OT: Who are the best rock vocalists?
Here is my incomplete list. As I'm a child of the 80's and 90's it is weighted that way. I'm sure there are more that you guys will advocate for.
Chris Cornell (Soundgarden. Audioslave, Solo)
Thom Yorke (Radiohead)
Brad Delp (Boston)
Steve Perry (Journey)
EDiT: Sorry hit enter before done, more complete list continues
Robert Plant (Led Zepplin)
Van Morrison
Freddie Mercury (Queen)
Bono (U2)
Have at it. Who else belongs here?
Freddie Mercury
Great range and variety in his voice
Yeah, I logged in to submit Mercury. Instead, I just have to +1 you.
So...I'll add Dennis DeYoung (Styx)
On the same level as Freddie Mercury (or even anywhere close?) ???
You can't be serious.
(reads own post again)
Ummm...where did I write that Dennis was on the same level as Mercury? The OP has listed multiple singers that he likes, I listed two that I liked without giving any particular weight to either singer.
Reading is hard.
If you add a second vocalist to a list of best rock vocalists, you are implying that they are on a similar level, as they are both worthy of inclusion on a list of best rock vocalists.
If you don't think they are on the same level, then why would you write them both in for a list of best rock vocalists? You didn't need to explicitly say you view them as equals, your decision to add them both to the list of best rock vocalists says that...unless you don't know what best means.
English is hard.
Obviously. How in the hell is this even a discussion?
END OF CONVERSATION.
Don't say this is a question without a correct answer, because this is the correct answer.
Conversation over. It's not even close.
Dave Grohl
He's got a lot of power, but he abandoned any sort of subtlety or variation a long time ago.
Also, that thing he does live where the last line of every verse is omitted in favor of a wordless scream...is infuriating...
Are my two favorites. Robert Plant and Axl Rose are my next two.
I am sure I am forgetting a bunch of others I like.
For women, Gwen Stefani and Fiona Apple
Fiona Apple would also win best eyes. Gorgeous.
Best rock singer is Roger Daltrey in his prime.
Half right, but you misspelled "Fiona Apple". The correct spelling is "PJ Harvey".
of your jib
So, I had no idea who P J Harvey was. If you're refering to the woman I saw in my search results...to quote John McEnroe: You cannot be serious!
blech
No broads
Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar, Annie Lennox and Ann Wilson are all great vocalists. At least as good, and a lot better imo, than Thom Yorke.
You know who else is better than Yorke? David FREAKING BOWIE!!!
The mating cats in the alley behind my house.
(Coldplay)
Oh that was a joke. Got it. Lol!
By a long shot. Perry second.
Chris deserves a moment of silence if you haven't thought about him lately. Died very recently in Detroit. Very sad.
Chris Cornell? Comeon guys. I mean, the guy could hit notes but his actual voice isn't that iconic or enjoyable. Only if you like that music, then yeah he stands out. Up against the all time rock vocalists? Not a chance. Wow!
If you've listened to his work on Temple of the Dog and still stand by that, I don't know what to tell ya. Cornell was on another planet.
Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters
Thom Yorke from Radiohead
Matthew Bellamy from Muse
Maynard James Keenan from Tool
Maynard James Keenan's vocals are as mediocre as Tool is overrated. Pseudo-deep, meaningless, and bleak bullshit that panders to basement dwellers and pizza delivery drivers.
you're saying Maynard plowed your wife and your mom?
That's a lot of hurt about a good band.
BTW, it's funny, because I think Radiohead is awful and massively overrated. Thom Yorke sounds like a deflating balloon.
Glad somebody mentioned Matt Bellamy. The lyrics themselves are mostly meh but that guy can sing.
Axl Rose has wild range and unique sound.
And I'll agree with you
Charles Lyell
Also Sting
Depending on your definition of "Rock Vocalist" Van Morrison. Not exactly sure if Van is pure rock (probably not) but man, he's got on of the greatest voices of all time.
he wasn't one of the first people mentioned. He has great range. Listen to his version of Love Reign O'er Me from the Who rock honors about 10 years ago, it's phenomenal.
Same here. EV was my first thought here.

I loved Levon Helm and Rick Danko in the Band
Love me some Levon. Can't believe no Steve Marriott mentions...Plant imitated his vocals
Bad Company
I like most of the above and have been trying to come up with additional vocalists. One that jumped to mind right away is Geddy Lee of Rush. He has power and sublety with very good range.
Jim Morrison, John Denver, Robert Plant, Iggy, Rob Tyner, Jimi Hendrix, Little Richard, Chester (Howlin' Wolf) Burnett.
While Iggy and Hendrix aren't classic vocalists, they get high marks for distinctive style.
John Denver had the best, very powerful voice.
Morrison was mesmerizing, and Ray Manzerak, Robby Kreiger and John Densmore were a really professional, well accomplished musical group.
Hold on. You put Mr. "Sunshine on my Goddamn Shoulders" John Denver on ROCK vocalist list? Suddenly I have an overwhelming urge to light your MGoBlog Rock Vocalist award on fire.
...Roy Orbison. Perhaps none greater than him.
My favorite band is Mastodon and they have 3 vocalists, each of whom is very distinct from the other. Aside from their skill and Brann's drumming style, this is the most unique aspect of the group.
First singer - Brann Dailor (Drums)
Second singer - Troy Sanders (Bass)
Third singer - Brent Hinds (Guitar)
Spoken like a child of the 90s....
Eddie
