OT: Nebraska sells out spring game already

Submitted by UMxWolverines on
Very impressive for a team that has a longer conference title drought than us. And before the usual arrogant "well what else is there to do in Nebraska?" or butthurt "Something something Frost's mom something something outhit" that gets posted on every Scott Frost thread, considering Nebraska has 1/8 our state population, we should be able to do better than we do for our spring games. Good for them. Nebraska's fanbase is certainly a bright spot for major college football program fanbases. http://www.espn.com/blog/ncfnation/post/_/id/140500/how-scott-frost-mad…

I live in Nebraska and I can say this fan base is the most rabbid/delusional fan base in college sports. If Scott Frost is half the coach they are talking him up to be its going to be a long decade for me here having to listen to it.

Why is it a sure thing that Frost will succeed?

Nebraska has lost 4 or more games every year since 2004. That’s despite playing only 4 games against OSU. Not one of those teams was remotely championship-caliber, like 2016 U-M. It’s easy to say Riley wasn’t any good, but when four coaches in a row can’t win (Riley, Pelini, Callahan, Solich), maybe it’s just not so easy to pull off.

Nebraska has much further to go than Michigan, they’re in a worse recruiting environment and they don’t even have an easier schedule than U-M despite being in the West. Nebraska plays OSU annually the next four years.

Midwestern school hires young high profile former star quarterback with lots of personality as head coach hoping for a return to the glory days of the 90’s and fan base goes crazy with unrealistic expectations. Where have we seen this before?

I get the feeling that if we sold out a spring game and a thread was posted about how cool that was, OP would rush in to say how meaningless it was and that we should focus on winning games, not the spring game attendance contest.

Not a chance. I love the spring game, I've gone to the last two. The fact that we do the absolute bare minimum for it irritates me. It could be a Michigan football Saturday in the spring complete with tailgating and a big crowd, but they always wait til the last minute to announce when it will be and don't do anything special for it, except schedule the annual loss to OSU in lacrosse beforehand sometimes.

Might be nice if they would just go ahead and announce our spring game is at  3 pm on April14th. lots of other schools have already announced days and times and were far far behind.

We all pretty much know its April 14th at 3 pm, so lets get with it . I have no idea why we always drag in this area.

Dude there literally is nothing else to do in Nebraska. No other major college teams unless you’re one of the select few who likes Creighton basketball. No professional teams, and the nearest one is three hours away in another state (Kansas City). University of Nebraska is really the only university of note in the entire state.

Granted I’m sure people are excited about a Frost coming back. Especially after what he just accomplished at UCF this past season. But in Nebraska, there is football, Warren Buffett, and nothing else.

Strategic Air Command Museum is fucking awesome. If you have kids, then you should take them there to see it. It's impressive.

B-29 Superfortress, B-36 Bomber, B-52 Stratofortress, SR-71 Blackbird and a Mig-21 all under one roof.

You won't find a complete, intact collection of warplanes anywhere quite like this short of the EAA Fly-In in Oshkosh. Poignant reminder that US military might was all "go big, or go home".

If you have megalophobia, however, then don't go. The place will be a horror show for you.

"How many fans attended my favorite school's spring game" has become a fairly big topic (and point of comparison between schools) over the last several springs.

I have no idea why that matters though.  Is there any documented instance of a recruit picking a school based on spring game attendance?  (yes, regular season attendance does matter)

One brilliant thing Canham used to do (before Michigan started selling out and there was no more room for them) was Band Day.
They invited thousands of band members from schools across the state, filled the field for a halftime show (and pre- and post- as well). It was a great opportunity for HS students to come and see the campus, the game atmosphere, etc. Many would no doubt bring family, friends along with them as well.

Bring it back! Make the Spring Game Band Day, and it would be a fantastic experience for visitors and fans, too.

Given that Nebraska sold more than 78,000 tickets to the spring game last year to watch a Mike Riley coached team, it's not all that surprising that it sold out this year. It seems not to take much to get the Cornhusker faithful excited.

If we had a state as boring as Nebraska and a stadium that size, we would have sold out 2015.

How about you try selling out the largest stadium in the country for a spring game, Nebraska? Bet that would go well.

For this reason, we shouldn't care, especially because I doubt Spring Game attendance has a big influence on landing recruits.

However, I agree that we need to role out the details on when the Spring Game is MUCH sooner. And I also completely agree that we should bring back Canham's Band Day for the Spring Game! I might go to the game just because of that.

They have a 90,000 seating capacity, putting them behind only the largest and two of the other 7 largest stadiums in the country in Psu and Osu. 90K is a damn good get for a spring game so i wouldn't belittle it. We've never come close to putting 90K in the stadium for a spring game so don't make us sound like "we're the coolest fucking kids in school."

for almost anything, including exagerrating that which supposdely makes the arrogant better.

However, NE really does have little to offer more than their cfb. However, I think this is what makes the population great, not substandard. They follow their Red clad team about as fervently and loyal as any team in the country. Also, meeting them at a neutral spot - met a handful while visiting my son who lives near the UCLA campus - I found them to be both knowledgeable and nice. We were actually watching the UM vs. NE game in 2011, so they could have been pretty nasty.

I think Frost would be the outlier here. He definitely seems to have a chip on his shoulder, evidenced by the "outhitting" statement. I do think it's quite an achievement and I guess it would not be bad were we to have about 80K attend our spring affair. I just think it's a lot of ado about not that much.I'm actually happy they're excited again. Like I said, i think they're a pretty nice bunch.
