Michigan up to 7th in both Coaches Poll and AP Poll

Submitted by pfholland on
Coaches Poll: http://sportspolls.usatoday.com/ncaa/football/polls/coaches-poll/

Clemson is 2nd over Oklahoma by exactly one point. Also of interest is Penn State falling to 5th, Ohio State falling to 9th, and Wisconsin falling to 12th. Based on the "Others Receiving Votes" Maryland is 31st, one spot ahead of Notre Dame.

AP Poll: http://collegefootball.ap.org/poll

The AP has Oklahoma solidly in 2nd over Clemson. Penn State is 5th, while Ohio State only fell to 8th, and Wisconsin only fell to 10th.

If turnovers are unavoidable with such a young offense, I'd rather see us turn the ball over in an effort to be more aggressive in attacking defenses by getting the balls in the hands of our playmakers. Of course, in order to do that, you have to deliver balls on a more timely and accurate basis. Wilt's completion percentage over 2 games is concerning. I'd like to more higher completion shorter to intermediate routes (fb, rb, te and slots).

At this point the label Mistake Prone fits Wilton Speight. He has flashes of good play but then it will be wiped out by a key fumble or overthrow. He should really never be fumbling the ball. If he can correct that problem then Michigan shot at a National Championship would markedly improve.

On the other hand, he is having to manage the game more due to an inexperienced offense. Did anyone see him motioning to a receiver yesterday to step up to the line? I think so of the additional aspects of the game he is having to manage is distracting him from executing QB fundamentals.

Agree with this - it's obvious why the coaches like Speight. He seems to make all the right reads (I've rarely seen him throw obviously dumb passes), he's cool in the pocket, and he's obviously very heady. On the downside, he gets erratic with his accuracy pretty frequently and he seems to make back-breaking mistakes (e.g. fumble at OSU, fumble on the handoff vs. Cincy). My guess is Peters has more accuracy and better physical tools but is still lacking the grasp of which reads to make when (pure speculation). If Peters and Speight had a baby it would probably be the next coming of Andrew Luck, but alas they have not had a baby.

I agree but did any of the qbs I mentioned not have the same problem or worse in their junior years? My point is people are freaking out but the truth is speight fits the mold of the average Michigan qb no better no worse. Only thing hurting speight are those ints returned for td which I think people can't get out of their minds hence the added hate

I definitely don't think he's bad (top 3 in the B1G?), and a lot of teams would kill for a QB of his caliber. The problem is the much of the fanbase (myself included) has ratcheted up expectations such that we want to win the B1G and contend for a national championship. I have questions about the team's ability to do either of those things when he plays like he has for the past 5-6 games or so. Given the importance of running a pro-style passing attack in Harbaugh's system it's hard to see the team taking the next step without a truly kick-ass QB. Hope I'm wrong.

This is exactly what I was talking about yesterday. You have guys on here acting all sanctimonious about people booing at a game they paid to go to, but don't say shit about the fact that people go on a site and bash these same players in much harsher terms.

So tell me again why it is so horrible to boo but saying shitty things on here is so much better. Personally, I don't care. I think they are big boys and they can take criticism as much as the next person. I just don't get the argument by guys like bronxblue and Leboo James.

Rudock came in for one season and improved dramtically through the course of the season.

Speight isn't getting better. He's a fixed, frustrating quantity. If we had an great OL that would be okay. But the combo of Speight being average and the OL continuing to be very problematic is going to cost us wins this season.

Looks about right to me. Can't disagree with the top 4, and maybe Michigan is a tad high, but who should really rank ahead of us? Maybe Okie State, maybe FSU (FWIW, I think there's a bit of projection in the FSU ranking given Francois is injured - I think they'd be higher if he doesn't get injured).

Well, moving up to #7 is pretty much what I was expecting after our performance and OSU losing so badly. Though I wouldn't have been too surprised if OK State had moved in front of us. It was a close vote to keep us in front of them.

We didn't play very well against Cincinnati, but we made the final score look just good enough to not get punished by the voters.

OU was behind them in the polls, and they had to play against OSU at home. The results were dramatically different than the polls suggested. Yes, early season caveats apply, but the are numerous examples of late season and bowl season upsets also. Polls are indicative, but not definitive.

Oklahoma has a claim for #1 in my opinion based on the fact that they beat the #2 team in the country on the road while Alabama beat #3 on the road. Not much difference but what difference there is goes to Oklamhoma.

in the overall sloppiness and lack of focus,  its understandable..Coming off a big emotional win on a national stage against a big time opponent there was bound to be some let down...it happened....so we just move forward...If our defense continues to improve we will be in every game

Yesterday on the call Brock Huard mentioned that Cincinnati was giving a lot of looks that they didn't vs A Peay. Given Fickell is a Buckeye I wouldn't be surprised if he tried calling as vanilla a game as possible last week saving the expanded playbook vs UM, for whom I bet they would've game planned a bunch for last Off-season.
