Beilein: Caris NOT cleared, tells reporters to "back off"

Submitted by MGoAndy on

Beilein on LeVert: "I want to be clear about something with Caris. Nothing is clear."

Beilein says LeVert will get out there when he's ready, "I need everybody to back off, stop projecting. Thank you."

Seriously, what the hell is going on? He was cleared, now he's not? How do we just know absolutely nothing about this injury?

Beilein gets paid millions of dollars to coach this team, and he needs to be accountable to the media when our star player is out for weeks with a mysterious injury.

You're throwing around the words "need" and "obligated" pretty losely.  Outside of legal obligations and survival needs, everything can be described as something people want.

UM isn't obligated to have a football team, but I bet you would feel pretty screwed if they shut it down tomorrow.  Really, your argument is about whether certain desires of the fanbase are justifiable, not wheter Beilein is obligated to provide them.

I'm sure you would like to know more information.  But nobody is under any obligation to give it to you or anyone else.  And while you apparently draw the line at knowing the nature of the injury, others would say they'd just like to see his rehab schedule, or an x-ray of his leg, or a clip from the practice when he last played.  It's a sliding-scale argument (which I hate making, since I find those types of arguments reductive after a while), but it's true to an extent.  You can't always get the information you want for a variety of reasons, and sometimes "because it's none of your business" is probably enough, especially when it comes to someone's medical situaiton.

I think people would like a little more clarity from Beilein regarding this issue.  Because so far he has been anything but clear and has even been contradictory.  I don't know why people take that as the crime of the century or a sign that you're a bad fan, but whatever.  I'm finding I don't get a lot of fans on here I guess.

I'm sure that any potential NBA suitors have dug into the nature of the injury and know all the information anyways, so I don't see why a little bit more clarity would hurt Caris in any way.  If it could, then yes it's best not to but IMO it wouldn't.  But apparently I've offended the entire Michigan fanbase with my opinion so I apologize for that.

You are arguing degrees of information.  UM has reported Caris is dealing with an injury to his lower body.  He is cleared to return medically but he has to feel comfortable about it.  That seems pretty specific to me.  But apparently people want to see the x-rays and poke him in the knee while asking why he isn't showing enough heart to play and if he's protecting his NBA future.

Journalism is all about finding the truth and reporting it as best as possible, but there's a line you can draw between newsworthy information and just digging in because it'll score my cicks and satiate a bunch of anonymous people on the internet who want to know why the kid who plays for the school they root for won't play because it means their school's team might lose more games and that, somehow, reflects poorly on them.

No one is stopping you from wondering what is going on. No one is stopping you from wanting recruiting information. If the program believes leaking or giving that information helps them and the program, then I'm all for following along and reading it. And that's why you get a ton of information about Michigan sports programs.

The fact that injury information doesn't help them win games means that often times they don't devulge that information, and because of that, the fans aren't on a need to know basis.

and I have no evidence to prove this just my thoughts wondering...I think Caris regrets his decision to not go to NBA.  Team is somewhat struggling this year, he is getting hurt and he knows that window of opportunity is very small.  Might be causing some tension possibly?

Again, just my little ol opinion

but I think its time to move on from him...This season is about over...we may eek into the tourney but if we dont beat Purdue or Iowa AT HOME then theres little chance...Caris hasnt really played all that much in his career hes been injured  alot but its a big loss to the team.. Ive always thought he was good but not great and weve played ALOT of games wihout him so we SHOULD be past that but we dont sem to be..The next man  up hasnt really stepped up ..

agree.  I said something similar to this in a post a couple weeks back. He is a great/terrific player when we have that #1 go to guy to play with him who can easily make their own space with dribble drives and dishes...he will kill any team there.  But my eyes just dont tell me he is the type of player to take over a game and create something out of nothing.  Love the guy and I wish him all the best in the NBA but seems like the writing is on the wall.

I don't think a player has to disclose his injury to the media, at least in college.  If he doesn't want to talk about it, so be it.  I do think Beilein and Lavert don't seem to be on the same page fully, which seems to be at the root of this issue.  But I can also see why a guy who has basically lost 2 seasons to injuries isn't excited to talk about it any more to the various media types who follow the team.  Beilein saying it is Caris's decision when to come back, though, didn't help.

saying publically that Caris was cleared and that the decision to play was on Caris.  That may have been true but it kind of set Caris up for criticism (ala Derrick Rose with the Bulls a couple years ago).

I get that JB is probably frustrated that he does not have Caris available and that he keeps getting questions about it, but he probably should have just stuck with the answer that he was not going to be on the floor until he was "ready" or something similarly vague.

What is Caris doing here? All speculation is that he's being soft and only cares about his draft status.

I got news for you Caris. You will be out of the NBA 3 years after being drafted. You aren't very good and being soft is not how you earn the respect of coaches and GMs that played through actual pain in lives. Also, fans don't like soft players.

A coach doesn't own the media detailed injury info. If you want to be pissed at JB, then be pissed at him for saying "Caris is cleared; it's up to him," and then saying "I just to be clear that Caris is clearly not cleared to clear the standards for being cleared to clear the decks of this ship of we call basketball... So back off." He should've just kept quiet the whole damn time. But he doesn't owe anyone an answer.

A word to the wise. Beilein is paid to coach the team, a part of
which is dealing with the media. He is absolutely within his right to keep repeating the "when Caris can play, he'll be out there" line. The minute he said Caris was cleared, that's it. You don't get to take things back just because you regret saying them.

Back off?

No. You said he was cleared and it was up to him. Now, you're saying something different. It's your job to explain what changed. If he had a setback. Fine. Say that. If he doesn't want to play, say he's been cleared but needs to practice more to get up to game speed. But people get paid to cover the team. Fans pay for tickets and gear. You're asking people to NOT do their jobs.

I love being "paid" in a non-transferrable currency. It's why the barter system is still the primary means of exchange across the globe. It's even better because the addition of me (i.e., one single student) to any individual class costs the bosses absolutely nothing.

To top it all off, it's fantastic when the arguments made by the NCAA, Big Ten, and every other collegiate governing body is that I am NOT an employee. I am a student athlete, who as none of the rights or expectations of an employee.

I suppose you also feel that being a 'a fan' means he needs to share his exact game plan they've put together for their upcoming game?

In fact why not also demand he tells all of the out-of-bounds sideline plays that they will be running tomorrow as well. This is too funny.
