Julian Barnett (2019) commits to MSU

Submitted by Gentleman Squirrels on

Julian Barnett in the 2019 class committed to MSU today. Michigan never offered him, but I thought it was notable considering he's rated #2 in state, #3 CB, and #60 nationally. Also has plenty of length at 6'1 so he would fit what Don Brown wants in a longer corner. This recruitment has always seemed strange to me. I'm sure Harbaugh and co will get the recruits they want, but it's still a shame to see a top ranked in state player go to the other guys.

But we will never know every detail about how or why a kid was or wasn’t recruited. In this case here it seems simple, he chose an MSU offer over a non-offer from UM. Sometimes that happens.

Could someone give me a rundown of Oregon State's class since we're talking about recruting that has no bearing on UM?

MSU is like that average guy who is trying to get a commitment from a hot girl before alpha males can get access.  If this guy stays with MSU he is cutting himself short.  He owes a better life to himself.

Interesting analogy. In my memory of drunken weekends visiting friends in Ann Arbor, typically, we Sparty meatheads were more of the alpha types focused (speaking in broad stokes here) on shotgunning another beer and getting laid, while you guys spent more time dissecting Kant and Kierkegaard until only the fuglies were left in play. Jokes aside: it sometimes surprises me how many of you are *actually* and *literally* incapable of conceptualizing that MSU (or really, any non-UM school) can be compelling to someone for any number of legitimate and non-nefarious reasons. Not. Everyone. Will. Pick. You. It doesn’t mean they’re stupid, or on the take. This is where where that reputation for arrogance comes from. Gentlemen, please. I’m cringing on your behalf.

Who gives a fuck? He can go take some bovine roids the Bulloghs truck in from TC. Or become a bust in the NFL where they actually call PI. To hell with those Spartan clowns. Good riddance.

I haven't followed recruiting very closely the past few years. I just checked the top in-state kids for 2019 on 247 composite. Two thoughts:

  1. Wow, there are a lot of highly ranked Michigan kids in 2019! Nine four-stars!
  2. WTF? We are the favorite for precisely one of them (Marvin Grant).

What gives? There's finally an elite class of in-state kids, and we're getting practically shut out? Does not compute. Can anyone explain?

P.S. - Three of these kids who apparently have no interest in U-M are from "Belleville" (never heard of it), which is 18 miles from Ann Arbor. Double WTF!

I'll hate myself for jumping into this, but here we go. Responding to some earlier comments in the thread.

What DB from MSU was a bust in the NFL? Here's some standard stats from NFL.com (don't know where to look for advanced stats):

- Dennard leads Cincy in tackles this year, has 2 sacks, and an INTs.

- Waynes is 2nd on Vikings in tackles, has 2 INTs.

- Nicholson, who I thought made a mistake in leaving early, had 24 tackles, 1 INT in 8 games before getting injured.

MSUs CBs were significantly improved this season vs the year before, and seeing a guy like Josiah Scott getting freshman all-american honors is probably pretty appealing to this kid.

Now as for grades being an issue. Let me say two things:

1) All B1G schools outside of Northwestern have the game GPA/ACT requirements.

2) maybe MSU is willing to offer/accept a committment from someone who is not yet meeting those, whereas Michigan is a little more cautious. Michigan took a couple kids a year ago (Hawkins, Johnson) who didn't qualify, so if that's the case either they're more cautious now or it's not an issue.

-------------

There's a lot of reasons for a kid to choose MSU. Including, but not limited to, not getting offered by Michigan.

w/r/t your point on grades: You are almost correct. Schools must meet minimum standards across the NCAA. However, each University has a different set of standards for accepting student athletes. I'm not trying to be an arrogant shade of yellow, but the University of Michigan's academic clearinghouse is less likely (definitely during Bo, Mo, Lloyd and post RR) to take flyers on kids who didn't complete certain pre-requisites in HS. That might be an oversimplification, but it's what I've heard through years. However, I don't think it's fair to assume that's what happened here.

Kid is darned near a 5 star. The odds of us not offering a 5 star recruit from a school 15 miles from Michigan Stadium were nil. I don't know why so many fans here started with stuff like this when it was always a near certainty we would offer him. Kid had elite size, speed, and athleticism at cornerback. Every program needs that.

Why is this msu stuff here?? Who cares about their recruits. Its not like we were fighting it out. Michigan never offered. Last time i checked Belleville high school doesnt really play in a tough division anyways.

I went and watched Belleville vs Salem in the playoffs this year. I went to Salem and wanted to see the highly touted Devontae Dobbs play. To my amateur eye that kid is massively overrated. There is no way that kid is close to the number 1 tackle in the country.
