he's playing the (1) "spring break belongs to the students" card as opposed to the (2) "U-M shouldn't be holding practices at IMG because it is a method for them to possibly build relationships with the IMG football players and coaches" card.

We all know, of course, that Sankey's motivation is the latter as opposed to the former.

Hmmmmmmm.  Reading between the lines, there are some SEC coaches (who are better geographically-positioned vs. B1G schools) who would like to practice at IMG too.

I see why they SEC would be against it. I fail to see the NCAA prohibiting it. As far as I understand, football teams are alotted 15 days of practice in the spring. Traditionally, these practices are held on campus. Harbaugh is simply moving 5 practices off campus. He's not holding an additional week of practice, so what's the problem?

Keeps Harbaugh and Michigan in the news, reinforces with recruits that Michigan has come up with a cool spring break/spring practice idea, and continues to show that Michigan is a forward-thinkig program where it is fun to play.  Keep whining, guys!

The SEC can practice anywhere on earth and U of M can practice anywhere but not in the southeast......If they were smart they would come up here and practice in Ohio and steal some B1G kids if they can.........BUT that sentence started with; If they were smart.....

Have teams take spring break trips to practice and/or compete. (See softball/baseball for example). I went on spring break track trips to Clemson. It was fun.

I'm not sure how having the spring practices occurring during school is better??

Northern baseball teams have to play 4-5 weeks of what are essentially road games due to weather. This forces them to travel south I winter, yet southern teams have no problem with that. Also, I rowed in college, and we went to Oak Ridge, TN and Jacksonville for spring training, but, again, not s problem. This is fucking weak.

Funny how that article never mentions one of the benefits for the Michigan student-athletes: no football during finals.

"Everybody's going to get a spring break," he said. "There won't be a youngster who can't afford to fly somewhere and not enjoy a spring break.

"What better way to be doing that than playing football?"

Harbaugh also said that by practicing during Michigan's spring break, both winter finals weeks this semester will feature zero football -- allowing players to focus solely on their exams.

"Those will be discretionary weeks so our guys can focus and concentrate on finals," he said. "Then, we'll be outside, we'll be in Florida, we'll go to the beach. It'll be a good time for the team to connect and be together.

"That's a lot of levels right there ... very much looking forward to it."

MLive article.

What Harbaugh's planning seems similar to the foreign trips that the NCAA allows basketball teams to take (but only every four years). Those are great opportunities for team bonding.

"Dear esteemed coaches of the Southeastern Conference,

We welcome you to take a week to visit and explore the wonderful town of Ann Arbor, Michigan in February and March by holding your Spring practices at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor. Bring a jacket.

Yours in football,

Jim Harbaugh."

Honestly I am really disappointed with the rest of the Big Ten and the Jim Delany. The SEC is showing their strength in joining together. Their commissioner is out in front and all 14 teams are supporting him. Where is our commissioner and where is the rest of the SEC? If Nick Saban and Gus Malzhan can agree on this, and many other issues, than Urban Meyer who wants to do these camps as well should be out supporting this. Michigan is fighting this all alone and it will make it that much tougher to win. The Big Ten needs to be working with the Big 12 and Pac-10 to fight against the SEC and ACC.

Now if the Big Ten is in this fight alone that is one thing but I think Michigan is in this fight alone and it is very disappointing.

SEC should have their spring break in Traverse City. While they are at, we should have all the bowl games in East Coast and Mid West. That is only fair. Right?

This is truly fascinating. The SEC is rightfully concerned, and trying to protect their "home territory." IMG Academy is home to 11 of the ESPN 300, 8 of the ESPN 150, and one Dylan Moses.

Harbaugh has effectively targeted these magnet schools (i.e. Paramus Catholic) for recruiting, and it's going to pay big dividends. It's beneficial for the high schools too. These programs will ride the coattails of Harbaugh's player (and man) development. By relation, they will also be known for forming respectable men with an NFL pedigree.

SEC Logic:

- 1860's: We need to keep slavery. It's important for our economy.

- 1960's: Segregation is necessary.

- 2016: We do not want to compete with Jim Harbaugh.  Ban him.

Harbaugh is a genius. 2 days after superbowl EVERYONE is talking about Michigan. Finebaum discussed it heavily on his radio show today and went to bat for harbaugh with callers. Just now here in Birmingham they discussed it on the local news and will later tonight on the local news. Love it with all the bammers and aubies getting their panties in a wad.

They'll find a way to block it, but Harbaugh will just find another way to get his name out there and get the attention of elite recruits.

At this point, I'd just hope the NCAA allowed more transparent uses of money by teams and schools, because a whole bunch of SEC teams are putting up tents outside places like IMG all year round but get pissy because UM has enough money to fly down and practice there for a week.  I'm not saying UM should start buying recruits, but if you aren't going to stop the Ole Miss's of the world (and I know the report came out today about violations, but I'll believe the hammer coming down when I see it) from doing what they do, at least let UM exercise their financial advantages above-board.

"these kids need time off" and then two breaths later says, " but if it is OK, we're going to do it twice as good as you".

If they need time off, go back to a 10 or 11 game schedule.  Drop the cream puffs that the presidents added only for dollars.
