It may be a better world, but only if all cases are treated the same way. If they are not, it just becomes a more arbitrary world, which is what seems to have just happened.

There is an element of fairness and it's nice for a player like Davis, but there are a finite number of scholarships and that means someone else is being left out. Just in terms of education, I don't think those extra years lead to many more graduate degrees. I'd rather see another kid get a good shot at college. Maybe 6th year players who don't earn a masters could impact a school's APR.
On the field, I can't help but feel there's a downside to having even more 5th and 6th year players competing with true freshmen.

A world where student athletes are paid for their services is a better place too, but when only some colleges do it with bagmen without consequence it sets up a competitive advantage issue.

When they undo something monumentally dumb that they did (satellite camp ban reversal).

If campaigning for additional eligibility is effective, I don't understand why you'd be proud of not doing it.

It would be helpful to find out how they pulled it off. I would be interested to know how my rivals run their businesses so I can glean something useful for me.
UofM AD should send some flowers to the MSU AD and invite them for a chat on "How to convince NCAA to grant sixth year eligibility".
Nothing to hate or get angry about. Just trying to know how to run a business. Effectively.

All I take this to mean is that the NCAA interprets rules differently than what is spelled out in their rulebook.
We all assumed it meant exactly as it was typed out. So no, he wouldn't get a 6th. But obviously they kinda just wing it when it comes to rulings. So oh well.
Hopefully the week they play us their library will hand out vouchers for free school supplies.
TL;DR Meh, cool. He gets another year. Good for him. NCAA is still NCAA.

I seem to be in the minority on this, but I really don't care who is on their roster. Just win.

This has been talked about a lot. Is Ed Davis a game changer? Is he even a starter? or is this just a depth issue. If he was denied a 6th year would he have been drafted? I need to know these things before I decide my outrage level.

He is probably their best defensive player not named Malik McDowell. He is returning from a season ending injury though, so we shall see.
My reaction level ranges anywhere between "Meh" to "LOL NCAA"
My outrage stems from the fact that Ojemudia didn't get his.
September 9th, 2016 at 12:28 PM ^
He is older than most NFL rookies. Bottom line, MSU failed this kid. The fact that it took him more than five full years of year round school to graduate should raise some concerns. Remember they start in the summer semester before most freshmen start, making it five years and a semester.
What is more concerning is who convinced him to stay for his sixth year? I mean, clearly someone had to lie about what his contributions were to the scout team in order to get him that sixth year of eligibility. They obviously were going to use it as a woah is me rallying cry if it didn't fail, or get one of their top two defensive players. It was a win win for the program, but a big loss for Ed Davis if it didn't work out.
If only there were a local newspaper willing to dig deeper.

This board's reaction to a kid getting a 6th year is ridiculous and predictable.
Davis has an injury - however minor - early in his freshman year, and he and the coaches agree that he will redshirt. He recovers enough to practice (and practice well) before the end of the year, but they elect not to play him due to medical redshirt status - which does not prohibit practicing (or practicing well) after recovering.
Misses entire 5th year with ACL injury.
Graduates in August, and MSU's "campaign" is to fill out the requisite paperwork for a 6th year.
NCAA reviews facts in a vacuum, without regard for MGoBlueblogboard's strenuous objections.
Meltdown ensues. "who?" "we don't care" "it's not fair" "MSU campaigned" "rules don't apply to MSU" "waaaaaah"
For the few of you who at least appreciate that the kid gets a do-over on a lost 5th year, I commend you. I would hope that a Wolverine player would get the same treatment, if his staff is smart enough to use a medical redshirt for his freshman year.
God bless you all, and good luck this year - not that you need it.

THIS
I also thought there were credit requirements to stay eligible? How does it take you 5+ years to graduate when you are on athletic scholarship?
September 9th, 2016 at 3:43 PM ^
When a freshman gets hurt and you apply for a medical redshirt instead of a regular redshirt, it's neither malpheasance today, nor clairvoyance for a blown ACL 4 years later. It's just smart, and I'd guess that Harbaugh will (and does) do the same.
You all want Harbaugh to do ANYTHING possible for UM to win. I expect that he will and you will laud him for it. God forbid that someone else use NCAA rules (or lack of) to their advantage. Does Jim get that MO all to himself? You all have twice the football staff to help wherever and however possible - including hiring recruits' parents for some creative jobs. Hey, if it's legal...
And so what that it took Davis 5 years to graduate. I imagine that your football program's grad rate - as well as grad in 4 years rate - is no better or worse than MSU's. It took me 4 plus one term because I worked through school. I assume you all graduated in four years flat? C'mon, man.
I came over here for some reaction and analysis - hell I enjoy a little diatribe and debate - but mostly I'm seeing hypocrisy. Ask yourself when looking at Ed Davis: WWHD? (what would Harbaugh do?)

A sparty lecturing people on a Michigan board. That's cute.
That you think Dantonio accomplished this merely by "following the rules" is also cute.
Let the door hit you on the way out. You obviously came here for one reason.
September 9th, 2016 at 5:03 PM ^
Dantonio regular redshirted him his freshman year and because he had to medical last year, is now claiming he redshirted him his freshman year because of injury and that is complete BS. It is actually an NCAA violation if he lied about the injury, which IMO he did. The NCAA is just too stupid to realize it. The kid should have gone pro, but Dantonio talked him into staying for a hopeful sixth year for IMO selfish reasons. Luckily for Davis it was granted. At least that's the way I see it.

September 9th, 2016 at 2:01 PM ^
To be fair, people on this board saying "Who?" or "Who cares?", actually don't know who he is and/or don't care if he got a sixth year because UM is going to kick MSU's ass with or without him.
You are on a UM board, maybe you should comment on a board that cares about MSU players, instead of being surprised by backlash on a board that doesn't.

He was All Big Ten - Honorable Mention as a junior by both the media and coaches. He's a good player and will either start or see significant snaps.

He didn't even apply for the 6th year until a few weeks ago. He took a chance on that rather than on entering a draft after missing the season to injury.

2010 recruiting class. He's a senior LB for Cincinnati this season. He missed a season in JC due to injury, so he could apply for another year too. Could even be a grad transfer to replace Davis.
