Will Durkin Take Any Coaches With Him?
It doesn't seem likely he'll bring any defensive position coaches with him as almost all have direct connections to JH, but with the traffic jam atop our offensive coaching ranks it wouldn't surprise me if say Jedd Fisch went with him to Maryland to become OC and we promoted T.J. Weist to Passing Game Coordinator/WR Coach.
With all the discussion about who our next DC should be, I felt it might get lost that we could end up with one or two more vacancies on staff.

DJ Durkin working to bring some #Michigan staff with him to Maryland. VIP note on that: https://t.co/QOV2VkPUGj

I heard Jim Harbaugh is going to be his passing game coordinator.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:55 PM ^
Plot Twist: John Harbaugh gets fired by Ravens and becomes Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator. Watch and see!

During Monday night's game, Tirico was calling John an "old special teams coach."
December 2nd, 2015 at 3:36 PM ^
John was a DB at Bowling Green and prior to being a HC primarily coached Special Teams, & DB's, but early on had some experience with RB's & TE's.
Never been a coordinator.
December 2nd, 2015 at 3:51 PM ^
the Ravens won't fire him, there's almost no shot of that happening.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:28 PM ^
No. These guys came to coach under Harbaugh, not Durkin. It's not like a Narduzzi situation where he's been at the school for 7 years.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:29 PM ^
Do you recall how many nard-dog took to pitt?

I'd rather see him go out and hire an accomplished DC than promote Mattison again or one of the DB coaches.
December 2nd, 2015 at 6:21 PM ^
Yeah that Mattison chump, what has he ever accomplished?
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:28 PM ^
Unless its a position coach moving to Durkin's DC they'd be fools to leave us for that program for stability purposes alone.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:29 PM ^
I can't imagine MD paying more than any coach would get here at UM. Factor in the prestige and the obvious answer is NO!
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:31 PM ^
Given how much their AD talked about becoming an offensive juggernaut (Oregon of the East) they're planning on offering a sizable amount of money to some offensive coaches to work under Durkin given his defensive background.
December 2nd, 2015 at 5:19 PM ^
Agreed. I thought Durkin's inexperience (seemingly) on offense would keep him here, spending 2-3 years learning OC from Harbaugh before grabbing an HC position.
He'll have to make sure to grab a great OC.
But c'mon, these things very well could have been lined up sometime in October for all we know.

Just throwing Under Armor money at him.

Under typical university endowment assumptions, the principal needs to be at least 20 times the annual draw, so to cover just Edsall's $2.1 million salary would require a $40+ million endowment. UA's doing good, but I doubt they have that kind of cash laying around to invest in UMD football.
December 2nd, 2015 at 4:27 PM ^
They had $3 billion in revenue last year. I think they could scrape together $40 million if they wanted to...
December 2nd, 2015 at 4:54 PM ^
Even though their founder has an outright majority stake I doubt their shareholders would be too happy about giving away the tiny profits UA currently generates to fund a football HC job at a primarily basketball school. Nike's support for Oregon mostly comes from marketing, arguably increasing Nike's own bottom line for UO sales. Phil Knight as an individual has donated $300M.
Now if we're talking about Kevin Plank, I'm not sure he's liquid enough to be able to commit $100M or whatever amount it's going to take to endow an entire football staff for the forseeable future.

+100
Corporations are people too!
Kevin Plank can give his wealth to MD, but he can't direct UA to give its assets to MD as a contribution without violating the business judgment rule (and others, since they have (public) shareholders).

To come out about how Harbaugh rubs people the wrong way.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:31 PM ^
Maryland won't be able to outbid Michigan to keep whomever Harbaugh wants.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:33 PM ^
Harbaugh could encourage a position coach to take the promotion. He's got a coach in waiting essentially in T.J. Weist.

Bigger story is - will Durkin take any of our recruits? He was primary on a bunch of our defensive recruits...

I'm so glad that we never lose recruiting battles to Maryland, otherwise we never would have gotten Stefon Diggs.

December 2nd, 2015 at 2:36 PM ^
Maybe some of the 3 stars that were wavering - like Rashad Weaver, David Reese, Dele Harding (if he's even still a commit).

Yea that sucks. On Dontavious' birthday too. :(
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:39 PM ^
The only guys I would be worried about would be any recruit that was already considering Maryland like Terrance Davis or Maryland-native commits like Devery Hamilton. But I think it is unlikely he would try to poach someone that was already committed to Michigan.

Fisch will probably end up leaving for the NFL. Besides, Harbaugh is a QB specialist so that's the least of our worries. I'm most interested in our next LB coach. That's a coaching position that clearly needs the most help.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:33 PM ^
His value isn't so much in coaching the qb's, it's in calling the passing plays during games.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:40 PM ^
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:51 PM ^
Fisch is also our WR coach, and our WRs probably outperformed expectations more than any other position group.
December 2nd, 2015 at 3:06 PM ^
That's a good point.
December 2nd, 2015 at 4:06 PM ^
If Fisch does leave heres hoping Harbaugh goes after Pep Hamilton
December 2nd, 2015 at 6:22 PM ^
is basically a second OC for Michigan. I've viewed it like him and Drevno are co-OC's.
