OT: Cord cutting

Submitted by MGoBoz on

I'm thinking of cord cutting and the only thing holding me back is UM football access. Any tips on how to watch the games on a smart TV, sans streaming options?

I picked up PSVue last fall for football games and liked it enough that I've actually held on to it after the season ended. You do get days where things seem to buffer a lot (which drives me absolutely nuts), but I find that it works totally fine the vast majority of the time.

And I should mention that I left my internet plan as the same cheap-skate level that it was before signing up for PSVue.

It is a bit of a work in progress. Virtual MVPDs have a ways to go before they begin to replace cable/satellite en masse. And they all have notable voids in their channel lineups (for example, PS Vue doesn't have the Viacom channels). Personally, I hate the cable/satellite kleptocracy so much that I'm willing to put up with the occasional issues in order to limit my dependence on Comcast.

Reddit typically has streams for just about anything. There's a few good streaming websites floating around out there too - I wanna see sportsarefree is one I've used before

Otherwise if you want a little live TV, I was able to catch every Michigan football game last year through PSVue / WatchESPN

I ended my Comcast/Inifinity cable television service in early May (kept internet), but found out that Comcast continued to bill me for it.  Had to waste half an hour with two service people to get a credit/refund.

I've heard the same from other people - that Comcast 'forgets' to stop billing you.

I switched to Hulu.  I expect I will get the ABC games by subscribing to Sling during the season.  I just hope Sling's picture quality has improved since I tried them almost two years ago.

BTW, Hulu for live TV was not working for Android Smart TVs.  I get this through xBox1.

My hang up on this continues to be getting only internet from Comcast (in AA) continues to be very expensive. Internet+PS Vue is only marginally cheaper than my Comcast package.

Anyone have a trick or advice to get cheaper internet from Comcast?

Comcast has an "Internet Essentials" package available to low-income families in some areas: https://www.internetessentials.com/  $10/mo (+tax), 10mbps.

I've read that if you have a child qualified for free lunch at public school, you qualify.  My local elementary school has a high percentage of qualifying kids, so they just make free lunch available for all.  Does that still mean I'm in?  Dunno.  There's an application online at the site above.

Netflix uses something like 4mbps to stream HD, so 10mbps should be sufficient.  I've got a 50mbps plan that averages around 35 and Vue is fine on multiple tvs simultaneously about 95% of the time.  Not sure how low you can go without having problems.

I said "screw Comcast" about a year ago when a local compeitor became available.  Now I pay $81/mo for 50mbps via fiber, and that's more expensive than Comcast offers, but "screw Comcast" since they kept adding fees/taxes and raising my rates unpredicatably.  They DID also keep increasing my speed, but at some point faster didn't matter anymore.

I found Comcast offered much-better than publicly advertised packages when I called to cancel.  They offered a faster internet+basic channels package for around $50/mo to try and keep me - but no HD, 6 months before it went up in price, +fees, +taxes, and still Comcast.

This topic is becoming the new "anyone know where I can watch the game? I will be out of the country" topic.

Question for the cord cutters - my cable/internet bill has a pretty low headline number (like $89/month) but then they add all those extraneous fees and taxes on there, so in actuality it's like $120/month.

When Vue says $45/month, do they mean $45 plus fees & taxes, or is it truly only $45?

Thanks!

I actually do the $35 package that includes FSD, BTN, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNNews, MLB, NFL, FS1, FS2, etc. Plus, no contract. The only shitty thing is that I get some streaming issues more often than I should. I still think it is worth the inconvenience but hope the streaming becomes more reliable.

It isn't the speed (usually between 50-90 Mbps). There are definitely too many streaming issues for me not to get frustrated. I am saving a ton of money over my prior Directv setup. Directv was a better product for sure. I chose to keep my sports and go with a cheaper option. I don't regret it. I am hopeful that streams become more consistently reliable though.

I have Sling and Amazon Fire TV   Its ok for movies and TV shows (most of the time), I have ESPN, FOX Det,   NBCSN.  But I don't have local NBC,  (NHL Playoffs) ABC or the BTN here in Ann Arbor - .  Hooked up an antenna for local channels - doesnt always work well.

This is not good for football  if you like recording the games, and skipping commercials.

All these comments about how cord cutting isn't worth it, it's not really "cutting," I still need to pay for internet, etc. etc.

Cord cutting = freedom. No monthly contract. Change channel packages whenever you want. Cancel when football season is over. Netflix only for a month or so to binge watch that show your friends are raving about. Back to BTN for Michigan football. No renting of a set top box, no added broadcast fees and other TV-related fees. No, it's not as good as choosing channels a la carte, but it's a step in the right direction. I'd much rather have Sling, PS Vue, DirecTV Now, Fubo, etc. rather than just Comcast. Hopefully this competition leads to meaningful wholescale reform of TV in the future.

I cut the cord a couple months ago.  Went with Youtube TV.  $35/month.  It carries the major local networks (abc, cbs, nbc, fox) and a bunch of other channels, including several espn's and btn. Very user-friendly.  Unfortunately no HGTV or FoodTV.  One key drawback at the moment ... it is only available in certain cities right now.  I really like it.  It's worth a look if you are in one of their areas.

I'm going with Hulu Live TV. I haven't tested it yet, because there's a whole thing with the VPN and such, but as soon as that's up and working I'll do my one week free trial to make sure it works with my VPN. Supposed to, but...

have 1gig internet fiberoptic for 79.00 through centurylink. Used to have xfinity 150 blast, and all movies and sports. $212. Now ive cancelled all cable. kodi, firestick, amazon prime, netflix is the way to go. kodi app -exodus, rockcrusher, bob. watchespn app fox sports app dishnow app ustvnow app tnt app etc. Use friends/family dish, direct, and xfinity logins, and watch all the apps. dishnow allows you to watch as if it's a complete reciever. all channels are available that they pay for. xfinity now app is the same way. spread the wealth. love it. kids dont care as long as they have toons and kodi, youtube, netflix. and prime provide too many options for kids to be bored (mind you, my kids dont get much tv time unless its hot as balls outside). wife has diy app. I watch sports. lets all be big fish! colorado springs

Pirating / stealing content by using other people's logins I don't think qualifies as the point of these threads.  Frankly people who steal this content makes the price go up for everyone else who choose to not steal...you know like your friends and family who pay for these services?

i feel great! they feel great using my netflix and firesticks i unlock for them. you are delusional to think thats why the prices go up. its a monopoly and everything will be streamed in the next 10 years. he is "cord cutting". doesnt mean others are. you know better to assume. use that um degree!

Based on your righteous tone, I assume you do not stream any copyrighted material on Kodi without permission? If so, what do you use it for?

Sharing passwords is in a gray area (rules are left vague purposely), but to think it has no impact on the traditional bundle cost and will continue to have no impact on the cost as more and more people share passwords is also delusional.

try this and get FREE account - don't pay for anything until u get it to work. then decide if u want to use DVR and other channels - http://watch.ustvnow.com/refu/ZQmAU9D5LtXEnNtfYcGsUWRuvD4AbW

then get a Firestick and install Kodi

Netflix for 9 bucks a month. I watch TV on my time not on anybody else's time. I don't have to watch a show when it's brand new and airing for the first time. Can't believe how much I was paying for cable back in the day! When it comes to sports, I have the luxury of living in Las Vegas so I can just hop on over to any sportsbook I want. Although SlingTv does interest me.

I had Playstation Vue for football season, but I had to watch the ABC games on my PC through WatchESPN.  All Vue had was ABC On Demand.  I'm curious if Hulu or Youtube has the same issue.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned that to me is a huge deal is the delay. Most streams are 30-60 seconds delayed. So if you're like me and you're watching a game while following twitter/mgoboard/texting with friends, you will find out things first on your phone/tablet prior to seeing them occur on the screen.
