I wonder if Houston's 9 spot leap happens ifi they are a part of a power 5 conference. Going from 15 to 6 feels to be a bit much for a week 1 win over a potentially overrated top 3 OU. If OU stumbles down the road, will Houston fall with it, or do you think the pollsters tried to give them enough of a bump to make the playoff if they win out and betting on others stumbling later on...
It seems a bit much to me...

It wasn't until I looked to see who I would rank ahead of Houston that I'm left scratching my head and going, 'huh...' There is a definite drop off in what was on display in week 1 after Houston, so it makes sensei. I wouldn't put Wisconsin and Texas that far up yet. I guess I thought there would be other teams to fill the gap and that Houston would be paired right there with those two.
September 6th, 2016 at 3:12 PM ^
But that's the funny part of all of this debating - what even makes OU a top-25 team? They've played one game and lost by 2 scores to an AAC team.
"But Houston is good!" -- I suppose. Better than Oklahoma.
"Oklahoma was in the playoff last year!" -- K. That was last year. And the year before they went 8-5 and finished unranked. Does that count?
You could say the same for any game. "Clemson stinks! They barely beat Auburn!" And then Auburn runs the table and wins the SEC.
Who knows?

You may be on to something, but remember that these polls do not dictate the CFP rankings directly. Last year Houston was ranked 18th in the AP and coach's polls in week 10, but only 25th in the CFP rankings. Granted, Houston did not have as impressive a win last year as their victory over OU this year, but my point is just that even if Houston makes the top 4 in the AP, the CFP committee could have them significantly lower.

Fair enough, but the two aren't mutually exclusive. I wouldn't dismiss out of hand the thinking that some AP pollsters might be thinking the same thing you are and want to account for that with an extra nudge "to get their point across." Fortunately, there is a lot of football left to play. I am hoping the rest of the year is as entertaining as this last weekend was.

Good work AP. Rewarding what teams have done on the field so far. Wisconsin deserves to be in Top 15 at least after their victory, and Tennessee deserves to go down big time.

Wow, Wisconsin in the top-10? They definitely deserve to be ranked, but inside the top-10? About that.....
But let's look at it this way: if they get by MSU in a couple weeks and we take care of business against UCF, Colorado and PSU, that's going to set up a great top-10 matchup in Ann Arbor. Gameday may very well be on hand, as long as Ole Miss-Alabama isn't that weekend.

Do you think that the playoffs are having an effect on how writers vote? After seeing how fluid the playoff committee has been, it appears maybe it's rubbing off on the AP and they aren't as afraid to make big moves.

#5 in AP poll with a first place vote. Don't hate that (especially since that's one more vote than OSU this week).

Any idea how to tell who put us first?
September 6th, 2016 at 3:51 PM ^
It was Scott Wolf from the LA Daily Times. He voted us preseason #1 as well.

Kind of them, huh? Dovetails nicely with their "overreaction" peice. So much dis.... wait. *shakes head* That's not who we are.
September 6th, 2016 at 3:01 PM ^
Just a small nitpick. Shouldn't Wisconsin and not Texas be the largest rise from NR to #16?
September 6th, 2016 at 3:15 PM ^
I think they count where they were in receiving votes.

AP Poll is far and away the most sane of them all

Doesn't count until the Playoff rankings first start coming, but it's nice to be back in the Top 5 in at least one poll.
Hopefully a beating of UCF by a ton of points will solve the problem

you gives a fuck about some idiots numbers ? Both Oklahoma and ND are now down to having to win every single game just to have any chance for the CFP ... now that is pressure !!

Play well, get the job done, and everything else will fall into place.
September 6th, 2016 at 3:24 PM ^
There are zero top-25 matchups this week. Here's the upsets I can see happening...
- ₁₅ TCU hosting Arkansas
- ₁₆ Iowa hosting Iowa State
- ₁₇ Tennessee vs Virginia Tech (at Bristol)
- ₂₂ Oklahoma State hosting Central Michigan
- ₂₄ Oregon hosting Virginia
Colorado would probably need more help than that to get into the T25.

Could just be me, but I don't think a team should be 17th in the country if a Sun Belt team can take them to overtime while playing at home.

A 15-0 team won't be worried about rankings after week 1. We should concern ourselves with how the team plays, rather than its ranking. Block, tackle, take care of the ball and make plays, and the rest will take care of itself.

Because how we blog makes all the difference to how the team executes on the field.

FYI you can see who votes what in the AP poll:
http://collegepolltracker.com/football/pollsters/2016
Scott Wolf, LA Daily Times voted us #1 as he did preseason. A lot of the ballots right now appear 'incomplete' so I suspect they will gradually update. I'm interested to see where the local and NJ papers ranked us, as well as the southern.
It looks like they fill them in by school on this website because the same schools are missing so far on each ballot in the blanks.
September 6th, 2016 at 4:09 PM ^
The polls are incredibly stupid until at least 4-5 games in. Right now it's just people barely shuffling their preseason expectations.
Anyone who thinks MSU, who was within one score of a terrible FCS team in the fourth quarter, was more impressive than Texas, who beat ND, or Wisconsin, who beat LSU, is nuts.
September 6th, 2016 at 4:25 PM ^
The reality is that these polls are always meaningless now, no matter what week it is. So why not have a poll to help hype the sport and create chatter, it is just good business.
