You're kidding right? His average stat line before the injury was 17Pts/5Ast/5Rebs. He's one of the few players on our team who can create his own shot without the ball screen and get to the bucket. We don't score 70 against Illinois and win there without Caris
February 9th, 2016 at 4:38 PM ^
with him on the floor, there's another target for the defenders to focus on which should get Robinson some better looks again so he can get back on track with his shot.
February 9th, 2016 at 5:04 PM ^
I think this will be the biggest upside.
February 9th, 2016 at 5:59 PM ^
I don't think it's a coincedence that Robinson's shooting has dropped with Caris out of the line up. With Caris in the oppenent's top defender has to focus on Caris, leaving a shorter or less athletic player to cover Robinson.
There will also be less pressure on Robinson to create his own shots and can focus on being "just a shooter."

Apples to Oranges. If you're gonna hold UConn and Xavier against Beilein when the team was still finding itself in freaking November, maybe you should just not follow CBB in general

His call as in... wait for NBA combine?

Caris needs to play in order to boost his draft position. Others know better than I do, but I would guess at this moment, Caris is mid-late 1st rounder. At some points during his career, I thought he could be a late lottery pick in the mold of Tayshaun Prince. But, if he's going to get there, he needs to show more than just tantalizing promise.

I agree, but late NBA 1st rounders is all about potential and Caris is a toolsy player which NBA types love nowadays. Fills up the stat sheet, can play multiple positions, good for matchups, etc.

(virtually) every draft board still has him going in Round 1--usually top 20--even with legitimate injury concerns. Playing can only help Caris's stock IMHO.

Well, crap.

NCAAs can be a bit like MLB playoffs. Tougher to get into than some tourneys, but once you get in anything can happen. Just. get. in.
February 9th, 2016 at 4:52 PM ^
68 teams make it. It's really not that hard to get in
February 9th, 2016 at 5:02 PM ^
There are 350 Division 1 mens basketball teams, which means fewer than 20% of teams make it.
Sure, it's more like a 50% shot for B1G teams, but it's still not a cakewalk.

if you're a mid major.
If you're in a P5 conference, you pretty much need to finish 500 or better in conference play and you're in the conversation. If you have a solid non-conference resume and finsih 500 or better in conference play, you're probably going to make it. If you have a good basketball program and are in a P5 conference you should be making the tourney are a fairly consistent basis.

Ugh. This could have come a week sooner...
February 9th, 2016 at 4:19 PM ^
Don't think that would have made a difference.

I'd prefer to save it for "Caris returns from injury causing us to beat a good team" muppets.
February 9th, 2016 at 4:24 PM ^
But if you just read the headline it's easy to say Caris "isn't a team player" or whatever else people want to spew. Him and Coach B are on the same page as far as expectations and recovery. Caris will return when he's able, and I don't think it has anything relation to his desire to help this team win.

but if he has already made up his mind and he is shutting it down to avoid re-injury due to pro prospects, he should really do it sooner rather than later. I think he should see "how much he can do" for about another week, but after that if the answer is "not enough" he should just go the street clothes route and let it be. His "may or may not return" is turning into something of a distraction and I think it is having an effect on the play of the team that is playing.

This is great news but I doubt he plays tomorrow against Minnessota. February 13th against Purdue would be my guess and at the perfect time down the stretch of the season.

With his return we are looking at .500 at best so about 11 losses.
We will get in with 11 losses. There were at lot of 12 and 13 loss teams last year.
February 9th, 2016 at 5:13 PM ^
This. And let's say Caris is a really big boost and we finish something like 5-4 (10 losses regular season plus 1-1 in the BTT). Both Iowa and Michigan State were 7-seeds with 11 losses last year. I'll start panicking about the tournament if we gag one up at Minnesota tomorrow.
February 9th, 2016 at 4:54 PM ^
"He just pushes himself a little more each day and now we're up to an hour," Beilein said.
The hope, I would think, is that he is able to add a bit more each day and go from there. I would be skeptical that he contirbutes much if at all at Minnesota but as we move down the final stretch here, it would be great to see him gradually get back into games. I would much rather Caris play as much as he believes he can safely play honestly, that seems more sensible to me than throwing him right back out there.
February 9th, 2016 at 4:55 PM ^
A week too late? Did I miss the NCAA tourney? Honestly you basketball debbie downers are unbearable. Caris is exactly the type of player who can keep the offense from going into slumps. I'd love for the team to end the year with a run just so the Beilein haters would find something else to bitch about.
February 9th, 2016 at 5:29 PM ^
Agree completely. The difference between staying in a game and getting blown out is having a guy who can create and make shots when the team is slumping. Hopefully Caris can be that guy (like Tre was). Hopefully...
