MBB: Tidbits! We have tidbits!

Submitted by Erik_in_Dayton on

I don't want to take away clicks from UMHoops - please read the article for yourself - but here are some highlights:

*Coach Beilein is happy about the defense.

*Charles Matthews has been rebounding well.

*Coach Haynes is high on Jaaron Simmons (who is from Dayton, which means he is a good hearted person who can build a rudimentary airplane if needed).

You can access the full series of radio interviews that the UMHoops article is based on via the link.

Can you imagine a post like this hitting the board around this time a year ago? The FIRE BEILEIN brigade would've been out in full force and half of the comments would've been about how much he sucks, our players suck, the program is dead, etc. I'm glad those times have passed.

Any moron who doubts John Beilein should be banned from this site. I was one of those morons who doubted him after the OSU loss and Beilein made me look silly. The guy is the greatest BBall coach ever at Michigan period. 7 NCAA tourneys in 9 years with the missed year in 2014-2015 due to half the team being injured. If u wanna criticize him your free to but calling for his job is ridiculous at this point unless he has a red berenson end in his career. He has earned the ability to coach until his retirement. HAIL BEILEIN GO BLUE!!

Orr won 2 big ten titles and 1 final four beilein has the same but also has a big ten tourney championship in the same amount of time

I said at Michigan. He is the greatest ever. Only national champion is Fischer even tho it was frieders team. Even so Fischer went to 3 final fours and an nit championship even tho it doesn’t count. Compare that to Beileins 1 final four 2 big ten regular season championships and a big ten tournament championship I’d still give the nod to beilein

You Tube some Michigan games for that time period.  There was almost no coaching going on.  That team was player-coached and it showed.  The "offense" they ran was non-sensical, they almost never made entry passes to Howard despite his machine like efficiency in the post.  Webber drifted all over the court for long stretches of time and was completely unimpactful for long portions of games.  Basically everybody's favorite shot was the patented long two-pointer.  NOBODY boxed out.  Those teams had a staggering amount of talent, but Fisher didn't do a whole lot.

In 5 years. And our last championship with players that were getting blown out on their own court before he took over.  Come on man.

you think a coach can take over a team 2 days before the NCAA tournament and really have any "structural" impact on the way a team plays I have some ocean front property in Nebraska I would like to sell you.

He was probably a good motivator, and players unquestionably liked playing for him.  But the 1993 Michigan team not winning the national championship is the biggest indictment of all time for a head coach.  That team should have been blowing everybody out.  They did not win the conference, barely got a number one seed in the tourney, and needed comebacks against UCLA, Temple and f-ing George Washington to get to the Final Four.

Losing to that Carolina team was a joke, also.  Montross was the only marginal pro on that team.  Jalen had zero defensive discipline in college and was slow footed on the perimeter, and we put him on Donald Williams?  Like, the-only-possible-way-Carolina-stays-in-the-game-Donald-Williams?  All game?  smh

Needed comebacks.

Losing in the championship was a joke.

If the 89 wolverines were so good how did they lose to Illini at home by 25 points just before the tourney. Coaching had nothing to do with a national championship really? You got an axe to grind fine but 3 championship games and one NC in a five year span is amazing. He saved the 89 team and was the coach that led 5 freshman to a championship game.

Are you telling me only 3 championships in 5 years wouldve been enough to make him a mediocre coach in your eyes?

Wow.

did not win anything with a team of his own. 89 was a good coaching job as an interim coach. He never won anything after that despite coaching superior talent for most of his time here. Not even a conference title. ( including 94 when he pissed away a 10 point lead at home against Purdue in like two minutes without using a timeout With the conference title on the line).

That's crazy. How much money does he make? That is one aspect I almost never pay attention to in sports because it's. ever my money lining somebody else's pockets. 7 tourneys in 9 years with a Cham....we know his resume. I can't believe people are EXPECTING more out of him. Look at the miracle he pulled off with last years team..

This will be a very interesting team to watch this year.

1) Simpson got a lot of valuable PT spotting Walton last year. Can he now step up and be the next great Beilein PG? He doesn't have to be Burke this year. Just run the offense and make smart decisions.

2) What do we have with Charles Matthews? If nothing else, a big boost in overall athleticism on the team. Hoping he can be the big finisher around the rim we haven't had since GRIII.

3) Does Wagner pick up where he left off? If he can play this year on a consistent basis like he played last year against Purdue, Wisconsin and Louisville, he's a lottery pick.

4) How does the defense look? If it can be serviceable or even decent, this team can challenge for a conference title. Probably not be a favorite, but definitely challenge for it.

5) Hoping some of the big men behind Wagner can step in and look good. Presuming Wagner leaves after this year, and he probably will, there's a whole lot of unproven behind him.

Should be fun to watch! Beilein will find a way to get the most out of every guy he has.

Simmons should b the starter so Simpson will have another year to build on. But if he and Ibi can contribute 10 points per game from the bench that would b huge. The starters should be Simmons Mathews Robinson Abdurahkman Wagner. We got a lot of depth this year but I wanna see contributors from the bench because they are all unknowns at this point

Ahh got it. I don't pay enough attention clearly but just assumed Simpson would be the starter. Even if he doesn't start he's going to get a lot of PT this year.

Guess that's a good thing if Simmons will be the starter this year. From what I recall, Simpson looked pretty good in his limited time last year, and presumably he's built on that during the offseason. So that must mean that Simmons will be pretty good as well.

The big ten doesn’t look too good this year I think Maryland Wisconsin and Indiana take a step back while nw Minnesota MSU might be the top 3 believe it or not. We have a great shot at finishing 4th which would great considering everything we lost this year.

The bottom half of the B1G is probably going to be absolute garbage.  I think you would be hard pressed to find 4 worse teams than Rutgers, Illinois, Nebraska and Ohio State.  On the flip side though I think Michigan State will be top 5 all year and Michigan, Northwestern, Penn State, Minnesota and Purdue will all be tournament bound, with Michigan Northwestern and Minnesota being 2nd weekend capable.

I believe John’s exact quote on defense was: “our defense can’t be worse than last year, especially at the beginning of the year.” That quote hardly fills me with confidence.

Disappointing (but understandable) news that Fred Wright-Jones has left the program to focus on academics.

This season's Bench Mob took a hit.

Will be an interesting season but I don’t see how this team doesn’t take at least a few steps back. Walton played out of his mind the last month and a half of the season. As inconsistent as Irvin was he was a senior who still hit some big shots. I think this is a bubble team but hope to be pleasantly surprised. It is going to be tough to replace the void left by Walton graduating.

Been around for 4 different coaches in football. I'd venture to say him, Sean Miller, Dana Altman, and Mark Few are the four coaches most likely to get to the Hall of Fame next. Really Beilein becomes a lock for it if gets an NC (not every who wins it all makes it too ie Kevin Ollie)
