Anxiety Levels are High Going into The Game for both UM and OSU fans (poll results)

Submitted by SpikeFan2016 on

Like most of you, I have been unable to focus on much else besides The Game this week; while perusing various OSU and UM websites, I found two interesting polls (one conducted by each fanbase) to detail anxiety levels for The Game. The scales/questions were not identical, but it's interesting to see responses from both sides of this great rivalry given both polls had large sample sizes.

First, the enemies (http://www.elevenwarriors.com/polls/2016/11/nervousness-for-the-game). Eleven Warriors conducted a poll measuring "Nervousness for The Game" (3,208 respondents)

  • 32% of Buckeye fans say they are "Extremely" nervous
  • 49% of Buckeye fans describe themselves as "Moderately" nervous
  • 13% of Buckeye fans are "A Little" nervous.
  • Only 5% of Buckeye fans say they are not nervous.

Maize n Brew's poll had 2,732 responses; the question asked about "Confidence" instead of nerves. You can still vote at the following link: (http://www.maizenbrew.com/2016/11/21/13625024/michigan-wolverines-ohio-state-buckeyes-so-how-confident-do-you-feel-about-the-game)

  • 3% of Michigan fans say they are "Very Confident"
  • 7% describe themselves as "Confident"
  • 45% of Wolverine fans describe themselves as "Optimistic"
  • 25% of UM fans are "Definitely Getting Worried"
  • 17% of us are "Very Worried"
  • 2% of Michigan fans are so hopeless they are having an "Existential Crisis"

Overall, Michigan fans seem more nervous/less confident on the aggregate which makes sense given recent history, home field disadvantage and that we have the most significant injury of either side going into The Game. However, both fan bases are definitely on edge, given over 70% of Buckeye fans are at least moderately nervous.

We are finally back to the way things should be for this great rivalry: tensions and stakes high for both sides.

Football as the modern game started in the 50's and 60's.  Going back past that makes you look pathetic, starting later than that makes you petty.  Counting wins from 1902 as some sort of reason to brag is just as stupid as saying 7 of the last 8.  OVer the last 30 odd years Michigan is 13-16 against OSU with both teams having runs 15 year runs, Michigan from the mid 80's to the late 90's, OSU from 2000-present.  Recency bias gives OSU the bragging rights and nothing makes a Michigan look more pathetic than countering recent dominance with wins from the early 1900's.  Point out Michigan went 12 out of 15 from 1986-2000 if you want to sound just a little less whiney and pathetic.

OMG. You are the cherry pickingest person that I can possibly think of. Do you truly have zero sense for irony? Because that's pretty much exactly how I see you.

If I had the time, or inclination I would go through your post history to prove my point, but I just don't care enough to do it. Keep doing you, wd.

I'm with everyone else. I don't care about the all time record anymore. That might have been an okay response in 2006 after they had won 3 straight, but it's 10 years later, they've played in 4 national title games winning 2 and lost to us once. We need to win. I've seen 2 wins against them since I knew what was going on. TWO. Since 2002!

want to know more about these whispers, who is doing the whispering?  is the person whispering sensuously in your ear or are they just talking quietly because they are low talkers?

Seriously though, where is this chatter coming from?

Twitter.  A couple sources said Speight is going to star

You replied before I could fix it and attribute the tweet to one Jim Weber - the guy who founded Lost Lettermen.  I can't remember who, but apparently someone else with some cache also shared those sentiments.  I'm not verifying the voracity of these rumors, merely acting as a conduit between the blog and the twitterverse.

Agreed; I also think that we have much more to lose than Ohio State does.

We haven't beaten them, or had national success, in such a long time now that we really have to knock them off before we can prove we are legit. Also, our team is much more experienced/older than they are this year; next year that will no longer be the case.

I have my first ever marathon in 19 days, and I'm more nervous about The Game than I am about running my marathon.

I'm seriously freaking out about this game, because there is so much on the line, and I don't want that same feeling I got after that '06 game. My stomach still turns inside out thinking about that game.

Good luck man!  I've only run a half, but that was in formation at Corporal's Course at Henderson Hall.... so doesn't count.

Anyway, after the '06 loss I've been far more numb and beaten up about the program, so I haven't had that same heart ripped out feeling.  I hope we win, but we've been so bad against this team that other than the Luke Fickell year, which was much closer than I would have liked.

I feel ya, but I also feel that this is our year. With all our seniors, we are loaded on both sides of the ball.

Last year doesn't make me anymore confident about this game, but I just feel like we have to get it done this year.

Beating OSU in Columbus would be our National Championship.

??? The numbers say the exact opposite:

44% of UM fans are in the worried/hopeless category.

81% of OSU fans are moderately to extremely nervous.

The poll options were not the same.

I would classify "Optimistic" from our poll as the nearest equivalent to "Moderately Nervous" in their poll; people in our poll who picked Optimistic had to say that they were NOT confident.

18% of OSU fans were in the lowest two categories (a little nervous or not at all nervous), while only 10% of UM fans said they were confident.

This is terrible survey research. A self-selected sample and simple frequency statistics??? I am aghast and the lack of sophistication here... :-)

we lose we will play Louisville in the Orange Bowl or USC/Utah in the Rose Bowl.  I want you to think back approximately 2 years ago, give or take.  I think we will be alright.

That is not to say that this game is not incredibly important.  It absolutely is.  But the fact remains that we again have a spot at the adult table and will continue to improve.

2007 i always expected Michigan to win every game they played... then the horror and the silence happened... since those 2 games i don't get my hopes up anymore because a persons soul can only be crushed so many times...
