don't confuse outcomes with strategies

09/02/2018 - 3:30pm I think one of the reasons I…

I think one of the reasons I am so disappointed is that I *don't* think that ND's offense is better than we thought

I thought we got outcoached and they caught a couple lucky breaks. We played right into their only strengths on offense - QB scrambling and chucking up long balls

They shredded us because we came out too aggressive and ran by Wimbush. We broke contain so many times

Gil should have had an easy sack but came in out of control. Gary and Winovich got too far upfield countless times

Hawkins should have had an INT on the touchdown pass, he played it perfectly and then inexplicably shorted his jump/let the ball go through his hands

Outside of those tactical mistakes we made and failure to make a couple plays we were in position for, ND couldn't get jack shit going on offense.

09/02/2018 - 9:25am My expectations are that we…

My expectations are that we beat the shit out of the unranked teams, the tackle play gets a little better, we clean up the stupid mistakes, and then we go on to struggle with MSU, PSU, OSU, Wisconsin

I liked what I saw out of the QB position, given what they had to work with in terms of protection

I am going to say 9-3 or 8-4. We beat Penn State, and maybe MSU. Mark Wisconsin and OSU down as sure losses

Unless the tackle play gets figured out and Hudson or Mayfield take a GIANT leap forward, we just don't have the offensive horses to run with a good defense

09/02/2018 - 9:21am It's not bizarre at all…

It's not bizarre at all. Hoke fucked us at the QB position through under-recruiting and bad recruiting and development

The cupboard was pretty bare

Last night you saw Patterson and McCaffery both look pretty good. Speight looked good when his OL gave him time to throw. Rudock looked good too

The common thread is that the OL play, particularly pass blocking, has been atrocious

if we had even AVERAGE tackle play, this is a Top 5 team the last 3 years

But we have basement-dwelling tackle play, so we're a middle of the road team in the 20-30 range

08/24/2018 - 2:00pm What do you mean by Iggy is…

What do you mean by Iggy is a black hole on offense? Did you mean defense?

He scored 15 points in the game and I thought he looked pretty decent. He's probably going to be our 3rd leading scored behind Poole and Matthews IMO

08/23/2018 - 6:45pm And even, and even if we win…

And even, and even if we win, if we win, HAH! Even if we win! Even if we play so far over our heads that our noses bleed for a week to ten days. Even if God in Heaven above comes down and points his hand at our side of the field. Even if every man, woman and child held hands together and prayed for us to win, it just wouldn't matter, because all the really good looking girls would still go out with the guys from Mohawk cause they've got all the money! It just doesn't matter if we win or we lose. IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER!

Do yourself a favor and read a book or watch a documentary on Shackleton... truly one of the world's most amazing stories. The sheer fortitude of will, navigation prowess, and endurance (truly an appropriate ship name for the man) to do what they did is nothing short of incredible

I hope when we roll out the offense against Notre Dame it'll be like that scene in Happy Gilmore when Happy displays his newfound putting chops and Shooter McGavin looks scared

Isn't it a bit premature to conclude that DPJ is not on special teams? Just the fact that he wasn't among a few people mentioned in an interview is not really conclusive evidence he's off punt return imo. Unless explicitly stated that someone else is going to be returning punts for sure in lieu of DPJ

07/30/2018 - 6:45pm I think the reason is more…

I think the reason is more simple. There's not that much to talk about.

Shea is the presumed starter. We won't know more about how he looks until fall camp.

Pretty much everybody is back on defense, no real questions there. It'll be amazing again.

Same skill positions on offense, more or less the same OL guys. We won't know how that's looking til fall camp

What's there really to say? We think we'll be good, few questions, only question is how the pass pro and QB play will look like. That'll be the difference between a 8 win season and a 12 win season

07/21/2018 - 6:07pm I have been brewing for 14…

I have been brewing for 14 years. Started out extract, now I do all grain. I do BIAB, although I mash in my cooler. Holds mash temps well and super easy to clean.

I have a great Wild Rice ESB, a Two Hearted "Lite" clone, that's 4.5% instead of 7% like the real thing, and a maple brown ale going right now. And a porter that is ready to be bottled.

I mostly brew hoppy session beers, but do a couple browns/porters for the winter months. And I am planning on doing my first kettle sours in the next month or two. A berliner weiss and a sour brown with some montmorency cherries

07/21/2018 - 6:03pm Just FYI, I brew with Lake…

Just FYI, I brew with Lake Michigan water as well, and you still need to add a bit of acid (lactic, phosphoric, or acidulated malt) to hit ideal mash pH especially in light beers. Yes, you can make good beer with straight tap water out of Lake Michigan, but it will improve if you pay attention to mash pH

And you also may want to add chloride or sulfate, depending on the beer style you are brewing

Online. Blue Nile or James Allen are good choices. I'll spare the rant about diamonds being overpriced, overmarketed, and depreciate like crazy

Don't spend too much unless your partner really really values the bling. Some people really like flaunting it, others don't like bulky, or want to only wear a wedding band most of the time. Opinions are all over the place.

Don't limit yourself to diamonds either - lots of cool gemstones out there.

A conversation about stones and rings and such in advance is wise and could save yourself grief and money down the line. Unless you want to pop the question out of the blue, obviously, or already know something about her ring preferences from talking to friends or family.

I'm not sure how you can NOT see a Viper in his film. He's practically playing the same role in his HS defense. He lines up in the slot, in the box, deep safety. Looks like he has excellent instincts and awareness, sure tackler, great hands, ball hawk, covers lots of ground. Great anticipation on some of his interceptions. Reads plays quickly, acts decisively

I am VERY excited for him in both baseball and FB

Probably do some mushroom hunting, bass and bluegill fishing on the lake, maybe some trout fishing on the Au Sable if I can squeeze it in

And, of course fires and brews every night

In that regard, would it kinda make sense to defend our front with them this round, instead of attacking? And hope that they get unlucky and lose another territory... then attack when they are down to 1 or 2 territories?

05/15/2018 - 2:23pm You hate it because it is

You hate it because it is different. That's what we're all on here griping about

But the backlash won't happen on a widespread level, because the people against it will be 6 feet under, or in a nursing home not buying cars anymore. The up and coming generations will be used to those features and probably not demand a reversal. Perceptions/reality of conviencence and safety are easily entrenched and hard to revert back to earlier versions

Sure, maybe there will be a few niche "retro" analog cars, but the future is more automated, more integrated, and there's not much that is going to stop that

05/15/2018 - 2:17pm They will eventually be

They will eventually be automated. But I peg it at 20 years before it's widespread

There's a lot of legal hurdles in addition to the logistical ones. Plus public acceptance. Just like when elevators became automated and people freaked out.

You can already see it in the media, huge news every time there is a fender bender involving a self driving car, or some jackass in a Tesla ignores the proper procedures and gets in a big wreck using autopilot. Meanwile the 50 other car crashes that day get ignored

Even if the technology aspect gets solved, the legal and acceptance hurdles are a higher bar to clear IMO

05/15/2018 - 1:48pm Sure seems like some funny

Sure seems like some funny business is at hand, given the size of OSU vs Michigan teams and how things have played out

A few comments were made about it on the subreddit with people bearing Michigan flair, and have since dissapeared

Mine is that cars are bigger than they used to be. The new Tacoma is as big as 10 year old Tundras

New F150s are bigger than old F350s

Ironically, you have it precisely backwards

Back in the day, the rigid car didn't crumple - your body did. That wonderfully solid feeling body, nice hard dashboard, and rigid construction transferred all the energy to your nice soft fleshy body

Now the car crumples so your body doesn't

05/12/2018 - 9:25pm IMO, carb counting for beer

IMO, carb counting for beer is silly. Either don't drink beer or don't worry about the carbs in it!

A regular craft beer has between 10 and 20 grams of carbs. That's practically nothing.  Light american lagers have almost zero carbs. Miller Lite has 3 g of carbs.

Marketing has successfully convinced a lot of people that going from a dozen carbs to 2 carbs is going to make you slim or feel better

You could always drink one nice, real beer rather than several crappy low carb beers...

Check out Dale Bowman's wednesday fishing report in the Tribune (and online, you can google him). That will give you a lot to think about!

05/02/2018 - 12:40pm Fish the rip-rap and current

Fish the rip-rap and current seams near bridges in Gallup Park in low-light hours if you want walleyes. There are not massive quantities of them but they can be caught. Jig and minnow, or split shot and a crawler on a small hook. You'll catch smallmouth too

Probably a mixed bag right below the Argo dam spillway right now. Crappie, bass, walleye, a pike or two

There are more pike upstream - the Argo pond pool has many more than the Gallup pool. Focus on the weed edges once they are apparent. Spinnerbaits are a good choice, as are swim jigs and chatterbaits. Some monster largemouth and smallmouth too

Bass are everywhere. In the slack water areas of Gallup and Argo ponds, fish jigs, plastics, cranks, spinnerbaits along the weed edges, up in the slop and under trees.

In the flowing areas there are plentiful smallmouth. lots of good wading inside Ann Arbor city limits, and also up towards Dexter, and down by Ypsi.

04/28/2018 - 7:48am So, this is going to be a

So, this is going to be a recurring problem, as you have a great food source - the birdfeeder. Even if you remove the current (1? 3? 10?) racoons after it, next year or the year after, some more will find it and you're back to square 1

The best way to solve the problem is to remove the food source. Buuuut since you probably really like watching the birds at the feeder, the next best solution would be to try to racoon proof it via hanging on a wire, shields, etc. Lots of ideas online on how to do this

If you're dead set on the sisyphean battle of leaving the feeder as is, and only dealing directly with the racoons, the hav-a-hart traps work well. Bait with peanut butter and marshmallows

Like CTS said, you have to take them a long ways to get rid of them, which presents several problems - you are transporting a critter that could have parasites/disease, which is not the best. Also you're transporting it out of its home range, which can result in low survival rates of translocated racoons. Third, you generally are not permitted to release them on public land in most states, which means you are stuck breaking the law, or need to get permission from someone 10+ miles away
