REPORT/RUMORS: Harbaugh Telling Recruits Pep Hamilton Is Joining Staff (per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport)

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

The other Pep Hamilton thread is off the front page and this is a newer development that sounds like "it's happening."

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport Harbaugh's been telling recruits that Pep Hamilton is joining the staff.

Note on #Browns AHC-offense Pep Hamilton: #Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh has been telling recruits for a few days that he’s joining the staff.

You're wrong, so let me word it this way - you're wrong.

As Mr Yost said in his OP (if you had bothered to read it), was that the thread yesterday mentioned Pep's impending hire.  What he's adding today (that you didn't bother to read) is that Harbaugh is telling recruits that he is being hired.  That is a big difference.  You should try reading for comprehension.  Or maybe just try reading...

this is what is great about having harbaugh as our head coach.  up and coming coaches who want to climb the ranks want to be on his staff.  they want to learn from one of the best in the game.  they will be here for a year or two or maybe even three.  but they will be top notch, and when they leave the next guy will step in and fill the role because... harbaugh

I know people don't like Ian Rapoport but he did take that football to the face pretty well. I probably would have starting cursing like that reporter who had the bug fly in his mouth. Lol

So Pep is the associate head coach/OC/QB coach for the Browns.

The Browns want to keep him apparently and Pep is the one initiating leaving for Michigan.

Another coach that prefers college to the NFL. Surprised Rap and Scheft aren't saying everything about how he doesn't want to leave. And Simmons calling him a coward.

I still find the NFL's need to push the narrative that no one leaves (for good anyway) a bit sad, and worse, the need of rival fanbases to troll others with it even more sad.

I mean, whatever happens here happens, but the NFL beat seems awfully and unusually hurt by the idea that someone like Jim Harbaugh should leave and express no obvious interest in returning, so I wonder if we get to see this with every coach that leaves now, at least to some extent.

Multiple reports here in Cleveland that the Browns do not want to lose him and some are speculating that this is being done to force Jackson to give up the play-calling and turn it over to Hamilton.  This year Pep was the OC but Hue called the plays and many are speculating that Hamilton is using the job offer as leverage to increase his scope of responsibilities with the Browns.

Not saying that is happening but thought it was worth mentioning.  Will sort of come down to which career path Pep wants to pursue.  Staying with Browns would help his pro career - moving to Michigan would help him in college.

Great info, but I also have to reconsider your conclusion. Going to Michigan could likely be better for his pro career than staying in Cleveland. He'll likely have high profile success at Michigan,  not so much at his current organization.

I posted this in the other Pep thread, but here's his track record:

Offensive rankings for Pep offenses:

2011 Stanford Peps: 8th in ypg and 7th in ppg

2012 Stanford Peps: 86th in ypg and 70th in ppg (Post-Luck and 3 returning starters on offense)

2013 Indianapolis Peps: 15th in ypg and 14th in ppg

2014 Indianapolis Peps: 3rd in ypg and 6th in ppg

2015 Indianapolis Peps: 28th in ypg and 24th in ppg (Luck battling 3 different injuries all year)

I don't follow NFL things closely, but those are the only years he is listed as an OC on his Wikipedia page. It's tough to say anything conclusive here other than that he is a really good OC when healthy Andrew Luck is his quarterback. At Michigan, he would probably split the OC job with Drevno. Luck broke some passing records with Pep as his OC and his offenses like to throw deep.

He was the OC but Jackson called the plays on gameday.  And as noted by Swazi - The offensive fell apart as our QB situatiion became a complete joke. The problems on offense had much more to do with lack of pass blocking and Jackson tending to fall in love with the pass and forgetting about Crowell than anything Pep did or didnt do.

This feels like a better fit than Roman. Seems like Roman is more in the mold of Drevno. While Pep appears to have more experience in line with what Fisch has been working on with the QB's and WR 's.

Jackson just now said he expects Hamilton to stay with the Browns and that "we very much want him to stay".  He also said he will continue to call the plays next year so if that matters to Pep he might leave.

AKA, it's probably happening! "We very much want him to stay" doesn't seem like Pep has any interest in being there. Jackson couldn't think of anything better to say than that? Sounds like he is trying to brace the fans for the inevitable.
