OT: Best new music you have discovered in the last year

Submitted by Blue Baughs on

Judgement free zone here. Just curious what new music everyone here has been listening to, and what about that band do you enjoy.

The only new band ive had any real interest in has been Silversun Pickups. Mostly because i have always had a thing for rock bands that use alot of distortion to create an emotional layer to their music. They arent ground breaking artists or anything, just remind me of listening to older Smashing Pumpkins a little bit.

Now your turn, give me some of your personal new favorites. Hopefully we can all broaden our musical horizons a little bit.

Before The Family Band recorded anything, Robert Randolph was "discovered" in a church choir band by the North Mississippi All Stars and John Medeski of Medeski, Martin & Wood. Their first album is pure awesome. I saw RR&TFB; and he is so much fun to listen to and watch. But I'd LOVE to see The Word.

I've definitely embraced my millenial nature over the past few years.  I really love newer electronic music artists who are really pushing the boundaries and creating sounds and styles that have never been heard before.  My favorite this year is probably this dude Electric Mantis out of Portland.  Super unique sound and production quality.

This is not quite in the last year, but it's close enough.  Also I do believe this will expose me for a huge nerd.  A bit ago, SiriusXM played a song by Blackmore's Night on the Deep Tracks station, which I found I really liked.  A little YouTubing later I decided I needed to buy all the albums.  Blackmore's Night is Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple and Rainbow fame, playing mega-nerdy Ren Faire medieval stuff with his wife who he met over a love and interest in said medieval music.  Some of it's actual really old songs, some of it's original, some of it's covers of things like Joan Baez.  It's really great stuff.

For the Metalheads (and some not so metal)...

For All Eternity

Everything in Slow Motion

Those Who Fear (Heavy...)

Rival Choir

Hope for the Dying

Beartooth

Saving Grace

Tony Danza Tapdance Extravanganza (Will blow minds - technically discovered a few years back and have semi-recently disbanded but so good I couldn't resist. Danza IV is my favorite album of theirs.)

Not metal...

Veridia

Twenty One Pilots

My Epic

Andy Mineo

Truslow

Others... this is all I can think of at the moment.

I wanted to hate Beartooth (and every other band from C-bus) but they are too ridiculous to not like. SO good. Also - I remember the TDTE from back in the day - haven't heard that name in years. That was back when I was into the Number 12 Looks Like You, Fear Before The March of Flames, and See You Next Tuesday.

Matthew Mayfield (genre self-described as 'acoustic sad bastard music')

Chris DuPont (he's from Ypsi!; more of a folk-rocker)

I don't know why it took me like 10 years to finally get it, but now that it's like 20 years old, I don't know that I could recommend an album more highly than Chamberlain's The Moon My Saddle.

I'll leave it there so I don't get too long.  The Moon My Saddle, people.

A few I've been getting into are Deslondes (the Sam Doores album too), Woods, Dr. Dog, Edward Sharpe, Paolo Nutini, The Wood Brothers, Blitzen Trapper, Josh Garrels, The New Basement Tapes, and The Devil Makes Three.

Run the Jewels. Finally new hip hop I can get behind. It's been so long since something with this kind of sound and message has come around in hip hop. Very welcome and long overdue, as far as I'm concerned.

Also Odesza (been a little over a year that I've been listening to them, but still worth mentioning), Big Grams and Spark Master Tape.

Heard about Crobot first through Rocksmith.  I hope they make a trip through Upstate NY in the near future so I get a chance to see them live.

I thought about putting Volbeat on the list, but that doesn't meet the OP's criteria of 'in the last year'.  I found out about them 4 years ago, another fantastic band.

I'm always on the lookout for current music. I love just about everything 60's-current, but most of my music collection is 70's-90's.  I listen to XM Sirius or the modern music channels trying to find new groups, but I probably have the best luck with the satellite radio.  When I'm out driving around, I'll shazam songs I like so I have a record of them to DL later.  Anyway, here's some stuff that I've found in the last year that is no more than 4yrs old.

July Talk - Summer Dress

Lissie - When I'm Alone

Glass Animals - Gooey

In The Valley Below - Peaches

M83 - Midnight City

Placebo - Pure Morning

Royal Blood - Figure It Out

Tweak Bird - Lights In Lines

Ex Cops - Black Soap

Here's some really new stuff most of you haven't heard of yet.

Magic Giant - they are like Imagine Dragons meets Mumford and Sons - crazy live show. These guys could be massive in 2017: https://youtu.be/58uOrEengf8

RY X - Like James Blake on a guitar without the dubstep/bass elements. Just dropped a live video this week. really beautiful: https://youtu.be/usASOlhYdHQ

Here's some other newer stuff to check out if you haven't yet. Mostly indie/pop/rock

Dilly Dally - amazing indie rock band from Toronto - reminds me of the rawness of Hole but so much more likable. So good.

Sara Jarosz - like a female Jose Gonzales. Really impressive and haunting at times. New album just dropped last week.

The Record Company - dirty rock and blues. If you like Black Keys, you needs these guys in your life.

Sofi Tukker - one of the best tracks of 2015: https://youtu.be/6S4ToE8oGVw

Massive Attack - New EP came out this year! Older folks on this board will really appreciate this! No joke.

Actually - here's a Spotify playlist I made of about 20 of my favorite tracks that came out this year that you might want to check out if you like new indie music. I put some tracks up by Mr. Oizo, Suuns, DMAs, Pumarosa, Yak, My Jerusalem to name a few. Also - new Ladyhawke album just came out and I can't stop listening. I need to update this list and add to it - but some killer tracks here:

I've been listening to Gel Set for a couple years now, but within the last year I've been impressed with her collaboration with Matchess, called Simulation.  These are non-glo stick electronic acts.

Hide has a striking live act.  Electronic, but heavier.

White Mystery (indie/garage), but they've been on my radar for a couple years now.

Deep Sea Diver's new album is great.

Its been a tad over a year, but I really like London Grammar.

Not much outside of that. I have a friend who is obsessed with Lake Street Drive, but their album was so over-produced I couldn't get a good read on them.

Discovered the Avett Brothers last year after hearing a song on the radio.  I bought the album followed two days later by ALL their albums.  Saw them at Hill Auditorium in November and loved the show.  My wife and I are going to Red Rocks to see them in July.  Their new album True Sadness drops tomorrow.

This is the band that Mumford and Sons listened to for a solid year before writing and releasing Sigh No More.

I'm late to the party but here are a couple newer bands I'm listening to. Lewis Del Mar, The Suffers, and Little Scream. They've been around a bit now but for someone my age, Parquet Courts and their alter ego Parkay Quartz are new.

Well, I usually just hang in the wings around here but this seems like a fitting thread for me to jump into since I have an unhealthy obsession when it comes to music.

Here is my ever growing playlist of tracks I have been diggin for 2016. I do this every year, drop in tunes whenever one catches my ear. Helps me not to forget some gems I stumpled across. There is no running genre, it goes all over the map.

It's been a few years, but the one that stands out is Sturgill Simpson. Favorite album of 2014, and it is looking like his new one this year will top that list again. Classic country voice, but I wouldn't label him as pure country. he more resembelled Otis Redding performing his new album on this last tour.
