OT - Your All-Time Favorite Movie is.....?

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

I haven't been to a movie in years and can't tell you the last one I did see in a theatre. However, oldest son asked me to take him to see 'Captain America - Civil War' as a birthday gift since his birthday was last week and we just got back.  He enjoyed it so I'm glad, but I must admit that I'm too old to really enjoy those types of films much, but also that they did have a few good one-liners mixed in toward the end of the flick.

I am adding a link here to the highest box office grossing films, which was a discussion we had on the way home.  I was surprised to see how many titles that I had neither seen nor heard of :  http://www.the-numbers.com/movie/records/All-Time-Worldwide-Box-Office

So, with a nod to the Monday thread about favorite war movies, what are the Mgobloggers all-time favorite movies?

EDIT:  Should've done it by decade.  Just looking at the 80's you have a boatload of classics: Lethal Weapon, Beverly Hills Cop, Top Gun, Caddyshack, Field of Dreams, and on...

Have a great weekend,  Looks like Lake Michigan is warm enough to swim in, so might try that tomorrow with the sons.

Way way too many to list. Older films that come to mind are The Replacements, Last of the Mohicans, Apocalypse Now, Braveheart, The Natural, Grosse Point Blank, Up The Creek, Caddyshack, Animal House. Newer would be Deadpool and the Hateful Eight.

Loving this thread, because it's equal parts "Man, I've got to watch that" and "Holy crap the people here have no taste."
.
.
That said, my contributions: The Graduate, Holy Grail, When Harry Met Sally, In the Name of the Father, Shawshank, A Perfect World, Serenity.

told him to look away during the torture scene (which is pretty short, maybe a minute or two), and thankfully i'd brought a sport section with me so he could read that while it happened.  there is language that isn't appropriate, especially for a 5 yr old, and boatloads of violence.  the violence was fine for us older types, but i personally don't think it's a great thing for a 5 yr old.  i wouldn't take any of my younger children to it, that's for sure.

one other thing:  there were 25 MINUTES of previews before the actual film.  that was ridiculous and i wish i'd known ahead of time b/c i could've put that 25 minutes to use doing something productive.  is it normal to have so much b.s. before the actual film these days?

I dont have a favorite since there are so many but the ones off of the top of my head that I frequently go back to and watch are Big Lebowski, Salton Sea (hard to find but if you can find it, watch it at least once), Shawshank, the Goonies, and the 'Burbs.

I have been on a mission recently to find movies on Netflix that are diamonds in the rough , which have resulted in finding some pretty good indies; Time Lapse (twist is crazy), Pontypool (zombie film shot via a radio hosts perspective which makes it unique), the Imposter (documentary, dont want to give too much away but its nuts), and the Snowtown Murders (based on true story, very dark).

If anyone has any indies that can be found on Netflix, I would love some suggestions myself.

"All-time favorite" is quite different from what I'd consider the "best." Some of the "best" films I've seen I really don't have any desire to ever see again. But if I'm choosing an all-time favorite, for me, that would be asking what are the films that I can watch over and over again and never get sick of.

So, using that criteria, these would be my top 5. NOT in any particular order!

  • Goodfellas
  • Time Bandits
  • The Goonies
  • The Blues Brothers
  • The Big Lebowski

Honorable mentions:

  • Caddyshack
  • Animal House
  • It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
  • The Empire Strikes Back
  • The Silence of the Lambs

I think there has to be a few people that responded that this would apply to, although I don't know if it is Favorite of anyone and it's possible those holding Fast Times highly favorable that responded listed just favorite instead of top five, like so many others, including myself, did.

I thoroughlyh enjoyed the movie and although I'm not a predictor of acting talent, it was apparent Penn did a hell of a job with his character, in fact, pretty much making the movie. Don't think too many could have predicted the greatness that would follow. With that said, it does not crack my top five.
