Scott Shafer to Terps as DC. Looks like Durkin scooped him up

Ex-Syracuse coach Scott Shafer is the new defensive coordinator for Terrapins coach D.J. Durkin per source.

There's a part of me that wouldn't mind just sitting through one more diatribe on pad level, just for old time's sake, and then smirk at some surreal answers given in total seriousness by Marinelli. Of course, there's also the part of me that remembers how his time here in Detroit went, but I was able to chuckle at the suggestion at this distance now.

what we need is a bunch of d lineman and linebackers that can rip the doors off a tank, and a coordinator smart enough to not over think it. that was a very ill prepared and overmatched defense against osu.

Harbaugh can recommend him, so it makes sense Durkin would hire him. But it also means Jim didn't want him here, or he'd have gotten him instead of recommending him to Durkin.

Why would Fisch take a lateral transfer (position-wise) to a lesser program? Are they offering a ton of $? Edit: supposed to be a reply to WD

I don't think poaching the DC from the team you're about to face promotes, "fair, honest, healthy competition." In addition, Mattison knows our defense and defensive players better than anyone. Harbaugh is definitely getting a good look at Shannon's coaching on film right now and soon a look in person. I'm not sure if their paths have ever crossed?

we didn't want him. I want Shannon to get the job. He was really good as Miami's DC and has deep roots in Miami and the rest of south Florida.

Why is Randy Shannon everyone's #1.  I'm not saying he's a bad choice, but his Miami teams were terrible.

because I don't want the possiiblity of a scenario in which Randy Shannon is Michigan head coach to even exist in any shape or form and every time you hire a coordinator that possibility exists.

Maryland is actually going to have a good defense. I am certain James Joseph Harbaugh will make a quality hire after the bowl game. It's not the right time to concern ourselves with this.

At present, Durkin has assembled a great defensive staff... Shafer and Mike London, which is basically two DCs, but Alabama's player personnel director, a former DC high school coach and defensive analyst for Saban. Maryland is going to be good until he bolts for a better gig.
