Today's Steve Wiltfong crystal ball picks
It is late and I figured there are others roaming the board when they should be sleeping/working.
This is not your typical crystal ball thread. Steve Lorenz recently pointed out that Steve Wiltfong (lead writer at 247) is a ballz picker (lol) whose predictions fans should pay attention to. He has many connections in the recruiting circuit, and he also has reason due to employment to only make predictions when he has legit info. He is also the most accurate active predictor on 247's site from what I can gather.
Today he put in crystal ball picks to Michigan for both Chase Allen (3* TE from Missouri) and Donald Stewart (3* WR from New Jersey, who is Rashan Gary's teammate). Allen visits Ann Arbor on January 15, and Stewart visits on January 22.

I think these developments lend credence to the idea that multiple guys who are currently in the class will not be signing a LOI to Michigan.
Also, I suspect some of these wide receivers will follow Brian Cole's path and end up on defense.

York is gone obviously, Dukes and Jones...
I think I saw Jones in a game once this year....

we need as many receivers as we can get. We do not need to end up with a bare cupboard when Chesson and Darboh graduate. We are stocked up on QB's so we also need to be with WR's.

Are crystal balls saying the kid ends up at a certain school, or just that the kid is leaning towards a certain school. I can see some of these being the Dennis Norfleet, last second deals to fill a spot if we have a signing day battle not go our way.

Stewart's had one for a looong time.

We've already got commits from Crawford, Johnson, Mitchell, and Hawkins, and given our needs at other positions, it seems like overkill to get a fifth receiver. The only obvious reason to me would be that the coaches are thinking one or more of these guys (aside from Mitchell) is not going to end up in the class.

I can't recall where i saw it but Hawkins and Mitchell are candidates to make the switch to safety at the next level.

That's probably why Mitchell got the #2.

idea seems to be that most of the guys will have the skill/ability to play multiple positions. Add in that our last few WR's classes have really not developed like expected. After next year our primary WR's, besides the 2016 class, will be Harris, Ways, and Dukes. None of those guys have really shown anything on the field so far.
January 11th, 2016 at 12:02 PM ^
Perry is ahead of all those guys. Not to mention Peppers.

Or perhaps that some of these guys end up in different positions. Harbaugh sees athletes. Richard Sherman was a WR recruit who ended up doing pretty well on the other side of the ball.

well before Asiasi agreed to visit. You think the staff should cancel them because a longshot they might like better is maybe going to visit?

I'm not sure the staff "really wants" Pie at this point, or I'd imagine he'd already be in the class.
January 11th, 2016 at 9:26 AM ^
My guess is that the staff has been recruiting Donald Stewart over Pie Young to solidify our position with Rashan Gary. From what I've seen, I like Young a lot, but doing whatever it takes to get Gary is a no-brainer.

He is only 205 now, but perhaps they consider him a possible a tight end project
January 11th, 2016 at 1:24 PM ^
I don't think that's the case. He would be a big project to move to TE.
January 11th, 2016 at 12:17 PM ^
Seems it hardly ever has an impact when all is said and done. I hope and expect we're offering him because our staff feels he will be a better player than the alternatives. Period.
January 11th, 2016 at 1:25 PM ^
Stewart was offered a long time ago.
January 11th, 2016 at 1:38 PM ^
Wanting to pursuade other recruits is generally not a good strategy for preferring one player over another. Sure, if that's what it took to land Gary, I could be pursuaded that this is an exception, but there's about a 99% chance that where Stewart goes will not change what Gary chooses.

will visit USC after a week after M. USC is probably the favorite.
Allen is not a slam dunk either since we haven't been recruiting him for that long.
January 11th, 2016 at 1:47 AM ^
We haven't recruited Allen for a that long, but the same goes with almost every other team that has offered him.
According to 247sports his first offer was Nov 19, Michigan offered him on Dec 14th. Earliest mention I see is him taking an unofficial to Nebraska in Sep. and even they were late (Jan 2) to extend an offer to him.
January 11th, 2016 at 1:50 AM ^
Asiasi could also end up at DE. The guy hits about as hard as anyone in this entire class (both on offense and defense).
Besides, he probably won't end up at Michigan. The staff knows that.
