But the OL is worse than we had thought. Sp8 did not play well and is injured. O'Korn is not a great QB but could improve through the season. Our defense flirts with greatness. Overall, I think we could still pull an upset over one of the B1G contenders, PSU, WI or OSU. There's a small chance if this offense improves we could win the B1G. I place that probability at 20 percent. Even if we lose 4 to 5 games this season, we should have a bounce back year next season may be 9-3 or 10-2. 2019 and years after the team will be more experience with plenty of depth. Harbaugh definitely will turn this program into a bonafide top 10 team in a few years. I can wait, I just hope Harbuagh does not get frustrated and leaves for the NFL.

His Dudeness

With this team every game is going to be close. The defense is too good to let a game get away. That said the variance for errors is even lower than normal. Our offense should run like the Ravens team that won the championship. Two rules A) Don't fuck up. B) Give the defense a chance to rest. The mindset should be field position. If we get the ball on our own 20 we shouldn't be thinking we are going to go 80 yards and score. We should be thinking don't go 3 and out. I think Harbaugh thought maybe this offense had a chance to be a weapon. It's clear now that it's not. I think you will see a change in mindset going forward. We will use our offense as a time eater. When our defense does something great we will have a short field and then take some shots. It works it just makes every game close. Against good and bad teams. And that means when an oh shit moment happens it will cost us much more than usual. Oh shit moments are going to happen. Time for everyone to recalibrate expectations. This team was always going to be a 9-3 team then we lost our best WR and our starting QB. I mean come on, guys. This isn't the end of the world. Snakebite seasons happen. Don't throw the Harbaugh out with the bathwater.

I still think it's a classic vocal minority and many those know Harbaugh is great for Michigan. It's the petty BS. "Focus on football not sleepovers and Rome". It's about recruiting jackass "Harbaugh's not as good as Saban, Meyer or Dantonio." Harbaugh is every bit as good if not better and his legacy is far from having been written. Every coach gets second guessed and should always be self improving the program. Criticism is fair but let him build the damn program. The lunacy, if you are a real fan, does not help.

Yeah...  The idiocy starts with snowflakes harping about a single loss on the season for a top 10 team with a brand new offense.  The 'sleepovers and Rome' crowd scream about results now, but then give Will Muschamp 5 years to 'build' a program at South Carolina without any complaining about mediocre seasons.

Brady Hoke lit the dumpster on his way out of town, Harbaugh is still putting the fire out.

It's just sad how some people have reacted. Primarily because those same people that are complaining don't have in their minds an alternative. It's just bull crap piling on top of bull crap. When we play; for the first time in 8 years or so we expect to win! Wanna know why? Harbaugh! Our coach has put confidence back into our fan base and is being betrayed by some for being good! At this stage of his Michigan coaching career, it’s too easy to call Jim Harbaugh a failure for his poor record against Michigan State and Ohio State or his so-so record against ranked opponents.*

I prefer to consider that Jim Harbaugh at Michigan hasn’t yet had a top-notch quarterback; his best offensive lineman who probably should be at center is playing out of his position at left tackle; his second best offensive lineman is recovering from a terrible knee injury suffered early last season and won’t play this season; there’s very little highly skilled talent among the other offensive lineman who’ve played for him; he hasn’t had an explosive running back; and he’s currently missing his best wide receiver.  He also might be missing his best offensive assistant coach who’s now at UCLA.

Would having Grant Newsome, Tarik Black and Wilton Speight on the field and Jedd Fisch calling plays on offense have made a difference against Michigan State last Saturday? We’ll never know.

Harbaugh will have three opportunities this season to coach Michigan to a major upset victory – against Penn State, Wisconsin and Ohio State, each of whom should be favored to win. At this point in the season, he probably needs to just win one of them.  But his team still has to beat Indiana, Rutgers, Minnesota and Maryland.
_____________

*  Michigan was 3-2 against ranked opponents in 2015 (beating No. 22 BYU 31-0, No. 13 Northwestern and No. 19 Florida 41-7; losing to No. 7 Michigan State 27-23 and No. 8 Ohio State 42-13) and 1-2 against ranked opponents in 2016 (beating No. 8 Wisconsin 14-7, losing to No. 2 Ohio State 30-27 and No. 10 Florida State 33-32). That’s not counting the 49-10 win over eventual Big Ten champion Penn State early in the season.

Harbaugh will be fine.

I would like to see him win a surprise game that he's not supposed to though.  For his own sake.

One of those Dantonio / Ferentz specials where he pulls a rabbit out of the hat.

It's happened to him enough times that the law of avereages should put him on the other side of it for once.

Don't give up on Harbaugh.  The guy really is a great football coach.  He'll get the offense righted this season.  I wouldn't want anyone else coaching Michigan football.

Again, for what seems like the millionth time, who is giving up on Harbaugh? Specifically, name one user on here who is giving up on him. I haven't seen it. He is fine. He isn't going anywhere for a while. We're going to win a lot of games. And you know what? We're going to have plenty of praise and criticism both for him. That's how it works when you get paid millions of dollars, and especially when it is a public position.

Let's all relax, take a deep breath, and wait for tomorrow so we can really start bitching. HAHA

He has top-10 overall talent and a shitstain of an offense. He’s 1-4 against his rivals. Yes, he’s underperforming.

Not saying he should be on the hot seat or that he shouldn’t be given more time. He’s the best man for the job right now. But he’s had three years and the results, at least on offense, are bad.

Oh, c'mon.

1.) He has top-10 overall talent in the sense that his only two recruiting classes (really only one to himself) were top 10 classes, but they're too undeveloped. It's not like Alabama or OSU where they've had top classes for the past five years and each year's starters go in with the same cumulative experience as the previous year's. This is how the adjustment works. Honestly, the standard that Don Brown has held this defense to since last year is a miracle in and of itself, so we should just be grateful for that.

2.) The offense is in the midst of three assistant coaching changes and are without their three best players at each's repected position (Speight, Black, Newsome). It is what it is.

3.) You damn well know the first MSU game and last year's game in Colombus were flukes, so don't even try that.

Nobody should in any corner of the world be thinking Jim is on the hot-seat, and it shouldn't even be put to language to even have to refute. It's ridiculous. The last two offenses were better than the most recent, but that's for a number of reasons, none of which include Jim's coaching pedigree. Don't forget which team had the most players picked in the NFL draft this past year...

It is unacceptable that Harbaugh is not dominating with our loaded 14/15 classes full of offensive studs!!1!1! Inserts comment about the staff's salary.

He can simultaneously be a good coach who has the program trending in the right direction, but has also so far underperformed in several aspects. Considering he is supposed to be the offensive and QB guru, his offenses and QB play have been very underwhelming.

Last year, we had the highest scoring offense ever at Michigan. The year prior, he doubled our win total and made a transfer from Iowa who was run out of town into a very good player who’s now in the NFL. QB play last year was good, and he turned Speight from a lightly recruited 3 star to one of the big tens most efficient passers. I’m not sure if you’re not crediting him for his defenses just because he’s not the coordinator? That wouldn’t make any sense. He’s had good defense everywhere he’s been, at the very least because of the toughness he instills. Plus pro style teams give the defense more rest because the control the ball for much more than a spread offense does. It’s no accident he’s always had good defenses, and I’m not sure why he wouldn’t be credited for his whole team. Additonally, part of the head coaches job is hiring assistants. Great head coaches hire great assistants. So if you’re going to blame him for Drevno, Credit him for Don Brown and the Defense. It’s not just you acting as if he has nothing to do with the defense. Really the only part of your complaint that holds up to any scrutiny, is that this years offense has been down. Which when you factor in our youth, can be partially explained.

I don't think some of the criticism is warranted, but serious question: When is it ok to start expecting the occassional division title, trip to indy, etc? Year 5, 7, 10? At some point that has to be the expectation, no?

Stringer Bell

October 12th, 2017 at 9:35 PM ^

He needs to beat OSU this year, plain and simple.  If you're going to lose to a very mediocre MSU team, you better come back and beat OSU.  Starting off 1-5 against our chief rivals is not a good look.  Before the MSU game I had high hopes for a possible Big Ten championship, now I'll take 8-4 as long as one of those wins is against OSU (losses to PSU, Wisconsin, and an upset loss somewhere)

Maynard

October 13th, 2017 at 10:50 AM ^

So when will criticism be warranted? Serious question. What record against rivals will be the one that is not good enough that we might be able to say something?

If we lose against OSU this year and againg to both next year, is 1-7 bad enough that people can criticize the head coach?

Do I think that will happen? No. And obviously I don't want anything like to happen. But it seems like you are being aggressive in your defense of any criticism of this head coach as if it is just wrong to even question his decisions.

Man fuck this. For those of you holding this stupid idea, Harbaugh is not under performing. Call me back if we lose to MSU next year and then we can talk. This is bullshit. Dude needs 4 years like any other coach. If anything he is o re performing with the hand he was dealt by the rich rod and hoke years. Dude is a winner and next year we win the big ten and go to the mutha fuckin playoffs. Bet.
