and he will be first on that list! I did not realize that. Very cool.

Two years? He should do it next year.

Good stuff, but he's also #1 in losses. Just sayin.

He also took over a program that was in the gutter and turned it around. I give him more credit than Fisher, who was basically handed the keys to a top notch program.

Coach Beilein was that close to the all-time lead in wins.
Even more surprising, Brian Ellerbee leads the second ten.

Thrilled for Beilein, thrilled for Michigan. I am happier with Beilein than with any coach since Orr. With a little bit of luck in recruiting, and better health on the team, we could still see several awesome seasons in coming years.

That's even misleading. He went 25-9 as interim coach and then 37-51 as permanent coach.

Only 3 coaches ever with losing records. Not bad for 110 years of basketball.

Steve Fisher had some pretty good teams - shame he didn't win a championship (even if it would have been erased due to a certain individual's selfishness). But I have to say that I really enjoy the science behind Beilein's strategy (three points are more than two points). Now if we could only close on a couple of top recruits without needing a bagman... But I suppose that is wishful thinking.

Um, Fish did win a championship.

Don't know if this is thread-worthy, but for anyone who cares, Justice Scalia has died.

Also in the news today is that Izzo is a finalist for the Hall of Fame. I think his win total is 515 as a head coach. Then I googled Beilein's and found out that his win total as a head coach is 736 or something close to that (including his junior college record). 221 more wins than Izzo. Beilein has 642 in Division 1 (I think that excludes this season's wins).

John Beilein actually passed Steve Fisher with win #110, which would have been sometime in 2012-3, but OK.

The third winningest coach in program history and people want him fired. I hope he retires blue.

I can't wait until he takes the overall spot. A great man and representative of our university. And though some other coaches may have more dominant tenures, Coach Beilein deserves all the accolades he gets.

Number 1 on the list is not far away.
Thanks for posting.

I'm suprised how high up the list Tommy Amaker is. It didn't seem like he was here that long, or had that many wins.
February 13th, 2016 at 6:49 PM ^
1. With the addition of the Big Ten Tournament and more nonconference tournaments, the regular season is longer than it used to be.
2. Amaker's teams tended to play really weak nonconference schedules and rack up the wins.
3. Amaker's teams made a couple of long runs in the NIT, winning it in 2004 (giving him five more wins) and reaching the finals (four wins) in 2006.
He's sixth in total wins, but only 10th in winning percentage.

The thing that jumps out at me is how low the school record is (209 wins), even though we've had a pretty good program over the years (seven Final Fours since 1964). For one reason or another we've never had that Yost/Crisler/Schembechler demigod figure coaching the basketball team.
Dave Strack could have been that guy; he won three straight Big Ten titles and went to two Final Fours. But then he decided to leave coaching in the prime of his career.
Orr had the longest tenure of any coach and had some great teams. But then he left for Iowa State (!) for more money - ouch.
Frieder, well, we know his story. Ditto Fisher.
Beilein can retire with pretty much all the school records, provided he can keep things going okay.
