Source Report Sources: Durkin to Maryland
[Bryan Fuller]
In seemingly done but not official news that would have been way more disappointing last week:
Source: D.J. Durkin will be the next coach at Maryland.
— Pete Thamel (@SIPeteThamel) December 2, 2015
I think we all assumed that Durkin would be a head coach sooner or later, but not after one year, and not in Michigan's division. At least Durkin gets away from Ohio State's offense, though. Yeah.
Unless there's an 11th-hour switch here, Michigan needs a new DC and/or a LB/DL coach. Mattison can handle either unit in the front seven and could get bumped back up to the main job; Greg Jackson might be a DC possibility as well—the job he and Zordich did with Michigan's DBs was terrific.
Steve Lorenz has three DC names to watch that includes a familiar name: former Michigan DC and Syracuse HC Scott Shafer. Shafer did get a really raw deal here the first time around.

for Him..If things dont go well at Maryland thatll prob be the end of HC possibilities for future..One year does not a career make....

lol it's not like Durkin was unheard of before this season. He's been a good DC for a while.

That's rough.

Umm - me, I'm way more afraid of being in the same division as Indiana than Penn St if I'm a DC.
Results spoke for themselves on the field as far is Durkin is concerned as well...

We got new information later, via Bacon's book among other places.
December 2nd, 2015 at 3:57 PM ^
I thought Bacon's book actually was pretty skimpy on this (and on the defense in general), but we've heard from several other sources about how Shafer was undermined mid-season.
One of the great (unconfirmed) stories: upon his dismissal, Shafer reportedly said he'd take full responsibility for the defense's poor season if RR would privately admit to him that Tony Gibson was a terrible secondary coach.
When Shafer resigned:
“I take full responsibility for the demise of where the Michigan program is now,” said Shafer, who declined to answer questions in a phone interview today.

I love the varsity picture in your avatar HarbaorBust, but I think you might be kind of an idiot, or maybe even an A**hole.
Look into that, would ya?

See ya. Need to find a guy that can figure out the OSU offense. 3 straight years of giving up 42 points makes Stringer a dull boy.

If I were Harbaugh, I'd dump his ass before the bowl game. A Michigan man will coach at Michigan.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:25 PM ^
He has to get a jump on his own recruiting and building a staff so I don't think you have to worry about him sticking around. He'll be out the door by the end of the week
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:55 PM ^
Remember that time Bo said that, and he told Freider to get the Hell out, and we went on and won the National Championship?!
That was AWESOME!!!
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:14 PM ^
I hope we run it down Maryland's throat mercilessly when we play them.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:14 PM ^
This sucks. He was a key to our southern recruiting. Big Blow to the program momentum. Hopefully this doesn't impact the linebackers we need to lock down.

In fact, if you glance over at the side panel, you'll see Bama's DB coach being touted as a DCC.
He's recruited and coached up some fairly impressive players the past few years, huh?!

Scott Shafer - do not want. If you've been fired from Michigan in the last 10 years I do not want you to come back. You may be good, I just don't want to have to relive any of that.

Uh...no. Shafer was fired by RR after one season.
http://www.pennlive.com/sports/index.ssf/2013/01/sources_scott_shafer_n…
"Fired after only one year as defensive coordinator at Michigan under Rich Rodriguez, a victim of one of the worst seasons in Wolverines history, Shafer was down and out after stops at five colleges in a five-year span."

Rodriguez announced it as a resignation today, and Shafer did not dispute that.
"Yes, it is accurate," Shafer said this afternoon. "We just had a mutual decision. We had different thoughts on the way we did things. I take full responsibility for the demise of where Michigan's program is at this time." ...

Dickrod allowed his lackey to run amok. I don't blame Shafer one bit for leaving.
RR was a real stand-up guy that week.

Yeah?! Well, the rest of us just want the best possible coaches and don't particularly care how it impacts you emotionally! Sorry...
but cute cartoon outer space dog though!

the Ohio State game.

some guys with him?
It's a tough loss. But we have a head coach that has an enormous rolodex. i wouldn't be shocked to hear that JH already has a new guy lined up.
would people be ok with Schafer as DC again?
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:18 PM ^
Shafer wasn't the problem in 2008. At all.

Hoke's still on the payroll.
Hire him to coach the defensive line, which he is excellent at. Have Mattison run the defense and coach the linebackers for a year (his contract runs out after 2016).
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:49 PM ^
That's what Brady Hoke would do.

When it was announced that Greg Mattison was retained by Harbaugh, I had assumed that it was mostly because he still had one year remaining on his contract, and that there was a high likelihood that he would retire at the end of this season. Am I correct here, or does he still have more time on the contract?

LSU friends of mine would like to offer up a "lightly used Kevin Steele."
#vomit
Schafer is an interesting name given the history. Im confident in this staff's ability to find a replacement. Good for Durkin and I hope he can make a name for himself at Maryland. Winning in the East will be difficult.

you would say no at a promotion and a massive pay bump? His dream is to be a head coach and how it is realized.
If you want to argue that you think he could have gotten a better offer down the road or whatever then fine. But you can't expect young, energetic coordinators who dream of being the head coach to stay forever.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:34 PM ^
I don't think it's fair to say this is a money- and ego-driven decision. It's one thing to ask for loyalty to the team, but this isn't a lateral move or a shady deal. It's a talented defensive coordinator accepting a Big Ten head coaching job.
I don't think The Team, The Team, The Team means you can't seek to move up in the coaching ranks. Bo never held a grudge against Gary Moeller when he left to take the Illinois job.
I have questions about whether taking a job in the same division as Michigan, OSU, MSU and Penn State was the best move for Durkin, but I don't have hard feelings about him deciding for himself that it was.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:21 PM ^
This is so hilariously dumb on his part if its true.
Congrats man: You're jumping to the (at best) 5th team in the Big Ten East. Not the Big Ten as a whole but one of its divisions. You're going up against Harbaugh, Meyer and Dantonio + Penn State.
That's three stable, top-level programs and another one with that potential that even with Franklin is a superior program. Your best bet is some sort of 8-4 season where you get third in the division and even that is a long shot with the current big three there now.
I expect Durkin will be the type of coach who goes something like 4-8, 7-6, 5-7, 3-6 and gets fired and has to work his way back up. Yeah you got some nice money for a few years, but screwed yourself in the long run.

Rubs me raw given the absolute let down against OSU and the reports he interviewed last week.
Oh well, I want a man who wants to be at Michigan.
Mattison to DC, and Hoke to DL? (I'm kidding, I'm kidding.)
I wouldn't mind seeing Scott Shafer again. I always love a veteran guy with HC experience.
Oh well, In Harbaugh we trust.
