OT (Sort of): Hump Day Quiz -- Michigan vs. the SEC
This has been another year in the headlines of Michigan vs. the SEC; Harbaugh vs. Pete Finebum, etc. And in just three weeks, we will be facing off against the Florida Gators. So, why not an easy pop quiz about Michigan's history with the SEC.
Again, please do not loook up the answers before you post -- it ruins the fun for everyone. And I suggest that after you read the questions you scroll down to the bottom and post your responses before reading everyone else's. That way, no spoilers. So, here we go.
Question 1: In the entire history of Michigan football, we have played just 37 games against current SEC teams, with one game ending in a tie. WHAT IS MICHIGAN'S RECORD IN THE REMAINING 36 GAMES AGAINST THE SEC?
Question 2: CAN YOU NAME THE ONLY SEC TEAM THAT MICHIGAN HAS NEVER PLAYED?
Question 3: CAN YOU LIST EVERY SEC TEAM THAT MICHIGAN HAS BEATEN? (Feel free to guess the number of wins against each of them.)
Question 4: CAN YOU NAME EVERY SEC TEAM THAT HAS EVER BEATEN MICHIGAN? (Again, feel free to guess the number of losses.)
Answers will be posted tomorrow with some interesting commentary on the history of Michigan vs. the SEC. Have fun.
Question 2 : I'm guessing that Michigan has never played LSU.
I remember that game well. Watched it with my half brother and his dad. The announcers kept making a point that Auburn's RB gets better as the game goes on. But he really never got going. So late in the game he'd keep plowing for 1 or 2 yards only and my brother's dad would say with astonishment, "He just keeps getting better!"
EDIT: Just looked it up. It was 2001. Rudi Johnson was their RB. He had 25 carries for 85 yards.
They also played Auburn in a Sugar Bowl back in the Bo Jackson days in the early 80's. Seems like we lost a field goal fest 9-3 if I remember.
Steve Smith threw the ball all over the place and nobody wearing a Michigan jersey could catch a pass when they really needed to. Sad.
Q1 - As a WAG, Imma say 24-12.
Q2 - Mississippi State. (Another educated WAG - I mean, why would we bother going to Starkville, and SEC teams notoriously don't head north?) Second guess would be UGA.
Q3 - Wins against Bama, Florida, Tennessee, Ole Miss, LSU, Mizzou, Vandy, USC (NTUSC), UK, Arkansas
Q4 - Losses against Bama, Auburn, Florida, Tennessee, Texas A&M, USC (NTUSC), Arkansas (at least we lost Mallet to them, so that should count)
I definately don't remember any game against Miss St., ever, right guys?

but I can understand why you'd not (want to) recall it.
Except for that game never happened.

I can still hear those damn cowbells

I seem to remember 485 yards allowed by Michigan of which a considerable portion can be attributed to Relf's legs. I also remember us working really, really hard to squeeze 2 TDs from about 350 yards of offense largely wasted.
I also remember being very tipsy after this game. That's about it.
Q2 - Did you already forget that Michigan got waxed by Mississippi State in the 2011 Gator Bowl ? (Rich Rod's only bowl at Michigan, and his last game).
I was there, so I'll never forget. I can still hear the cowbells.
Sat near the band. At least they had a good performance that day.
enjoy the rest of the weekend in jax though. It is a nice little sleepy Florida town
August 9th, 2017 at 11:11 AM ^
Sleepy-- maybe.
Definitely not a little town, though. It's the largest city in Florida, and 12th largest in the country.

The cowbells. Dear God the cowbells.
In the parking lot. The concourses. The bathrooms. *shudders*
I also sat near the band, and will agree it was about the only positive from that day
I blocked that out of memory.
A) 25-12
No assistance on other ones. I answered the bottom three first, I swear!
B) LSU
C) Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, Georgia, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Tulane (originally SEC), Texas AM, Missouri, Georgia Tech (former SEC).
D) Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi St, Texas AM, Missouri, Tennessee
A) 25-11. Something like 10-0-1 versus Vandy and 15-11 versus the rest
B) We've never played LSU? (WAG). I distinctly remember games versus Bama, MSSt, SoCo, UF, Auburn, and Tenn. Could be Ga or Ky, I don't remember having played them. I'll stick with LSU though.
C) Michigan has beaten every SEC team except LSU (since I am guessing we haven't played them), MSSt and Tennessee since they beat us recently in bowl games and I don't recall playing them before.
D) Michigan has lost to Bama, MSST, Tenn, Auburn, aTm, Mizzou and SoCo. Probably missing one or two there.
Suck it, SEC.
I could go there and cheat, but what fun is that!
The 1922 Vanderbilt game was a soccer special: 0-0. Other than that, we are 10-0 against them; which is expected.
1) 28-8
2) Georgia
3) Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Arkansas, LSU, Florida, Vandy, Kentucky, South Carolina, Missouri
4) Alabama, Mississippi State, Auburn, Tennessee, South Carolina, Texas A&M

2: LSU?
3: Florida, Alabama, Auburn, Vandy, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Georgia, Ole Miss

Never played LSU
Loses to Bama (2x), Auburn, A&M, South Carolina (2x), Miss St, Tenn, Missouri, Georgia,
Wins over Ark, Miss, Auburn, Bama, A&M, Florida, Georgia, SC, Vandy, Missouri and maybe Kentucky?
Wild ass guesses to follow:
1) 21-15
2) I have no recollection on M playing the following: Mizzou, Arkansas, TAMU (although it seems like we may have played them in an Alamo Bowl a long time ago), LSU, Ole Miss, Vandy, Kentucky or Georgia. My guess here is Kentucky.
3) Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, TAMU, Vandy, LSU, Ole Miss, Georgia, Mizzou.
4) Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, South Carolina, Miss St.

Nope - Michigan beat Arkansas in the 1999 Citrus Bowl while they were members of the SEC.

We've played Missouri several times, including the first loss of the Schembechler era when the Tigers came into Ann Arbor and kicked's Bo's ass 40-17.

I was a freshman that year, sitting in the end zone. The last thing I remember was the score being something like 7-3. I was just 18 and was introduced that afternoon to my new friends Ripple and Boone's Farm. The rest is history -- and a blur.
BTW, that Mizzou team was really good, going on to play Ped State in a New Year's Day Bowl (when there weren't many bowl games to go around).
was Dan Devine, who later was ND's coach when Michigan resumed the series with the Irish in '78.

- LSU
- Michigan has beaten Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt

Going off of WD's answers, which I assume are mostly right, I likewise got this mostly right. Horray!

Do we include Tulane, Georgia Tech and Sewanee in our SEC calculation?

Out of curiosity, I looked up which other P5 teams we've yet to play. I found: LSU, TCU, Iowa State, Louisville, and Clemson.
