Are There any 'Pros' to Weigh Against the 'Cons' of an Early B10 Conf Tourney

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

Trying to find some form of silver lining in having such an early conference tournament.  The B10 winner will be known by March 4th....and then what?   The first NCAA games that concern us start on 3/15, a full 11 days later (see schedule below).

So my question is simply this:  What good things come from having so much time between games?  Do the players heal up and rest up some?   Do they get more school work and mid-terms out of the way?  Maybe the coaches have a bit more time to scout and game plan against the most likely opponents?   I would love to hear some positives about the extended lay-off, so please share.

EDIT:  How about Beilein does something totally crazy, more than subs, actually Harbaugh crazy and takes the team somewhere for spring break?  Since it turns out that the off week is during the spring break, hey, California/Florida/Arizona, wherever, off they go.  Too late to arrange for pass ports to go out of the country, but what the heck.

Is Michigan’s spring break? I think Beilein and co have no choice but to try to see it as a plus and get the team fine tuned and into fantastic shape. They can maybe even get in prep for any unusualoffenses or defenses they will see.

Will be able to incorporate all the BTT games into their seeding. The committee doesn't throw the bracket together at 2pm on selection Sunday. It's usually done by Saturday night. The Sunday games on selection sunday, and to a lesser extent the Saturday night games, don't have a huge effect on the bracket. This year though with the tourney being early all the BTT games will be factored in by the committee.

Last year, it seemed like the selection committee already had us locked into our seed, regardless of winning the tournament championship. Probably because they couldn't do any major revisions hours before the bracket release.

This year, they'll have a full week to examine everyone's body of work before any other conference.

The teams in the big ten that perform poor in the big ten tourney and reach sweet 16 will be saying that they just needed the batteries recharged.  While those that get bounced early in the big ten tourney the rust card will be played upon no end.

The only positive I can think of is more rest time for the players before the start of March Madness. I guarantee you that if the Big Ten does well in the tournament, Delany will site this as the reason and keep the BTT when it is this year.

when they did this it was to get better seeds for the b1g, but not sure if that applies at all this year?    We used to be one of the last games before the seeds came out.      I think it would have helped all of us in the past, but with the wake of what is going on with reports....     Its just time to waste and time to reflect.      I really think it hurts us now if some have some big wins on selection weekend.

Is what it is so deal with it and play ball!    We have no excuse if we don't show up in the round of 64 either way.    Gotta win by 20 and move on.

I kinda hope we are a 7 tho.    It will get us ready and fast.

the Big Ten only needed to move up the championship game a few hours. They have always played the last game and have the time slot on TV to themselves by design.

The seeding hasn't been an issue. Last year the Big Ten got underseeded except for Minnesota. That wasn't because of one late game and it hasn't been a problem other years.

Pros: MSG is sweet, we play great at MSG, time to rest, time to heal from all wounds, time to practice and fix simpsons free throws and matthews offense, if we win the thing it will actually get counted for seeding.

It allows us to play in NEW YORK! Where we can enjoy the expanded footprint of the big ten by both watching the B1G Network (surely it must be standard in every NY TV by now!) and by visiting the beautiful campus of Rutgers university... Which I’ve been told is not a MAC team, but actually a full fledged member of the conference. What other benefits would you want?

The only time a team is healthy is before the season begins.... After the onset of pre-season practice, health is a waxing and waning percentage below 100 individually and therefore collectively. In short, compacting a season egregiously eliminates recovery resulting in compounded insult which cannot be restored in the timeframe provided by the condors experiment resulting in zero comparative advantages. Did he ever publicly articulate his reason(s) for selecting this abbreviated path?

will get a better seed.   The bracket/seed is set prior to the championship game since it is normally played so late for committee to finish bracket.  Kinda explains why champ seed hasn't been as high as people thought in recent years.

If we're going to have a tournament one week early, better this year; we have two fewer Conference games this season than we will next season.

Also, I've heard some who know basketball far better than I do speculate on the effects of playing 3 or 4 games over one weekend, and then rolling into the NCAA Tournament the next week.  Some have said that teams that finished first or second in the regular season and are already getting a favorable seed in the NCAA Tournament are better off losing the first or second game in the conference tournament.  The fatigue of playing so many games in one weekend affects their energy in the Big Dance.  Well, if that is the case, then having an extra week will ensure all B1G teams will be a fresh as possible for NCAAs, even if they played every round of the B1G Tournament.

Oh the whole, though, the B1G Tournament a week early is not good.

I wonder if this is going to impact seeding at all. If that last week of not playing makes it harder for a bubble team to get in because they haven’t played in a week and there is an aspect of out of sight out of mind. I guess we will see how it all shakes down but other than trying to copy the Big East

We're playing as good as we've been all year going into the conference tournment on what will be reasonable rest, so I am fine with that, but having nearly two weeks to sit before the NCAA torunament bothers me a lot, especially if we're still  playing really well and make a decent showing in the conference tournament. I just have a fear of losing that momentum and being prone to a disappointing performance later in March.

The only real upside here is that Madison Square Garden is a great place to play a game (or several), IMHO,

I think the clear positive is that it gives JB 11 days to come up with and install something unique or unseen. I realize basketball isn't like football where there are new plays consistently added that have a major impact, but I would not be surprised to see a small hitch added to the offense that plays a huge role in a potential 4-5 matchup come mid March. Also, although I would much rather play a week later, the appeal of MSG is sort of cool.

But in a normal year, the team ends their tourney run and immediately gets their seeding. I imagine the little practice they have between Selection Sunday and their first game is spent on specifics for handling their first opponent (or two).

If there is general stuff to work on at this point, next week can be focused on that, then there should be plenty of time to gameplan for the tourney matchup too.

Also, I have tickets to the semifinal so I'll (hopefully) get to see the boys in action!

I'm against the move, but there are a couple pros:

- Play in MSG, which is cool

- Added exposure - we'll be the only major conference tournament going on this week.  Less competition with other conference tourneys.  Probably better ratings for most of the day/early evening games.

- Personal game watching - I'll watch a decent amount of the BTT whether it's this week or next week.  Now, I'll end up watching (aka betting on) more of the other conference tourneys.

This was all a play for BTN! They now have 10 games of the tourney this year(all the weekday games). In my mind this is a way to get more viewers to the channel. So more Jon Crispin for all of us...said no one ever!

Largely, it's bad.  Out of sight, out of mind for the committee, teams lose momentum if they do well in BTT, and a week+ without competitive basketball is a recipe for coming out cold the first weekend of the tournament.

As for pros...umm (1) gets injured/banged up guys time to rest and recover, (2) gives Beliein time to come up with some crazy scheme for the tournament, albiet limited due to not knowing who they're playing.  But yeah, overall, it's real dumb and only bad for the players.

Delaney has put us in the company of such March heavyweights as the Atlantic Sun, Big South, MAAC, Ohio Valley, and Southern conferences who all have their tourneys this weekend.

On the plus side, Wichita State (Missouri Valley) and Gonzaga (West Coast) have done decent in recent years, and their conferences also play this weekend.
