More Sparty Crying about Chris Frey

Submitted by Mojo Hall on

Chris Frey's father is upset at the officiating rather than the likelihood that his son played with a concussion without even being checked by MSU for that under concussion protocol.

"Instead of asking questions about our MSU Training Staff. Why don't you start asking the B1G about a targeting review that they skipped."

Right, that 15 yards and ejection for our specials team's player may have lead to a difference in outcome, just like Riley Bullough.

More Sparty tears.  Link is below.

Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said Sunday night that Frey was not diagnosed with a concussion, but could only assume that Frey went through the concussion protocol on the sidelines.

“Yes, I assume that he did because we have Dr. (David) Kaufman on the sidelines to do just that,” Dantonio said. “He was never diagnosed with a possible concussion or anything like that.

This quote sucks. Fuck you Mark.

Didn't even talk to the player or the doctor. The kid was definitely groggy at best. You think he would have checked in to see what was going on. I find his answer irresponsible and offensive

How about roughing the snapper and a damn hold on #24 down the sideline! Lol. Hell state held on Saturday, I remember a run late in the game that included one hell of a hold on the edge. Spartan tears!

If you slow the play down you'll notice that Devin's helmet doesn't hit Frey. It looks to me the Frey was the one leading with his helmet and got hit by Devin's shoulder or forearm.

Zettel hit on Rudock = targeting.

Bolden pushed into MSU player = maybe the worst targeting call I've ever seen.

Bush hit on Frey = probably should have been targeting. That's not a hit that should be encouraged against any team/player. You don't have to hit him helmet to helmet for that block to be devastating and effective.

It's not targeting and that's not debatable.  Helmet to helmet is only relevant when helment to helmet is initial contact (which it is not during this play).  Yes, his head snaps back after helmet to helmet contact, but only AFTER shoulder to shoulder contact.  Bush went right through Frey, just like he was supposed to.  This is not even debatable and the fact that it is being debated is mind boggling.

But he lowered his shoulder and there is no way you can tell me that was the crown of his helmet. He was defenseless only because he wasn't looking at Bush coming at him even though they were ten yards apart when Bush lined him up. If I hear Maise and Blue goggles you sir are obviously trolling this thread and with a pair of Green and White Goggles..

This video shows exactly why it was NOT targeting and why the call on the field was correct (like it or not).  Yes, there was head to head contact during the play, BUT the initial point of contact was shoulder to shoulder.  Head to head came second.  You can watch this video frame by frame and during the second view shown, it's crystal clear.  You cannot call targeting when that happens.

There is also a late hit on Peppers at the end with a guy jumping on well after he is down and tackled by 2 guys. Missed calls happen. The targeting on Peppers is definately leading contact with the crown of his helmet. I'm not sure if peppers counts as a defensless player. Just a Frey was definatly not a defensless player(unless you count putting someone that injured our there).

Frey was likely a defenseless player per the rules, Peppers was absolutely not.

Defenseless player (Rule 2-27-14):

  • A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass.
  • A receiver attempting to catch a forward pass or in position to receive a backward pass, or one who has completed a catch and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier.
  • A kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball, or during the kick or the return.
  • A kick returner attempting to catch or recover a kick, or one who has completed a catch or recovery and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier.
  • A player on the ground.
  • A player obviously out of the play.
  • A player who receives a blind-side block.
  • A ball carrier already in the grasp of an opponent and whose forward progress has been stopped.
  • A quarterback any time after a change of possession.
  • A ball carrier who has obviously given himself up and is sliding feet-first.

Just because helmets touch doesn't make it targeting. Look at the rule. He doesn't launch, lead with his helmet, etc. he led with his shoulder.

Note 1: "Targeting" means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball. Some indicators of targeting include but are not limited to:

Launch—a player leaving his feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make forcible contact in the head or neck area

A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area, even though one or both feet are still on the ground

Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area

Lowering the head before attacking by initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmet

My opinion is it is borderline, but probably 99% of the time gets called targeting. It wasn't a direct helmet to helmet hit though. You can tell Bush was trying to go cross body and his helmet caught the side of Frey's facemask causing it to spin on his head.

Regardless, I think putting somebody back in a game when they may have a concussion is more egregious than what at one time used to be considered a good football play. It isn't like the intent of the hit is to play dirty whereas there is clear intent in risking future health issues for putting somebody back in the game.

It doesn't have to be helmet to helmet to be targeting.

There are TWO targeting rules. This falls under the second.

"initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the ... shoulder."

Targeting and Initiating Contact With the Crown of the Helmet  (Rule 9-1-3)

No player shall target and initiate contact against an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. When in question, it is a foul.

Targeting and Initiating Contact to Head or Neck Area of a Defenseless Player  (Rule 9-1-4)

No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, fist, elbow or shoulder. When in question, it is a foul.  (Rule 2-27-14)

Actually - after looking at the screenshots and video -

1) First contact is with helmets BEFORE shoulders hit.

2) Bush is head down and hits with the helmet just above the face mask - which is the crown of the helmet per rules.

"We want everyone to understand that the crown of the helmet starts from the area above the facemask to the dome of the helmet."

NCAA Football Secretary-Rules Editor Rogers Redding

The image below is hitting with the crown of the helmet per the NCAA:

Yeah. Misguided anger here. The medical staff should have checked him. The hit wasn't dirty or illegal.
Go home, Sparty, stop crying you pansy ass fools. Man do I love reading this shit. It makes me so happy for the players who took care of business.
In a separate note. When you knock out Frey, injure at least 2 QBs, does that mean that you "outhit" them?

Frey is the one that was running his mouth all summer about being "locked in the stadium". Well Chris....I guess that didn't work out too well for you. Maybe next year you will keep your trap shut.
