Winter Deathstorm: Deathnight

Submitted by 1464 on
How's everyone holding up? I'm on the outskirts of Columbus, OH and it seems like our entire city is without power. What's weird is the weather isn't even bad, but the Ohio power grid is popping like an old string of Christmas lights, I guess. Knowing the natives, should I be concerned about some sort of purge?

here in SW Michigan.

Still snowing, but not nearly as hard as it was between 2-5 pm.  Right now, the biggest problem is the howling wind, as it's blowing at 29 MPH with gusts to 41.  Knock on wood, but I still have power, although it flickered a few times during the Michigan basketball game earlier this past evening.

I was visiting a client today down in Long Beach (the nice part of it) and got on a conference call with some of the people from the Troy, MI headquarters.

As I sat near the beach, enjoying the ocean breeze on a cloud-free, perfectly sunny 75 degree day... I heard them describe the latest Michigan ice storm that they were going to drive through to try to get home this evening.  I then reminded myself of one of the reasons why I moved out here.

So, I wish you all pleasant thoughts of bikin-clad girls on a So Cal sunny beach to warm up your nights tonight.

PS: You have to admit....snow and cold can be great fun to live in, just not every day.

Former SoCal denizen, I must ask whether the municipal water piped home still makes you break out in zits. Because it did and I suspect apart from San Diego the water issue has only worsened in terms of quality. And then there is the whole "it feels like the turd world" transient culture over there that has your neighbors raising livestock in their yards and at the local playground.

Nothing major, just a little snow. Everyone acts like it's the storm of the century. Schools calling off way before the storm started yesterday. Of course the commute is gonna be slow. Not that long ago when I was in high school 8" to 12" of snow was fine to go to school. If we would have more than 12" inches of snow, the worst part was getting out of your driveway and then it was fine. I guess we are afraid to offend the snow. Safe travels for everyone and go blue!

I work for the county, they shut down yesterday at noon and called off today. So sleeping in would've been a thing had it not been for the neighbors letting their dogs out to bark at 5:30 this morning.

I was in SD last week. SOOOOO glad to be home. Between everything being dead from no rain, the hobo fights, and the fall-down drunk dudes dragging their transvestite girlfriends into the ice cream shop just to yell indecipherably at everyone, I couldn't be happier in 8 inches of snow.

I'm in flint. Also hammered. The wife and I called in to work. About to throw the ole' carhartt's on and battle the elements to shovel. Stay safe my friends....

And that was some of the heaviest snow I've ever had to move. Easily 20 lbs per shovel full. There's probably another couple inches by now, but I'm not dealing with it until later. Roads seem ok, but I'm working from home today anyway. People at work will call me a pussy tomorrow for staying home, but that's a small price to pay for being able to work in a bath robe. Work breaks today will consist of taking a long bath, going sledding, and other recreational activities with Mrs. Hatter.

Reporting in from Fort Wayne, IN. While mostly everyone west and north of us were getting hammered by snow yesterday, we only got rain. It wasn't until last night that snow started to fall. I would say we have between 1-2 inches on the ground. What a letdown. Was hoping for more snow.

The outlook from the southern reaches of Wayne County here in Michigan -

 - probably about 3 inches here in the Romulus / Belleville area, with the bottom two essentially being hard slush. Expecting another inch or two of fluffy snow. Still a hell and a half to clear out.

- roads are very hit and miss. Eureka Road was mostly OK with just minor icing and slush, but I managed to get a Jeep - a fucking Jeep - stuck on my own street, at least for a minute. Freeways were at about 75% of normal speed.

- the wind will not help today certainly. Be careful if you're out there clearing snow as it will be blowing around in spots. We're actually already in storm mode, although many of the outages right now are in the thumb and out near Port Huron.
