Meant Columbia, SC not Spartanburg SC

01/02/2019 - 2:05pm Every year I buy and usually…

Every year I buy and usually sell most of my NCAA Tournament tickets in an effort to get good seats to see Michigan or make money on what I think might be a desirable location. The key is to know which locations are desirable and which locations are not and that changes from year to year. What makes a location desirable is how many "good" teams could be placed at that location. It is more complicated than you think. For instance, 1st/2nd round sites always do better than regional sites in terms of making money. 8 teams are at a 1st/2nd round site, whereas only 4 at a regional site.  Resulting in as many as 6 or 7 teams within 500 miles of the 1st/2nd round site, whereas typically only 1-2 teams are within 500 miles of the regional site.  The only regional site that I have ever made money on was Indianapolis in 2014 and that was pure luck as Michigan, Kentucky, Louisville and Tennessee were the 4 teams and all within 400 miles of the location. I have since stopped buying regional sites.  As for this year, I bought Columbus (because I think Michigan will be there) and I bought Spartanburg, SC because I think Duke and North Carolina will both be placed there.  IME, only about 5 teams really move the needle and they are Louisville, Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, Indiana.  Other teams that draw well locally are Michigan, Michigan State, Florida, Tennessee (think state schools with large fan bases that are placed in close proximity in a large city).

All that said, it comes down to who do you think will be placed in Jacksonville.  And what you have to do is project from the top down, because that is how the committe will do it.  They will take the tournament on the whole, seed it 1-68 and then work from the top down to place teams in a "geographically fit" location.  The key is 500 miles.  The NCAA has to pay for travel if a team is placed more than 500 miles from their respective campus.

My take is that Columbus and Spartanburg will be money makers.  Salt Lake City and San Jose and will be money losers.  Des Moines, Tulsa, Hartford and Jacksonsville will be toss ups.  Wherever Kansas lands will determine the Des Moines/Tulsa coin flip.  The thing about Jacksonville is that if Virginia stays on the 1 line, they will either be in Columbus or Spartanburg and could potentially bump North Carolina down to Jacksonville AND if North Carolina is a 3 seed and Kentucky is a 6 seed, look out, prices will sky rocket.

Most overrated is definitely Ohio State. They won't make the tourney.

Think you nailed it. Would be shocked to see Gentry or Patterson go.  Mildly surprised to see Bredenson go.  Not surprised if Hill or Long go.  Shocked if Bush or Gary come back.

11/19/2018 - 9:53am I have seen a lot of…

I have seen a lot of misinformation out there.  So let's clear up a couple things.  StubHub is THE LAST PLACE you want to buy these tickets.  They charge the buyer somewhere between 20%-27% markup on the tickets.  Ticketmaster is the OFFICIAL re-seller of Ohio State Tickets.  Try ticketmaster, the convenience fee is more in the 15%-18% range.  Ebay would be my second option.  Again, beware of seller history.  Third option would be Vivid Seats.  Keep in mind that StubHub does NOT have guaranteed tickets for Ohio State like they do for Michigan.  If your ticket is fake and denied entry at the gate, you will have to call StubHub and they will have to provide you with replacement tickets.  Use Ticketmaster for this game.

Isn't McCaffery eligible for a medical redshirt this season?  Or does the injury have to happen in the first 4 games?

For every TFL, he had a play where he blew his assignment and gave up 10+ yards.  Not to mention the mind-numbing penalties, specifically the game in 06.  He was truly a jekyll and hyde player.

Little known fact.  Our fearless leader is 0-6 with his predictions against the spread over the last 6 games and 2-10 over his last 12, so SMU +35.5?

I am all for Beilein going to the pros if that is what he wants, but don't go to the Pistons, where a good coach will be fired in 3 years.

Regardless, happy he is back.  Go win it all next year!!!!!!!!

The old quadruple post... maybe I should play the lottery

05/04/2018 - 1:18pm Better, but still flawed

Long overdue.  Some schools have been using this system for 10+ years.  It is still flawed.

They separate everyone by 5 minute increments.  Therefore, unless you have a whole day to devote to constantly hitting F5, you are only going to see a snapshot of what was really available in your "relative" time frame.  People who have more points but not as good of seats get screwed in this situation because you essentially get locked in to picking from the best availble at your time slot, when there could be better seats that open up a couple minutes/hours after your time slot when someone else moves.

04/30/2018 - 9:19am A few suggestions

I like the NC years on the press box and the retired numbers.

I like painting the endzones blue, with lettering in Maize.

I can't believe I made it 112 comments and there were no suggestions of marshmallows.  At least bring it back for MSU/Ohio State.

I am also with the crowd that is done with bleacher seating.  I am paying thousands of dollars in Preferred Seat Donations to sit on a cold, hard bleacher.  Don't have to do every section, but at least sections 44, 1, 2 and 22, 23, 24.

04/26/2018 - 3:15pm sorta

one regular season title and 2 conference tournament titles.  Still the main point of his argument is the recruits that stay 4 years go to the Final Four.  Fails to mention that not one player on next year's team will have played in a sweet 16 game, let alone a Final Four.

04/26/2018 - 11:59am I was at that game

He hit corner three after corner three.  Michigan football beat Wisconsin earlier in the day.  Nobody really cared about the basketball game.

04/24/2018 - 5:02pm Sample size

How many teams have done that?

How much talent did they have surrounding those 3 players?

MSU has McQuaid, Ahrens and Tillman plus the incoming class.

Not exactly a strong supporting group.

04/24/2018 - 2:01pm Mathews

Huge risk but a potential huge payout for Mathews.  He is getting older, and if next season does not go according to plan, it could be very harmful to his draft prospects.  However, if he develops under a traditional Beilein 2nd year player he could be a B1G POY candidate and possible lottery pick.

04/10/2018 - 1:21pm Michigan 30-1 to win it all

Feel like I should get in on that now. It's LOW even if Wagner declares. It's a steal if he returns.

04/09/2018 - 5:37pm One caveat

His defense better improve. Beilein showed this year with everyone, if you don't play D, have a seat and watch. Dejulius is going to be a better defender than Poole from the day he shows up. Not saying it's likely, but I could see a backcourt of Simpson/Dejulius logging some minutes if Poole can't stay in front of anyone.

04/02/2018 - 1:39pm I upgraded my seats

So now I have 2 in section 115, row QQ. Email me if interested mporter2183 @ gmail. I will be down on the river walk in 30 min. Go Blue!!!

03/29/2018 - 3:31pm slap the floor

Just wanted to make sure he could slap the floor.  That is Michigan State's calling card after all.

03/29/2018 - 10:24am Bump

This should be bumped to the front page tomorrow.

03/29/2018 - 10:23am Bar on Saturday?

Have we determined a "Michigan" Bar for Saturday?

03/27/2018 - 1:31pm all true

but Beilein had the wherewithall to fire his assistants after that 3rd season.  Just saying.

03/26/2018 - 7:22pm MTurner

MTurner took the tickets.  Sorry guys, but I wanted to make sure some Michigan fans got the tickets.  I figured best way was first response.  Go Blue!

03/26/2018 - 6:42pm it's all sessions

sorry.  little frustrated right now with the couple that backed out.  I have season tickets for both basketball and football, as do my parents.  These are the same tickets you would get through the university, both days. $385 all in.  I am going to San Antonio as well and can meet you down there to exchange the tickets.

03/25/2018 - 1:41am I am in

Flying from Detroit on Friday into Dallas and renting a car to make the drive. Flights were ridiculous into San Antonio and Austin.

03/22/2018 - 6:42pm Request

$100 to anyone that scoops up a program and game ticket for me. Wish I could be there! Go Blue!!!

03/20/2018 - 12:17pm longest streak since...

2013 when Beilein's team won 16 in a row to start the season.

03/19/2018 - 6:02pm Proposition

Confession:  I collect basketball tickets.  No, I am not the guy standing by the exit at Crisler.  I have been to every tournament game since Beilein started at Michigan.  I won't be there this weekend.  I have 2 tickets and a program from Wichita or any other NCAA Tournament game including the 2013 Final Four that I would trade someone for the 2 ticket stubs from the games in LA.  They have to be the "NCAA" issued tickets not the box office tickets.  You go to the game and then mail me a ticket from each day afterwards and I will send you whatever you might be interested in from my collection.  If interested just reply and we will figure out how to work it out.  Wishing I could be there! Go Blue!!!

03/17/2018 - 4:06pm Checking in

My wife and I are here in Wichita.  Section 115.  Curious if anyone knows of a Michigan Bar as well.

03/12/2018 - 9:01am more in depth

I watched their conference championship game last night.  The remind me of Illinois.  They like to pressure the ball handler, blitz any ball screen and run a lot of motion/weave sets on offense, predicated on dribble penetration.

Their PG (Rorie #14) is a player to watch.  He can shoot off the bounce and has a good first step and a few different moves.

Their C (Akoh) is a poor man's Reggie Lynch.  Undersized, and lacks foot speed and doesn't have the help side instincts of Lynch.  This is a matchup Michigan must attack.

Outside of the PG, who has a decent but not great handle, they are ripe for hands in the passing lanes and deflections.  All of the other 4 starters have TO rates near 20% and it showed in that game.

They have a middling tempo rate, and after looking at Kenpom, there must be some teams that really like to slow the pace down, because the conference tourney semis were a track meet, but Eastern Washington seemed to like to slow the game down.  I will be curious as to how this team grades out in half court sets in terms of PPP (I don't expect it to be great).

Their Kenpom numbers hint that they are great at taking away 3 point attempts, but I saw more indifference in taking 3's on Eastern Washington's part.  They give up a ton of dribble penetration and seem to over rotate on the help which leaves weakside shooters open all night.  They like to take away your first option, which means Zavier is going to have to do a lot of reading and reacting.

In summary, their defense is predicated on creating turnovers and getting out in transition.  They force turnovers on 20% of opponent possessions and give up assists on only 43.5% of opponent made FG's. They rebound very well for their size.  They don't attempt a lot of 3's and If Michigan keeps the TO's down and cleans up the defensive glass, it should go our way.

03/03/2018 - 7:59pm He won't show up

Always has a "planned day off" after crushing defeats.

02/23/2018 - 11:48pm Was at the game

Was absolutely amazing

02/23/2018 - 11:44pm One of my favorite memories as a kid

Beating #1 duke after trailing by 18 and then racing home to watch Woodson win the heisman.

02/23/2018 - 2:26pm yes and no

The key number is 500 miles.  Don't remember the exact rule and reasoning, but at 500 miles the NCAA has to reimburse the school's travel expenses, or something of that nature.

Cincinatti is as close to Pittsburgh as they are to Detroit.  The difference is 10 miles. Meaning, Xavier and Cincinnati will both likely end up in Pittsburgh.

Duke and Virginia will be in Charlotte.

Purdue will likely be in Nashville, as Nashville is nearly the same distance for them as Detroit.

Ohio State could be in either Pittsburgh or Detroit.  I don't think Michigan is far behind Ohio State on the S curve.  Very similar profiles, split the head to head.  The team that makes the furthest in the BTT likely has the upper hand. If it's Ohio State, they likely get sent to Pittsburgh and Xavier or Cinci get sent to Detroit.  Otherwise, I could see Michigan ending up in Detroit.  They were a 4 seed in 2013 and ended up in Detroit.

IMO, there is a decent chance that Michigan ends up in Pittsburgh as a 6 seed playing either Cincinnati or Xavier.

02/23/2018 - 1:05pm not really

in 2014, we lost to Charlotte.

in 2013, we lost to Penn State.

The bad losses really only matter for the bubble teams.  If we win out, we will be a sweet 16 seed.  I don't think we will win out, so it's probably a moot point.

02/23/2018 - 1:03pm nothing happens

at least not right away... I do agree with others though, in that Izzo will find an all to convenient excuse to retire after this season.  I don't know if that is a good thing.

02/22/2018 - 3:02pm all of you are wrong

This team is going to win out, BTT included and be a 3 seed in Detroit on the first weekend.
