OT: Who are the best rock vocalists?
Here is my incomplete list. As I'm a child of the 80's and 90's it is weighted that way. I'm sure there are more that you guys will advocate for.
Chris Cornell (Soundgarden. Audioslave, Solo)
Thom Yorke (Radiohead)
Brad Delp (Boston)
Steve Perry (Journey)
EDiT: Sorry hit enter before done, more complete list continues
Robert Plant (Led Zepplin)
Van Morrison
Freddie Mercury (Queen)
Bono (U2)
Have at it. Who else belongs here?
Yeah, I logged in to submit Mercury. Instead, I just have to +1 you.
So...I'll add Dennis DeYoung (Styx)
(reads own post again)
Ummm...where did I write that Dennis was on the same level as Mercury? The OP has listed multiple singers that he likes, I listed two that I liked without giving any particular weight to either singer.
Reading is hard.
If you add a second vocalist to a list of best rock vocalists, you are implying that they are on a similar level, as they are both worthy of inclusion on a list of best rock vocalists.
If you don't think they are on the same level, then why would you write them both in for a list of best rock vocalists? You didn't need to explicitly say you view them as equals, your decision to add them both to the list of best rock vocalists says that...unless you don't know what best means.
English is hard.
Don't say this is a question without a correct answer, because this is the correct answer.

So, I had no idea who P J Harvey was. If you're refering to the woman I saw in my search results...to quote John McEnroe: You cannot be serious!
blech
(Coldplay)
Chris deserves a moment of silence if you haven't thought about him lately. Died very recently in Detroit. Very sad.
Chris Cornell? Comeon guys. I mean, the guy could hit notes but his actual voice isn't that iconic or enjoyable. Only if you like that music, then yeah he stands out. Up against the all time rock vocalists? Not a chance. Wow!
Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters
Thom Yorke from Radiohead
Matthew Bellamy from Muse
Maynard James Keenan from Tool
BTW, it's funny, because I think Radiohead is awful and massively overrated. Thom Yorke sounds like a deflating balloon.
Glad somebody mentioned Matt Bellamy. The lyrics themselves are mostly meh but that guy can sing.
Axl Rose has wild range and unique sound.
Also Sting
Depending on your definition of "Rock Vocalist" Van Morrison. Not exactly sure if Van is pure rock (probably not) but man, he's got on of the greatest voices of all time.
he wasn't one of the first people mentioned. He has great range. Listen to his version of Love Reign O'er Me from the Who rock honors about 10 years ago, it's phenomenal.

I like most of the above and have been trying to come up with additional vocalists. One that jumped to mind right away is Geddy Lee of Rush. He has power and sublety with very good range.
Jim Morrison, John Denver, Robert Plant, Iggy, Rob Tyner, Jimi Hendrix, Little Richard, Chester (Howlin' Wolf) Burnett.
While Iggy and Hendrix aren't classic vocalists, they get high marks for distinctive style.
John Denver had the best, very powerful voice.
Morrison was mesmerizing, and Ray Manzerak, Robby Kreiger and John Densmore were a really professional, well accomplished musical group.
My favorite band is Mastodon and they have 3 vocalists, each of whom is very distinct from the other. Aside from their skill and Brann's drumming style, this is the most unique aspect of the group.
First singer - Brann Dailor (Drums)
Second singer - Troy Sanders (Bass)
Third singer - Brent Hinds (Guitar)
