Jalen Hurts

Submitted by Supa Hot Fire on

The sportsmanship displayed by Jalen Hurts in that game today was unbelievable. The way he was benched after being 25-2 as a starter, in the championship he dreamed of getting back to after last years' loss, and still supported his backup and team was amazing. We can all learn from it.

As an aside, Bama next year with this freshman is a scary thought. By far the best quarterback they have ever had.

EDIT: Best QB under Saban and in terms of talent. Most have been game managers

I'm just bummed because I could see the beginning of the end on the horizon for bama. The takes would be so hot on how Saban is losing it had Tua not worked out splendidly. But now they're going to 4-peat or something stupid like that. Tua played great.

I honestly don't think Hurts is that amazing. He has a superstar OL, RBs and WRs. Put him in a place like Nebraska and he'd be an upgrade over Tanner Lee but he still can't throw.

I never liked him before tonight. I always thought he seemed smug and had a quiet, annoying cockiness like Steph Curry. However, he showed a grace that most kids don't show and is the classiest Bama player I've ever seen. Winning is always nice, and Bama won, but he was the star tonight despite getting yanked. Something tells me he's not transferring unless it's a grad transfer. If he sulked on the bench, I'd say yes, but he won't leave with a a knee jerk reaction this offseason.

I'm overly critical. His attitude and demeanor just reminds me of Duke basketball players, and others that have a similar type attitude like Steph Curry. It's a quiet cockiness that rubs me the wrong way, bout you're right, a lot of it is just dislike for the team he plays for. Either way, he was very impressive last night. He handled it better than I would have at his age.

Don't over hype the new QB. Once he has more game film, he can regress. Saban clear have him prepare some plays for this game. His pass are mostly to the freshmen WR who likely practice with him in 2nd team. Judo to Saban and dare to make the decision and call those.

i don't think harbaugh can do that. he becomes more conservative after being in NFL, everything is calculated, but this is collegue football, momentum is more important.

Bama's gameplan wasn't radical, but they were repping Tua with the first team leading up to the game per Chris "Smart Football" Brown and he was taking throws. The 4-verts call that ended the game was basically a "just give it a shot" call that is a day one install (ie everyone knows it) and it worked.

Momentum is totally meaningless, by the way. It's all about plays and tactics and matchups, and Bama did a better job in the second half. Notice how little effect Georgia's bomb TD in the third had on the "momentum" of the game. Even the trade of turnovers mainly wound up just being an issue of field position.

Hogwash. He did what was asked of him all year and all last year. Bama never has elite QBs. Hurts had 1 turnover this year. He ran an efficient and stable offense. It cerainly wasn't elite, but he did what was necessary to win. Bama certainly didn't win in spite of him. That implies that he didn't do what was asked of him, which he did.

is it really that hard for everyone on this thread to realize the OP means this incarnation of Alabama when he talks about Tus being the best QB? The Saban era of Bama QBs. That's why he's not mentioning Namath or Stabler

Hurts is a smart kid with a great future. He played it right and got his second title. Don’t think he wasn’t thinking about where he’ll transfer as he watched with that smile. I just hope somehow he doesn’t end up at Ohio State.

I actually thought the freshman QB looked a lot like O'Korn in his first half game. Held the ball too long and bailed to run frequently. He got the job done amd definitely made a few perfect throw, but he also got bailed by a couple good catches and benefitted from scrambles in which the D was well out of place because the nature of broken plays. A lot of talent on the field to help, but it goes to show that a little luck and sustained confidence can make a difference.

Okorn would have thrown 6 interceptions on 7 throwing attempts against Georgia. The 7th attempt would have been intentional grounding. For never playing in a game and then for the first time in a championship game that was pretty amazing. Hurts will be grad transferring as soon as he can. He is done with that kid there. Fromm from Georgia is unreal too.

I didn't opine on what O'Korn would have done in this game. I was comparing Tua's performance to O'Korn's against Indiana in 2017, in which he threw zero interceptions and also stepped into a game in doubt without meaningful snaps previously, but managed to win the game. O'Korn did not look great in the IU game, and I don't think Bama's QB did either despite the praise he personally is getting. He was making the same mistakes O'Korn did. I'm sure Tua will go on to be great for the next two years, but I'll be interested to see if he develops before they play a strong team that has meaningful film on him. Though, I'm not sure it matters when Bama has much more talent than 95% of college football teams.

A qb going to Bama, compared to almost anyone really will have fatter passing stats merely by dishing off to one of their super slots or tremendous RBs. If you can throw the ball 10 yds, they can pick up what's left. What you saw last night was incredible though. That kid treated that game like he was playing in the backyard. Take a right at the light pole and i'll hit you four yds from the tree line. Fricking incredible.

Do you mean Purdue? Or last year's IU game? This year O'Korn was the starter going into IU.

Granted it was the game, but people were crowning Cardale Jones as the #1 pick after 2 games, and he couldn't even hold down the starting position the following year.

Saban has to be the only coach in the country who would have made that switch at halftime. Unfortunately, I would see harbaugh sticking to "his guy" rather than taking the risk with a true freshman

I dunno AJ McCarron was pretty good. Let's see a full body of work from Tua before jumping on the hype train. Carde Jones looked good in the playoff then disappointed the next year.
