Buckle Up??

Submitted by AZBlue on

Sorry I am not even going to try to Embed but ---  I have seen 2 tweets this afternoon/evening that lead me to believe we may be on commit watch.

The first was from @claywill3 and said "All I know right now is to stay tuned this week!! this will be huge" with an M Emoji.  I don't know who he is exactly, but apparently he does commitment edits for players and is a M fan, so he may be in the right position to know something.

The second was from BlueVod.  (I know some question his actual "insider" status.)  All his said was "Buckle Up!"

If they are correct it would almost have to be someone at the Opening...and the only buzz we have seen this week has been with Nico Collins.

Any other ideas?  Am I way off base in thinking something good may be coming this weekend?

He seemed to have a legit connection to Hackett which is why he knew about Harbaugh's hiring. He overexaggerated his connection which is why he always talks up recruiting things but never anything confirmable/specific like he did with Harbaugh. Now that Hackett's gone, his middleman connection is gone, supposedly.

Now would be a great time for JKP to pull the trigger. Get the ball rolling, start some positive momentum for all of our targets at The Opening. We seem to be out in front for Collins but he's a smart kid, still has visits to take. I feel pretty good saying no commitment will come from him within the next week. If I'm wrong, I won't eat a lemon. Instead, I'll do some blog banging.

Just looking at our top target on 247 that we have a legit chance this class could be ridiculous.  How many of these top guys will we get especially with the O-line filling up?

DPJ 99     CB65% M

Isaiah Wilson 98  CB 54% M

Tederral Slaton   CB 50% M

Drew Singleton 97     CB 96%M

Nico Collins   96     CB 41% M

Jordan Anthony 94   CB 40% M (leader)

Cesar Ruiz  93    CB 92% M

Ambry Thomas 93   79% M

Side note:  When I was a freshman, we had one of the first O-lines that averaged over 300 pounds.  Can you imagine a line with

Wilson 354

Slaton 340

Ruiz 315

Michael Onwenu 360

(I know that's only 4, but insert the 320 pound tackle of your choice.)

I don't know when you were a freshman, but I'm willing to bet that 300# line was not nearly as athletic as the guys you just listed.  That list is insane when written out, and it doesn't even include Ben Bredenson!

another DT or DB or leave class at 29

brings class to 30

last year's class is 27 now if Hawkins doesn't qualify, with 7 early enrollees classified as 2015's.

Makes 2016 class officially at 20, so 5 EE's to 2016 and 25 to 2017 = 30 in the class

Over at TTB, Magnus said he wants Ruiz as C on the OL, which makes a lot of sense. However, after Ruiz, his preference is Jedric Wills, an OL out of KY.

  • I'm curious about Wills, who I haven't heard much about.
  • And I'm also curious why Magnus prefers Wills over Wilson and Slaton. Is it because he thinks he is a better OL?
  • Or is it because he thinks it is unlikely we get both Wilson and Slaton.
  • And I'm curious about how many guys we can take on the OL. We currently have 4 commits. I'm assuming we couldn't/wouldn't take 4 more (Wills, Wilson, Slaton, Ruiz). At least it is a nice problem to have.

I am really looking forward to improved OL play. I also want to see the DL recruiting stay at a high level. I am a firm believer that the strength of the OL and DL go a long way to predicting the overall success of the team.

Cesar Ruiz just declared Alabama his leader at The Opening this week. Looks like we're not in as good of shape with him as we thought. I know there's still plenty of time, but I was under the impression that we were leading at this point.

even more than QB I thought the new staff would have the best OL in the country knocking down the door. It hasn't really happened yet and we need OL. Last year was a bit of an oddity in that we had a great OL on board only to go to Stanford when admitted (can't blame a kid for that and best to him). Then we all but had another from Texas before he had a family based change of heart at the last second (again, understand and best to him). IIRC, we pulled 3 OL in a sport that demands at least 4 year and the staff is known for rebuilding Stanford with a mauling OL. We prize a tough, trench warfare running attack and it's no secret. Our coach is known to rock goal line formation 60+ yards away from the goal line when he has what he wants in his OL (ha). I know they didn't plan it but we did not have any late pulls from assumed star OL after the hire and we fell a bit short in numbers the last cycle. I really thought the last class would be lined with 5-6 highly rated OL as our numbers are not good. In fact, our 2nd highest rated OL recruit may not even play OL but DT. We may end up with 2-3 OL from the last class so common sense would want to take Ruiz over Collins if we could only have one (I think both go to Bama, btw). Yet, Collins brings things to WR that you can't teach or develop from most lower rated guys. His size, precision and athleticism are rare. Ruiz is a terrific prospect at Center (!) but Center/OL seems to be so hit & miss that he could become a 1st round pick or completely bust and lose the job to a 3 star kid or walk-on that developed. OL is not like QB or any other "boom or bust" position in that many kids can simply add size, muscle and coaching to develop into a solid player on the OL. It's much less true or easy for Tackles but interior lineman just need to push the guy in front of them so it's easier to develop a guy there. That's a gross simplification but I think you may get the gist. Common sense says we have young WRs and so-so numbers at the position, we need OL so take Ruiz but I'd go Collins and then likely wish my QB had the time to get him the ball after my patchwork OL got him sacked for the 7th time (ha).

Steve's Crystal Ball is approaching Sam Webb's Gut in reliability level. However, that is also a negative as I am certain he KNEW about Herbert but couldn't put in a CB without betraying his trust.

PS - for those who have been around here for a while....Emo has reappeared - now at the 247 site under the name KEmo - hasn't changed a bit
