Funny WSJ article about Michigan from a former Badger
http://www.wsj.com/articles/the-michigan-wolverines-are-back-ugh-147510…
It's paywalled, but not if you google "wall street journal article wolverines are back"

My favorite line: "But you want to know the thing that really makes me nuts? Here’s what Michigan people think about Wisconsin: They don’t think about us at all. The Wolverines have a zillion rivals; a Badger game is nothing to them compared to an Ohio State game, or playing Notre Dame or Sparty or just sitting around talking about how great the Fab Five were."
Worth reading the whole thing... see below for how to use google to get around the paywall.

I think that's a little ridiculous - Wisconsin is not in the group of traditional rivals but yes I consider Wisconsin a worthy Big Ten foe. And I want to beat them. While they're not on the historical level of Ohio State or ND like he said but I put Wisconsin (and to a lesser degree Penn State and Iowa) into that rival category.

It's still paywalled for me. All these other sites just link back to the WSJ page. What is the actual link of the site that works?

Wisconsin graduate feels inadequate in comparison to his Michigan graduate bosses and so he hopes that the Badgers beat the Wolverines to compensate.

I thought this was just some funny sarcasm until I read the article. Nope, thats exactly it. Guy is jealous of his Michigan alum bosses and colleagues. So that's how everyone else feels.... /s

It was as concise a summary as I could come up with.

Also, I could not see a Sparty writing anything close to that.

favorite quote: Wisconsin people still look at Michigan as a Death Star. But Michigan people look at us like we’re someone they met in the grocery store once 10 years ago.
September 28th, 2016 at 10:55 PM ^
Well yes, considering that we seem to play them once every 10 years at home the look is about right.

it's not paywalled if you do the google search for the name of the article and go through it that way.
trust me it's worth the read. really really good and funny article

I know you think my dislike of Michigan is irrational. Of course it’s irrational. What college sports hatred is ever rational?
OK, Duke. It’s rational to hate Duke.
I laughed there. Nice article by someone with some self-aware hate. I did chuckle when he described his situation in the sports department, saying that a good 3/4 of the people in that department are Michigan alums basically.
Like someone said, search it to get the whole article - good read.

Too many ESPN commercials showing Sparty & Rutgers knight making protein shakes in infinite loop mode I guess

The school, campus, Madison, the state, people and culture. It's like Michigan but without our hard edge.
Unfortunately for the article's author Wisconsin is an obstacle in our path. Worse, their football team's offense is exactly the type our defense destroys best.
It's going to be a long and painful game for Wisconsin. And I really feel sorry about that. But Wolverines gonna Wolverine on this Saturday.

Ann Arbor is a very nice city but Madison is nicer.

Those highlighter yellow pants...ugh.
The photo of the 2010 game brought back bad memories of the awful degeneration of maize that was allowed to happen in that era. Conapring that photo to the leade photo of the article makes it clear just how much better the real maize is.

buildings on the lake is pretty cool. Especially the beer garden in the student union with the big patio outside. But I think Michigan has better academic facilities on the whole - newer and more updated.

I'm a lifelong Michigan fan and graduate and I've lived most of my life in greater Cleveland. I have not enjoyed the fan experience over most of the last 15 years, when the football rivalry has been mostly one-sided. But the Buckeye fans still care. Being ignored would be worse, and Gay's article confirms that.
I assume former Michigan Daily writer Darren Everson is going to give him the gears if Michigan wins.

This was a great read Marvin thank you for posting. Pretty much a thesis on why College Football is the best sport in the universe. And to the person who negged the OP you're a dipshit.

Rutgers, Illinois: Doesn't get how insignifigant they are
Indiana, Wisconsin: If anything, they understate their signfigance.
Penn State: Expellenda Est.

I had to read it on my phone since it was consistently pay walled on my office desktop.
So, for those people who haven't been able to access the article, try googling it on your phone.
Entertaining and informative: I had no idea Harbaugh's compensation package inlcuded a Mars rover. ;)

One of WSJ Wolverines he's referring to Deputy Editor in Chief Becky Blumenstein (who was the Daily's editor when I was on staff). Thanks for posting.
