Patterson - the possible nightmare scenario
December 3rd, 2017 at 9:58 AM ^
I doubt Patterson transfers at all if the NCAA holds that he has to sit. He wants to play next year and then enter the draft. He's not going anywhere where he has to sit.

We absolutely need a second viable option at QB outside of a RS freshman, given how Big Ten refs allow roughing Michigan QBs.

a) the Michigan fanbase literally has PTSD
b) on a more serious note, i've always wondered given the supreme importance of the position, that coaches must (and if not, why not?) try and get as man QBs to their school as physically possible.
From a sheer probability standpoint, and we certainly live in the age of big-data invading sports, I can't figure why you wouldn't.

to rising seniors. Patterson would have to sit out a year unless he sues the NCAA.
December 3rd, 2017 at 12:40 PM ^
* usually only applies to seniors.
in this case as in others where schools recieve bowl/post season bans it depends on the length of the ban. if the ban would eliminate the player from ever seeing the post season then the NCAA usually allows the player to be eligible immediately. So for the two year ban of ole miss that could mean that shea could get a waiver and be eligible from day 1. this is where the back and forth then comes in casue adding him would make for a scenario where you now have a redshirt sophomore and true junior as your top two guys

The 2 years of the bowl ban are for the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Since Patterson will be a junior next year he could stay at Ole Miss and play in a bowl game after the 2019 season. He isn't covered by the current ruling from the NCAA.
I have no idea why anyone thinks the NCAA would make an exception for him.

If the NCAA wanted to stick it to Ole Miss they wouldn't have given them a slap on the wrist.

Speight didn't "get a handshake." He concluded that a transfer offers him the best chance of playing time next year to impress the pros and chose to leave. You can be sure that Harbaugh wishes he would return since, at a minimum, he would provide valuable insurance in case of injury. With just BP, DM, two true freshmen and walkons our lack of depth is scary.

The bowl game would be a chance for Peters to display his talents to all viewers, including other schools. Why on earth would he transfer before the bowl game?

Is that Harbaugh has an inherent issue with Peters quiet demeanor compared to himself as a QB and other Michigan QB's who were more vocal in the past. Shea brings some of that flair to the table while being a good QB. I don't think Peters has scratched the surface but in this scenario, if his "widdle feelings" are going to get hurt after averaging 97 yards passing per game while primarily handing off, he can leave (again in this hypothetical.) Good healthy QB competition is important for every school, you never want your starter feeling permanently entrenched, you want "the guy" knowing them performing at a high level means they will start each week, if Shea wants to come here and push Peters and McCaffrey for the QB job, let him do it, and may the best player start.

Put down the pipe!
Peters in the current #1 and has already taken a redshirt year. Leaving UM and taking another year off from game competition would be the dumbest thing ever.
