I thought by the Wisconsin game he showed overall improvement enough that I was really excited about what he could be next year. We had a real shot to upset Wisconsin if Peters never went out. Then with a whole month to practice as the dude for the bowl game he crapped the bed. With 3 different QBs struggling mightily this season its clear there are problems beyond any one individual player though.

I think Speight's "regression" was largely caused by horrendous OL play in September.

Speight would have looked great against Rutgers, Minnesota, and Maryland.  Heck Peter's stats from those games aren't anything special.

Had Speight not been injured and played the whole season I think we probably get one or two more wins and he comes back for 2018.

Totally agree with this.

It's hard to make the argument that Peters "improved" given the limited games that he played, the competition level, and the amount that he was asked to do.  He did almost nothing against Wisconsin prior to being injured and showed in that game and against SC very poor red zone decision making.  And against SC, he had some definite accuracy issues.

If Speight could have managed to stay healthy for the entire season, Michigan wins at least 9 regular season games and quite possibly 10.  I obviously don't think he is delaying his transfer decision to see what happens with Shea Patterson, but if I had to decide between Speight or Peters next year, I would take Speight based on what we have seen from both guys.  McCaffrey intrigues me with his family pedigree and the compliments that the coaching staff gave him throughout the year, but he's obviously a complete unknown at this point.

I'm optimistic about our future at QB.  But Peters this year was no revelation.

This is his stat line from what is considered his best game, against Wisconsin he was 9/18 for 157 with 0 TDs and 0 INTs and a long of 48.   To be fair that isn't the complete game, as he was knocked out late in the third period.  But here are the drives that Peters led in the 2nd half.

4 plays 14 yards (PUNT) Peters was 1/1 for 22 yards, had a 2 yard run, and sacked for -10

3 plays -1 yards (PUNT) Peters was 0/2 with a 4 yard run

5 plays 8 yards (FG) Peters was 0/1

3 plays 5 yards (PUNT) Peters 1/2 for 2 yards

I have a hard time being convinced that if Peters finishes the game the result is any different.

O'Korn came in and led the following 3 drives

7 plays 26 yards (PUNT) O'Korn was 0/4

3 plays -1 yards (PUNT) O'Korn was 0/1 with a 1 yard run

4 plays 9 yards (DOWNS) O'Korn was 1/2 for 8 yards and had 2 runs for 1 total yard

So total 2nd half stats for Peters were 2/6 for 24 yards, a 10 yard sack, and 3 runs for 8 yards.  For O'Korn it was 1/7 for 8 yards, and 3 runs for 2 yards.  Maybe if Peters finishes the game we get a field goal on the 7 play 26 yard drive that O'Korn went 0/4 on.

Honestly, just a gut feeling so nothing.

But I think Speight would have done enough to win.  He only played 3 series against Purdue and our defense held them to 10 points.  I think Speight does just enough to get us more than 10 points...

But that is just my opinion.

Didn't Harbaugh say something about wanting to speak with Speight before he transferred (sounded like he was taken unaware by the decision when it was announced)? I wouldn't mind Speight making a fight for the job in the spring, but the article makes it sound like he will be off campus (LA), so I assume he is not enrolled.

that Harbaugh came to him and seemed surprised and asked if there's anything they could do to keep him (other than promising him the job of course).  Speight did say the other coaches weren't surprised.

He's not enrolled so he won't participate in spring ball anywhere.

I hope it comes sooner than later. Good luck Wilton, see you around. Great kid but we need better play at QB to do anything. I’d rather have Milton win 8 games that Wilton win 9. That is if Patterson can’t go.

Agree on Doyle. He has very good throwing mechanics. I think Milton is 1-2 seasons of good coaching behind Doyle in that department.

Also regarding Doyle, I've read that he may be going to prep school for a season instead of UM. I've seen it hinted that the coaches may be steering him in this direction. It sounded like a roster management decision more than anything else. I don't recall if a prep season counts as one year or if the player can join the team with full 4-5 years of eligibility.

(or any) offers. Non-qualifiers in football tend to go Juco. They have to stay two years before they can transfer to FBS/FCS. That's not appealing in basketball where players do leave so early.

Albrecht and Aubrey Dawkins had no offers out of HS. They went to prep school to earn them. McGary boosted his stock a lot too.

One other difference is the level of competition available in prep schools. It's very high in basketball, low in football. Oak Hill Academy was a perrennial basketball power, where bench players got offers. It's very feasible to boost your stock going that route in basketball.

This and there are far fewer NCAA D1 basketball scholarships than football scholarships.

Football:

FBS: 129 teams with 85 scholarships per team = 10,965 total scholarships.

FCS: 124 teams with 63 scholarships per team = 7,812 total scholarships

Basketball:

D1: 351 teams with 13 scholarships per team = 4,563 total scholarships

I haven't seen the video but I am not going to judge him off 1 play in bowl practice, that seems dumb to me. If Don Brown thinks hes the man, I am going to go with that until I see him get serious reps.

Dude is a high school senior who is well known to be a developmental prospect and you have people suggesting he could come in and be as good as a RS Sr Wilton Speight. It's just stupid to even suggest he would have a real competition with Wilton this coming offseason (if both were in Ann Arbor together)

Our supposed savior that would have no doubt led us to a big ten title had he not gotten hurt has a bad bowl game and now those insane peoples' hopes are dashed and now it's time to put all their crazy eggs in the newest and youngest QB recruit's basket. So it's gone since Chad Henne left around here.

in all the other "what's Wilton doing" threads, but here goes. Wilton's in Love and is considering following his heart. I've talked with Robert Wilton Speight III in the tunnel at the QB Camp, on the sidelines at Glick, while transporting him in a golf cart on the athletic campus, in the stands at numerous women's soccer games and even when he was in a cap and gown on the floor of Crisler. The common thread of all these interactions (except the tunnel) over two years is his girlfriend who shall remain nameless in this post. They both graduated in December, both were stars on their respective teams (when healthy), both are good looking ~22 year olds with a UM degree and the world in front of them. Job prospects or grad schools could be limitless for these two with ther resumes. At 22 I would have followed my love interest wherever she ended up in law school ....alas the feeling wasn't mutual and here I am on Mgoblog. If he's in LA his sweety is in LA.

Yeah.  Okay...  He's in LA becuase that's where his QB coach lives.  He's spent every off season in LA working with his QB coach.  Maybe he just wants to be more selective with where he goes?  Maybe he didnt' get the interest he thought he'd get as a grad transfer?  Maybe his girl is dragging him around wherever she wants to go and he's just following like a little puppy?

Who cares?  Why can't we just be happy that Wilton gave what he had to Michigan, and wish him well?  He accounted for himself quite well, here, given the crappy coaching he had his first couple of years...

It's my opinion up above. He may be in LA to work on football and thinking about one more year of football but just maybe he's thinking of the next 40 plus years of his life that have nothing to do with throwing an oblong sphreroid around for your and my enjoyment.  I care how he ultimately suceeds in his life after football and we can talk more around the campfire on the upcoming camping trip. Kumbaya .
