Did anyone else hear Braylon Edwards yesterday

Submitted by ldevon1 on

I guess Braylon will be doing a weekly guest appearance on the Mike Valente show every Thursday at 5:00pm on 97.1 The Ticket in Detroit, and yesterday he was on fire with the wildest "takes" Just a few that I heard, and feel free to add if you heard him.

1. He is obviously red assed about KeKoa Crawford wering the #1. Said it's "Jim's thing" and he feels that a player should have to earn it, the way Carr made him earn it.

2. No defensive player should ever wear that number.(#1)

3. Brandon Peters should be starting: Anyone that saw the spring game, and some fall practice knows that Peters is the best QB on the team.

4. Rashan Gary needs to get in shape: He takes plays off and doesn't spend maximum effort on every play

5. Jim needs to utilize the TE's more to open things up for the WR's: They need to incorporate more crossing routes for the TE's.

6. Wilton Speight is what he is: "The so called QB guru" thinks he can make Speight into something he isn't capable of being.

Those are just a few I can remeber off of the top of my head. I've never really been a big Braylon fan, from the time he tried to Hi Jack the #1 for his own selfish purposes, to some of his comments during the RR era, but this is on another level.

So the OP just lists some tepid criticisms Braylon has, and leaves out the numerous positive things he had to say. The OP obviously has a bias against Braylon, and his own takes from the interview should be taken with less than a grain of salt. The OP just really sucks.

Listen to the interview before you comment. What I heard is Braylon giving his honest opinions, and they are a breath of fresh air. Many were positive, some critical. Even his discussion about the #1 is thoughtful and well-considered, and pretty neutral. I think some of you should probably think about why a black man who thinks for himself and has some (relatively few and tame) criticisms of the program makes you react so negatively. I bet if it were Tom Brady or Jake Long with some critical comments, the reaction would not be so harsh.

Honest opinions, or "Hot takes"? The reference to Jim being the "so called QB guru", is that an opinion, or a flame inducing take? Rashan Gary taking plays off, Hot take or honest opinion? I remeber someone accusing Braylon of taking plays off when he was in the pro's and he was none to happy. He had a chance to say he thought Kekoa deserved to wear the #1, but he never did. Braylon being a black man has nothing to do with this, and why race has to be an issue in this discussion just shows the frame of mind you are coming from. He has his opinion, I have my opinion, and you have your opinion, no one said you have to agree.

Give the #1 to Foug. Or the Panda. Or whoever is the absolute furthest thing from a WR. Whatever destroys this idea that things must stay the way they were when this person or that one was around sounds like the way to go.

I just listened to it. OP, you obviously dislike Braylon and skewed the podcast into making it sound like Braylon is a bad guy. You are presenting info like CNN talking about Trump or Fox talking about Hilary. Braylon was not disrespectful or anti-Michigan in this piece at all. Lets not forget Jim Harbaugh once had a public opinion about Michigan student athletes and their majors that ruffled enough feathers people thought he would never be back at Michigan.

You can't speak about that. He's a god among men here, he can do no wrong.

If I could recite some of the things people were saying about JH when he made those comments when he was at Stanford, it would make anyone blush.

1. Agreed. You should have to earn it by your play on the field. Not the way Hoke did it. If all you have to do is name all the players who ever wore #1 then you might as well hand me the jersey right now.

2. Disagreed. If you're good enough it shouldn't matter what side of the field you play on. I can't think of one person who would have a problem with Woodson wearing #1.

3. Disagreed. Harbaugh started Luck when he was a redshirt freshman which is the same situation as Peters. So I have to believe that as bad as I think Speight is, if Harbaugh has him as the starter he has to be the best we have.

4. To be determined. It was one game and he was getting doubled all game. It's too early in the season to tell.

5. Agreed. I don't recall seeing too much of the TE's against FL.

6. Agreed. I don't see what Harbaugh sees in Speight. But going back to #3, Speight is probably the best option we have. At this point, our options at QB aren't the greatest. Peters will be ready at some point, but he isn't there yet or else he'd be in the game ala Luck.

Some of what he says is spot on. Some not. But it's time for Michigan fans to be badass, not delicate. Hearing someone talk trash builds the callouses as coach says.

To be fair, I do agree with him on #1. It's been a tradition for a while to give the #1 jersey to a great receiver. And now suddenly there are two of them? Both guys who haven't proven anything? Harbaugh's obviously operating under the belief that it's just another number. For Braylon, who wore it when it meant something great, though, it's understandable that he wouldn't feel the same. It's also understandable that he wouldn't be alone in that regard.

...sick and goddamned tired of braylon's hard-on for the #1 jersey. braylon was great, but nowhere near as great as anthony carter.  if we ever retire that number, it will be because of AC, not braylon.

...except he was presented with a choice - bitch or don't bitch.  i didn't hear it (and won't try to, fwiw - valenti makes my ears bleed), but it sounds like he chose to bitch...but i'll take my foot off the gas on this one.

1- I don't even think this would have been brought up if he wasn't asked.

2- He really didn't bitch that much about it. The OP portrayed this entire conversation horribly. He has his stance on how people should earn it, and that's about it. He wasn't mad at all.

It's not your fault. The conversation was summed up horribly and has completely skewed people's thinking.

I knew it was only a matter of time before we hear from Braylon about #1. Especially after three players wearing it. One being a DB, and another being a line backer. It's almost like a rooster at dawn. Right on time.

and don't think it was as bad as the OP presented it. While I may not agree with some of his opinions (Gary's play in particular) I didn't think I heard anything from him that I haven't seen someone post on this board.

I thought he spoke very flippantly regarding Harbaugh (quarterback guru), which does seem to indicate him having an axe to grind, and I understand his thoughts on the #1 jersey but he didn't come off that bad to me. If anything, he comes off fairly arrogant in his opinions but that's to my ears.

Anyway, former players have opinions, and sometimes they won't be rosy and sweet, but I don't see why so much vitriol is occasioned when their criticisms are generally fair.

I agree with most here that Braylon had a general negative outlook. That said; if Valentti had any choice in the matter I am certain that this is the type of host he was looking for to further stir the pot. Now he can say "your guy" says this to antagonize the Michigan fans.

I try not to get too worked about this kind of stuff but the Peters thing caught my attention. Would love to see him in action this week if at all possible even if it is against shitty competition.

I agree with a lot of Braylon's takes, and a lot of them are much more nuanced then you're presenting them.

I totally agree that you should earn the #1.

I agree that Speight's progress from the Orange bowl to the Florida game was not impressive.

Also, Braylon never said Peters was the best QB on the team.

On the Gary issue it's 2 things to me. I'm not positive, but it seemed as if he played the most snaps out of all the starters. So he might not have displayed the same burst on every play because he was out there more. Secondly, I think he's a good DE, but would be an otherworldly DT. Unfortunately for him he won't play much there this year due to Hurst, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see him kicked inside next year.

Braylon didn't come out and completely dog UM and Harbaugh like he did RR but the saltiness was still present. The only thing I'm tired of hearing about is the #1 jersey. Other Michigan greats(some greater than Braylon) haven't complained about their numbers being some kind of sacred honor. I loved Carter and Alexander and Braylon. But it wasn't even a "thing" until Lloyd used his Yoda powers to make Braylon have to earn it.

McSomething

September 8th, 2017 at 2:53 PM ^

I didn't like the whole issue surrounding the #1 when Braylon was here. I hated it after he left and RichRod took over. I still hate the view it should be a receiver, and they should earn it. Either make it like any other number, or take it out of rotation altogether.

The Bo guys were more supportive (or defensive) about RichRod, but a lot the Lloyd guys really whined about anything RR did.  This is not meant to be a defend RichRod post, but just a reminder that those dudes acted like some buttholes.

Must be tough to have been such a great player in college, and then washed out so hard afterward. I understand his bitterness. His life was ruined

Avon Barksdale

September 8th, 2017 at 3:56 PM ^

To say he was never a star really isn't fair either. He was a Pro Bowler until his crew had problems with LeBron's crew and then Cleveland turned on him. He also never played on a team with an even decent quarterback and still put up admirable numbers.

PurpleBeaverEater

September 8th, 2017 at 4:49 PM ^

He had one pro-bowl season which was phenomenal and 2 decent seasons. Aside from that he was mostly middling or worse. I'd advise you to revisit his career. But yeah, professional athlete, definitely has more money than me.

uncle leo

September 8th, 2017 at 6:27 PM ^

Fucking clear point. Calling his life "ruined?" Absolute embarassment. If that's a "ruined life," I'd sign up for that right now.

Every athlete who makes a roster is infinitely more successful in life than us. Period. They are doing something that is about the same as winning the lottery.

PurpleBeaverEater

September 9th, 2017 at 11:24 AM ^

I'll agree that ruined was a poor choice o words, sure. I definitely don't think success is only measured by dollar bills though. His earnings keep getting brought up as if they somehow measure his success in the game, and they don't. He was one of the best receivers in college football, then went to the NFL and lived up to his potential/hype in only one season and then a couple of other good years. Other than that he was shopped around, cut from rosters, and had issues with the law. I guess if I were "successful" in the NFL, I wouldn't want there to be legal issues tied to my name, nor would I want to be "OK" and shopped around, while ending my career after being cut from a roster/only working the practice squad. Especially after being one of the most dominant receivers in college football for 3 straight seasons. Also peculiar that he would be so successful, yet settle into doing radio shows with Valenti. What do I know though? I don't make professional athlete money, so my life is a failure

Who cares who wears #1. Never understood why we made such a big deal out of it. I doubt Peters is the best QB, otherwise Harbaugh would be playing him. I do agree with incorporating more TE's...I think he will eventually. I haven't noticed Gary taking plays off, good god, he noticed this in 1 game?

PurpleBeaverEater

September 8th, 2017 at 4:56 PM ^

I agree about the jersey number, but I guess it makes a difference to some people. I think the TE's will get more action as the season wears on and they can prove themselves more. Lot of rotation in the first game. Plus, it's Harbaugh. Also don't recall seeing Gary take plays off

Comments not directed to OP but Braylons comments.

1. Too much is made of #1. I think #2 has more cache and should be retired (talking about #1 and #2 on sports forum is kind of odd:-). He is obviously red assed about KeKoa Crawford wering the #1. Said it's "Jim's thing" and he feels that a player should have to earn it, the way Carr made him earn it.

2. It is odd looking but who really cares. No defensive player should ever wear that number.(#1)

3. If Brandon would be better option Brandon would be out there, period. Brandon Peters should be starting: Anyone that saw the spring game, and some fall practice knows that Peters is the best QB on the team.

4. Never seen Gary take a play off. Never, not once. He has the best physique of any of the down lineman.  Looks like a 280 lb LB. Rashan Gary needs to get in shape: He takes plays off and doesn't spend maximum effort on every play

5. Agree. Was saying that for most of the Florida game. Jim needs to utilize the TE's more to open things up for the WR's: They need to incorporate more crossing routes for the TE's.

6. I think WS will have All B1G numbers by end of season and lead us to win vs OSU. Harbaugh is a Guru.  Look at Jake Rudock, an Iowa Cast off.  Wilton was a 3* Hoke after thought. Wilton played well until his injury. Still not convinced that injury didn't affect his throwing motion.  Also having new recievers is a big adjustment.

According to his Wikipedia page Wilton Speight had a severe collar bone injury which required a metal plate and screws to repair. Not sure which collar bone but if it was the same shoulder he injured last year he may have re injured an injury from high school. Let's al give Wilton some credit for being a warrior who plays through injury and has been a pretty damn good leader.
