OSU Wins Due To Refs Agains

Submitted by Cali Citrus Man on

When is the rest of the Big 10 going to stand up to this?  What has Warde Manuel done to stop it from happening to Michigan again?

Wisconsin got totally screwed by the refs.  It was the most blatant defensive holding this year.

run blocking.  It seems like all the OL fall forward and they have a 3-5 yard gain, especiallly on 1st down.  And they can pass protect, especially late in the game when it seems like the defense is gassed.

"lights out" Hornibrook came to play against Michigan.  "bad throwing motion" Hornibrook showed up for most of last night....but...he was constantly under pressure with a blitzer in his face.

I thought Wisc had a chance when they marched down running and passing and then were intercepted at the ~4yd line.  But those ~80 yard pass & run plays with OSU backed deep into its own end, I counted 3 of them are what stole the game away mostly.  Wisc still had a chance despite all of that.

I'm not sure about the 1 loss Bama and 2 loss OSU but it does show me OSU isn't that special against their last two teams.  Both of those could have been losses with a game winning drive...

You can solve that problem by winning your games. A 13-0 big ten champ michigan never misses a 4 team playoff. Heck a 12-1 big ten champ michigan is all but assured a berth in a 4 team playoff unless bama, ou, usc, and clemson are all conference champs and 12-1 or better.

Count me as being among those favoring the 4 team format. I love the chaos, there are always good debates that can be had. But thats what makes it fun. Also, Im kind of against the 8 team playoff because I think the CFP should be about finding the best team, rather than introducing more randomness. Id say neither OSU nor Bama looks like the best team this year, so in reality neither of them is getting screwed by being left out

It depends on what you think the purpose of the CFP should be. Obviously there are different views. But to me, I'm not really looking for March madness-style playoffs. Instead I think it's about matching up the two top teams to determine the champion. I just don't see why we need more than four spots to do that. A good debate can be had whether OSU or bama should get the fourth slot, but I think neither really deserves a shot at being champs so it's hard to be sad for whoever gets left out

"Instead I think it's about matching up the two top teams to determine the champion" Why do we need four teams then? What was wrong with two? "neither really deserves a shot at being champs" So which is it? The most deserving, or best? Because it is not always the same thing.

But we legit have an unofficial 8 team playoff.  The SEC championship was quarterfinal.  The ACC was one too.  The big ten had two teams playing for a spot with OSU a lesser chance if they won.  And the big 12 championship was the same way, if TCU had won they probably weren't getting in.

The comittee has shown that they don't like 2 loss conference champions.  OSU got in last year at 11-1 over a PSU who was 11-2 and the big ten champ with a head to head win over OSU.  This year an 11-1 Alabama got in over OSU who was 11-2 and a conference champ.

The comittee has spoken, if you want to make the playoff don't lose 2 games.  I'm good with this.

Should never be a popularity contest like it still is now. It should be like every other sport in that it gets decided on the field.

5 Power 5 conference champs

1 Highest ranked Group of Five

2 At-large

If it has to stay at 4, thene fuck it, there should be 4 superconferences.

I like 6 as well. The 5 power 5 winners and an undefeated group of 5 or if one doesnt exist 1 at large. Play the first 2 rounds at the schools and only have the championship game at a neutral location. Fans can't go to both semifinals and finals at neutral locations last second anyway and it's a problem with the current system.

6 or 8, I also like the idea of playing quarter finals on campus of the higher seed, say the 3rd Friday or Saturday in December. Semi-finals the weekend after New Years (bowl sites)...the final in mid-January.

Don't have to be like the NFL and schedule games one week apart. Two weeks apart lets player and fans plan, players physically recover and catch up a little on school work, etc.

Deserving is a funny word- It's about deserving to be included in the tournament. The number of teams is ARBITRARY. If it was really about determining the best team and who is worthy, this year it would only be three: Clemson, Georgia, and Oklahoma- including no 4th team. Another year it might be only two...or one. Another year five.

The moment they decided to have a championship game with a pre-determined fixed number of teams eligible (be it 2, 4, 6, 8 or whatever) is the moment that it stopped being about deserving the crown, and figuring a way to chose who is really best, and choosing who is eligible to be in that tourney instead.

you favor an 8 team NCAA basketball tournament too?  It's a tournament - play the games and accept the results.  This is NEVER about who the "best" is ... "Best" is totally subjective.  The CFP is starting to look like gymnastics judging.  Conference champions are in regardless of record ... it's called achievement.  Something this new PC era will never accept !!!

Regular season college basketball games don’t matter. They are two different sports, having two different systems works differently. You know what would have been really fun? If we had an 8 team playoff this year and bama auburn and Georgia already all knew they were in heading into today’s game. Or the Michigan game last year, where the loser of Michigan Ohio State was still almost certainly guaranteed to get in. I’d love for major rivalry games to just not matter. If you want to guarantee p5 conference winners and just ignore schedule imbalances make it 6 with a top group of 5 team. It should never be 8

God I hope it ends up going to 8 teams.  Its just more logical.  Conference champion from each of the power 5 are automatic bids.  Then 3 at large from any conference.  Ends any debate about any one conference having 2 teams that should get in and allows for your once and awhile random team that has a good argument for gettting in such as the 2006 Boise State team.

Nah, this is good. A move to 8 teams starts to depreciate the regular season too much. That Bama-Auburn game? Irrelevant. The B1G championship game? Also irrelevant. Bama and Wisconsin are locks to be at large bids. Instead, we're talking about the resumes of teams like Auburn with 3 losses and Washington and sighing in relief that ND was eliminated when it lost its third game at Stanford.

I will, however, grant that there's an attraction to a conference auto-bid, as it makes the conference games electrically important and the non-conference games irrelevant enough that teams can schedule heavy hitters without jeopardizing their playoff bids. And three at large bids can't happen--besides cheapening the season by letting too many teams in, it shields out G5 teams that could sue for inclusion. A guaranteed bid for a group of 5 team would be an acceptable compromise that gives the little guys a chance to compete and also limits those at-large bids to just teams like Alabama that everyone knows is one of the best teams in the country.

So I'm good with things the way they are. But give an autobid to the best Group of 5 team and I'll listen.

Yes, auto-bids to the Power 5, one bid to the top-ranked G5 team (does it have to win their G5 conference?). Then you've got two more at-large bids left...unless of course somehow the American or another conference in some unforeseen way raises its stature enough to warrant an auto-bid (say ND or Oklahoma or Texas joining ?).

"...attraction to a conference auto-bid, as it makes the conference games electrically important and the non-conference games irrelevant enough that teams can schedule heavy hitters without jeopardizing their playoff bids."

It would actually be an interesting call. There would still be one of the at-large bids available if you don't win your conference, so if you stumble once in conference play is it better to be like Alabama- 11-1 with a stumble in conference play that knocks you out of your conference championship; or say 10-2 with an extra loss but to a much tougher non-conference opponent? It would be a gamble either way.

Remarkable stuff, and a closer call than it looks on the video (though they do lift the bridge early to allow time for this, and trust me on that I've been stuck waiting for it when it does). Unfortunately I was working at the time and couldn't watch in person.

My biggest regret is not getting a chance to see the Tregurtha when it ran aground in the harbor next to Bayfront Park and got stuck for a short time when it biffed the turn into the channel to leave. Oh well. Getting to see it through the channel is awesome.

A few of us were discussing this latest incident and someone mentioned that one from a few years ago, as well.  It sounded like quite the spectacle, but an understandable occupational hazard with a vessel that length.  It's nice to see the operators redeem themselves a bit this time.  I only recently learned of your bridge a few weeks ago after my brother returned from his maiden voyage to Duluth.  He said he had a very enjoyable time, and that, amongst other things, he went inside a Christmas tree that was very tall and contained thousands of colorful lights.  Duluth sounds like a really neat place.

It's a great place. I love it.

Your brother was referring to Bentleyville, a free walkthrough Christmas Light display on the shore of the harbor. In addition to a nice collection of lights and the tree you mentioned (which is cool, though the general public isn't allowed inside) they offer hot cocoa, cookies, popcorn, and marshmallows (which you can roast in their portable fire pits) all for free.

I hopped over there with my kids for a few minutes after taking in a UMD hockey game this evening. Good use of a spare half hour.

Fuck the B1G. This shit is a circus sideshow year in and year out. OSU + big game + 4th quarter = blatant disregard for the rules of football. It's insane. It's in everyone's face. Somebody, somewhere, do something about it.
