OT: Pulling the cable plug
Youtube is getting in on streaming $35 a month 40 channels plus sports.Been thinking about checking out streaming service like PSvue and pulling the cable plug. http://venturebeat.com/2017/02/28/introducing-youtube-tv/
The best thing I have found is a Fire Stick side loaded with Kodi. Put Exodus on it and you can watch anyting your little heart desires. My kids and I watched the Lego Batman movie a few days after it came out in theaters. There are also live tv apps and sports apps you can add on to it so you will never miss a game.
I can't believe no one has mentioned it yet but Kodi is the way to go for the Fire Stick. Put Exodus and Sports Devil on it and you're set.
PS Vue with Amazon Fire TV and it's not close.

Why not?! It works pretty damned well. Get a basic antenna for CBS games and stream the TBS/TNT/Tru TV games; the stream has been very solid the past couple years I've done this (a nice HD feed).
I use a Roku 2, fwiw.

Looks like they have BTN, so this will be a viable alternative to PS Vue if the price ever goes up.

We pulled the plug on cable after the Super Bowl in 2001. Have not looked back.

Well, a new streaming service was announced today that fixes some of the problems mentioned in those threads. So a new thread might be useful.

At least it's an evolving topic
...most of the redundant threads are literally the same thing over and over and over...

When it comes to cable,

Don't worry though. Comcast has bought so many members of the US government that even though the vast majority of citizens will suffer, net neutrality is about to be undone. Which means that all of us will pay more for all of these streaming services we love. Which means that Comcast will keep providing shitty service and making bank off of it.

the entire cable industry is a monopoly. They got together, split up the U.S. by region, and commenced screwing customers with high cost for crappy service and slow internet.

I pay $200/mo for internet and Directv. These threads have interest for me and while I am always confused about this stuff, the more exposure to it the more things slowly begin to make better sense. Maybe one day I too will opt for something different as this area evolves. At least I know where I can come for future consulting on this topic.
Holy shit. Yeah, you need to definitely do something. I pay $95 for internet and PS Vue together. It cost $99 for Amazon Fire TV to have good apps and a good guide for it and I shell out for Netflix as well. So $104 total for viewing content. And if I get pissed about it ever I can just go into my setting and cancel PS Vue whenever I want and pick it back up if I want the next month/week/day or whatever I see fit. Much better than arguing with cable companies over price or packages and paying for their stupid equipment. Just buy yourself a decent modem/router combo, find an internet provider that gives you 25mbps or greater for a decent price and you're set.

According to the official announcement, yes:
A cloud DVR, with no storage limits. With YouTube TV, you’ll be able to record live TV and never run out of storage. Your cloud DVR can record as many shows as you want, simultaneously, without using precious data or space on your phone and we’ll store each of your recordings for nine months.

I still have the Trey Burke Kansas NCAA game saved on my DVR. That thing's never getting deleted.
February 28th, 2017 at 10:42 PM ^
You have to get that in an HD video file and store it locally. Counting on a DVR system to keep that indefinitely is wishful thinking and someday you'll be sad.
I also had that on my DVR until I finally moved. Now I have this:
I recommend starting around the 1:20:45 mark.
That Burke three. It never, ever gets old. I still geek out like it was the first time I saw it.
A pox on you, Maizer. I saw this clip and just blew 20 minutes watching the end of that game again.
And I regret nothing.
Haha, my pox was already endured because I blew 30 minutes on it myself.

With Youtube they will have a DVR virtual service with unlimited storage will delete after nine months

PSvue has DVR and on demand, but not for every channel
Yes. You can record every show on all at the same time if you want because they are in the cloud. It only holds them for 28 days though.
February 28th, 2017 at 5:36 PM ^
Correct. But go with Amazon Fire TV over the stick because it has a better guide and overall interface.

So I've had Directv since 2006 and I get all the channels I need and all the sports I want for $55 after taxes. Maybe I'm on a loyalty price or something. I don't bundle with any other services.
Never thought about going with anything else because of sports.

February 28th, 2017 at 9:02 PM ^
That's crazy. I've had DTV since 04, and I pay more than double that.
I've had Directv since the mid 90's and pay $115/mo with no movie channels or sports packages. No loyalty program for me.

I'm a PSVue subscriber. Their service looks exactly the same as PSVue from what I can see. Basically the same channels, same price, no new offerings that I could see...not sure what marketshare they think they're going to steal other than just relying on the notoriety they get from the YouTube name
February 28th, 2017 at 5:54 PM ^
It's not like PSVue has cornered the market, so I can see why they'd want to get in before that happens. In the mean time, I'm pretty sure the notoriety from the YouTube/Google name can get them a long way.

I have an appletv and all I pay for is netflix but...
I have hulu from the in-laws
hbo from parents
showtime from parents
btn2go from parents
espn3 from isp
Can watch just about anything, but the sports are almost always not live. Not really a problem since I'm somehow surrounded by no sports fans besides my parents who are aware I almost never watch live, heh.
February 28th, 2017 at 5:56 PM ^
from parents seems like a solution.
I sometimes have that logged in, but usually watch on replay anyways which I can do via just having an internet connection through Charter.

All of the major cord cutting streaming services (Sling, Vue, DTV Now, and now YT) now offer similar channels (and similar # of channels) depending on tier and within $5 or so of each other. The winner will probably come down to DVR functionality, platforms supported, and reliability.
Looks like Vue is leading the pack on those three dimensions. Although I have the $20 Sling package and the price is so good it's hard to bite on the others. Switching to Vue for BTN for three months in the fall is a reasonable compromise for us.
