Jim Harbaugh fires back at Tim Brando
Tim Brando had this to say yesterday in response to Jim Harbaugh's criticism to Purdue's visitor locker room:

The entire Twitter conversation in the above link is pretty good. Brando looks like a fool trying to defend his comments.
Our Beloved Jim Harbaugh fires back:
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Harbaugh provide a depth chart days before the first game with Florida? Where's the beef? And how does that have anything to do with player safety?

This dude thinks a little to highly of himself and is extremely lazy and bizzare. Just think about a man who is close to snapping over a chart anyone could get for him. He actually wants Harbaugh to furnish it in some kind of weird power struggle. Brando definitely has some kind of syndrum and mason has a true distain for Michigan. Of course isn't that what it all revolves around, dislike for Harbaugh and Michigan. Of course al I can say to that is GO BLUE!!!.

I always thought of him as a respected source for all things CFB, but I guess when the camera is off he is kind of a dick. His comments are just ridiculous and that of someone that is trying to save face and keeps digging his hole a little deeper. Kind of like somewittyname.
September 26th, 2017 at 6:40 PM ^
Who should be more insulted, Brando or somewittyname. Tough call.
September 26th, 2017 at 3:52 PM ^
Trying to equate the two is ridiculous. Some journalists have been lining up behind Tim Brando due to laziness like SVP last night on SportsCenter. There was a pretty lazy take on the ESPN CFB podcast with Ivan Maisel, Heather Dinich, & Brad Edwards that surprised me given that Maisel is usually pretty good. They surmised this was more Harbaugh making an issue out of nothing than a real issue. Their reasoning: Purdue's setup existed before and other players have gotten hurt at Purdue before, but no one said anything then so what is different now? That line of thinking is flawed. Just because no one bothered to say anything before to fix a problem doesn't mean the problem doesn't exist or shouldn't be fixed.
I agree with what Harbaugh says, and it is surprising it has never been brought up before. The problem Harbaugh faces is that he does things like not release an updated roster before the season or depth charts before games that allow others to distract from the important stuff.

The depth chart thing is, ultimately, irrelevant IMO. They'd find some other pretext to bash him.
The bigger issue is that Harbaugh is an independent-thinking guy and that intimidates a lot of people in football, the media included. He asks hard questions that they've been too lazy (or too ignorant) to ask themselves. They don't like coaches who rock the boat. Moreover, guys like Brando are often good friends with the same SEC coaches that Harbaugh has been making look foolish with his innovations like the satellite camps and the overseas trips.

About the depth chart, most of us could have recited a Michigan depth chart after the spring game. But for broadcasters seeing two different teams every week, I can see where not having a depth chart is very annoying. I don't understand why Jim persists with this since it's such a minor detail. Maybe the Big Ten will start requiring it.
September 26th, 2017 at 3:48 PM ^
Even the Air Force PBP person and Glen Mason tweeted in response to support Brando's position. Yes, they can figure it out by printing the roster and watching the film. Doesn't mean you can't go the extra mile to help visiting journalists and media.
September 26th, 2017 at 3:55 PM ^
Of course they agree - they all want someone else to do their job for them.
September 26th, 2017 at 4:06 PM ^
And they also don't need to provide food in the press box for reporters. But Michigan and most schools do.
Being nice to people, being good hosts and helping people do their job is not illegal. And giving someone a depth chart or a roster before the season starts is not doing their job for them. It's helping them do their job.
September 26th, 2017 at 4:14 PM ^
The roster was released prior to the first game per NCAA rules. What don't you get about this?
September 26th, 2017 at 6:03 PM ^
OK great we made it in time before the NCAA deadline. So what? That isn't the point.
On one hand, posters here are telling journalists to stop being lazy and do their job better. On the other, you are supporting that Michigan's athletic department and football team do the bare minimum to just comply with NCAA rules. Shouldn't one aspire to do better than just the minimum? The point of releasing the roster earlier is so journalists can write previews and cover the team better. Every preview for Michigan has incorrect information because there was no roster out earlier in the summer.

You are basically restating Brando's argument. And it's no more convincing coming from you than it is from him.
September 26th, 2017 at 5:57 PM ^
I am not equating the depth chart and the visiting locker room issues. They are 2 totally different entities. One is an inconvenience for reporters that probably can be avoided. The other is a player welfare issue that should be addressed by the conference and NCAA. Brando bringing up the depth charts when Harbaugh is talking about a real issue is petty and stupid. But it also doesn't make Michigan not providing depth charts the right thing to do.

In literally the time it takes to send a tweet bitching about not having a depth chart, you can find one online from any number of sites, including this one. If they can't be bothered to do that bit of research, then they shouldn't be calling games.
September 26th, 2017 at 4:11 PM ^
Harbaugh released the roster on the same day that the NCAA rules say a program must release a roster (during the week prior to the first game). So please tell me again how Harbaugh failed to release a roster, and why the B1G should "require" a roster release that the NCAA already requires?

brando should have not backed himself so far into a corner - hard to realize, hey, maybe i was wrong when you've defended yourself like 30 times first.

As long as Jim Harbaugh makes my job marginally more difficult than I cant support anything he says regarding player safety. Cause I, Tim Brando, AM A JOURNALIST, and as such my job needs to be made as easy for me as possible by those coaches I cover.
He's a fucking turd. A lazy, thin-skinned fucking turd.
September 26th, 2017 at 4:22 PM ^
How hard is it to make out the depth chart? Maybe it was an issue for Florida, but damn it's easy to write one out after that. The media is just so lazy about it, especially the national guys.
September 26th, 2017 at 4:49 PM ^
harbaugh released the roster and depth chart when it was required to be released. so what is the issue?

He made the same argument as Brando on sportscenter.

September 26th, 2017 at 4:30 PM ^
It's just so absurd to conflate the two issues. Even if Harbaugh was 100% in the wrong about depth charts (not that I think he is), it's still irrelevant to player safety with regards to visiting locker rooms and medical equipment.
It'd be like arguing that until satellite camps are outlawed, targetting penalties should not be called.

Thanks!
September 26th, 2017 at 5:39 PM ^
shit...
September 26th, 2017 at 4:38 PM ^
Because Michigan doesn't release a depth chart, obviously it's okay to embezzle, steal Girl Scout cookies, and commit aggravated mopery! It's a clear equivalence.
September 26th, 2017 at 4:43 PM ^
why does everyone keep bringing up something that isnt true? he released one when he was obligated to do so. this all stems from the stupid nj writer who had nothing better to do and wanted some attention. and for some reason everyone keeps repeating something that isnt true. not one game has been played where there wasnt a full roster and depth chart available.
September 26th, 2017 at 4:59 PM ^
September 26th, 2017 at 5:15 PM ^
where did you hear that? once more ,when it was required to have a depth chart and roster available , he did. there was no problem.
