Wow USC promoting an interim seems pretty weak. I know it's a competitive market this year but USC is probably at the top of the list. This is an Illinois or Minnesota move.

It's a good move. The players like him and it gives him a chance to be the next star to grow out of the USC coaching tree. If he sucks, they can fire him in a year that should have less competition and just as many qualified coaches. Promoting an assistant can save a mil or two a year, which helps ease the sting of buyouts.
It also can salvage their recruiting class.
November 30th, 2015 at 12:01 PM ^
for consistency's sake.
But it can also hurt it.
Do recruits really think this guy is going to be here 4 years vs some soon-to-be-named "slam dunk" hire?

Pete Carroll was considered a weak hire too
November 30th, 2015 at 10:43 AM ^
I actually believe I made this exact post when Sark was hired. Keep it up, Pat.
November 30th, 2015 at 10:43 AM ^
Aw. I wish John Harbaugh would've went there. We could have the HarBowl II at the Rose Bowl.
November 30th, 2015 at 10:58 AM ^
I know you're being sarcastic, but USC is that one school that always kicks Michigan's ass historically.
The more they struggle the better imo even if they have the 3rd best college uniforms.
November 30th, 2015 at 11:06 AM ^
At least you picked up on it being sarcastic.
November 30th, 2015 at 11:50 AM ^
Keep exaggerating.
Michigan is 4-6 against them. That's not that bad.
November 30th, 2015 at 7:10 PM ^
None of those 4 wins are in your lifetime.
It's bad.

Ohio State will have a "down year" in 2016 which in all reality is still a 10-win year... I expect the 2016 version of "The Game" to be a TIGHT game.

Stop with this god damn MSU regressing back to the mean nonsense. Their on field success is finally turning into recruiting success.
MSU. Is. Not. Going. Anywhere.
I know it must be tough for you blue hairs to accept a good MSU but jesus christ let it go!!!!!
November 30th, 2015 at 11:54 AM ^
with old people, they are actually young people who dyed their hair for THE GAME and actually pay attention to recruiting.
November 30th, 2015 at 1:43 PM ^
Stop with this "MSU is going to replace 3 first round draft picks at key postitions" without missing a beat nonsense. They are not Bama, OSU, FSU etc. They are not that deep and we'll see how that recuiting does after a down year. Its like saying Ole Miss will not miss Treadwell when he leaves. It is crazy.
November 30th, 2015 at 2:53 PM ^
They've been replacing first rounders year after year... you don't go
11-2
11-3
7-6
13-1
11-2
11-1
without doing that...
When was the last time Michigan had these many strings of double digit seasons? Late 90s?
November 30th, 2015 at 3:03 PM ^
This is the sad but accurate truth.
MSU can't replace their best QB ever, right? Enter Connor Cook.
Can't replace LeVeon Bell. Enter Jeremy Langford.
Can't replace Greg Jones. Enter Max Bullough.
Can't replace Keshawn Martin. Enter Aaron Burbridge.
Can't win 11games back to back? How about back-to-back-to-back and 5 out of the last 6 seasons.
Nobody hates Michigan State more than me, but as long as Dantonio roams the sidelines, they will compete for the title. Deal with it.
November 30th, 2015 at 3:30 PM ^
No one said they couldn't replace guys like Jones or Martin. There isn't another first round draft pick to replace Cook. That's a fact. There isn't a 1st round LT sitting on the bench to replace Conklin.
Also Langford is no where near Leveon Bell.
You seem to thnk that Dantonio is Nick Saban or Jimbo Fisher or Peter Carroll. He isn't. Deal with it.
November 30th, 2015 at 4:47 PM ^
MSU is a rock-solid program. Sure they may not get to 11 wins each and every season, but their ceiling is much higher than most here seem willing to acknowledge. I think Harbaugh welcomes the challenge while realizing that periods of dominance by one or the other are probably a thing of the past, no matter how good we become.
November 30th, 2015 at 4:54 PM ^
People said UCLA was going to take over LA when USC was down. Well guess what it has not lasted. Do you also believe that Baylor and TCU will remain the class of the Big12 ahead of Ok and Texas? That has already started to reverse itself. It is not a coincidence that those programs rose while Texas and Ok were somewhat down.
Most of MSU being a rock solid program has happened with Cook under centre. Lets see what happens when he leaves.
November 30th, 2015 at 10:45 AM ^
If USC had trouble finding a suitable candidate, then things are really going to get interesting for some of these other schools looking to make a hire. I wonder if they are taking the Illinois approach and punting on a job search for couple years. I guess USC should always get players so it is unlikely the cupboard will be bare, but this could open the door for UCLA and Jim Mora the next couple years.
November 30th, 2015 at 11:08 AM ^
Helton just punked Mora's team with a depleted roster, not sure why you get the impression that would turn around super quickly.
November 30th, 2015 at 11:31 AM ^
Both teams have been pretty decimated by injuries this year so I am not reading too much into this one game. If Helton can upset Stanford this weekend, I think he may get a bump from that, but I am guessing the Helton hire was a best case scenario for UCLA.
November 30th, 2015 at 1:53 PM ^
...UCLA's roster was arguably even more depleted, if one looks at what made them successful the last two years: Eddie Vanderdoes and Miles Jack. Guarantee you USC doesn't push UCLA around if those two guys were healthy and playing that game.

..lots of attractive candidates but outside of Saban, Meyer and our coach-not too many confirmed difference makers at a Power 5 Conf level-you're rolling the dice on almost anyone.
IMO Hermann and Narduzzi will bide their time as logical heir apparents at OSU/MSU. Dantonio is 60 and Meyer historically doesn't stick around too long.
November 30th, 2015 at 11:24 AM ^
(Hopes Meyer jumps to the NFL)
November 30th, 2015 at 11:26 AM ^
..he's a College coach through and through. I don't believe he's ever been connected with an NFL opening.
November 30th, 2015 at 11:25 AM ^
November 30th, 2015 at 11:31 AM ^
..for him, I believe a lot of the Texans on OSU are notches in his dashboard. OSU would be a turn-key opportunity for him, whereas Texas would be a rebuild.
Houston played on Friday and I'd bet Hermann was somehow in the ears of Meyer and Warinner during the game.
November 30th, 2015 at 10:45 AM ^
Were we recruiting against SC for anyone?
November 30th, 2015 at 10:47 AM ^
Keyshon Camp is currently a USC commit. I think he was high on the current coaching staff and Helton so this may actually make it harder to flip him. But long term, I think this is good for Michigan in CA recruiting.
November 30th, 2015 at 10:49 AM ^
USC commits Cary Angeline, Keyshon Camp, Josh Imatorbhebhe, Velus Jones, Frank Martin, C.J. Pollard, and Trevon Sidney all have Michigan offers.
Camp has visited Michigan twice. Jones took his first visit to Michigan this past weekend. The other guys are generally not interested.
November 30th, 2015 at 11:02 AM ^
November 30th, 2015 at 11:12 AM ^
Premium sites seem down on our chances with Camp after his visit.
November 30th, 2015 at 11:49 AM ^
That's fine if we get Gary. I think taking Elliott AND Gary AND Camp would be a little bit of overkill.
November 30th, 2015 at 11:16 AM ^
an OV there. We recruit against USC for a lot of recruits every year, especially the CA kids we target. This year you could include at least Lamar Jackson and David Long.

November 30th, 2015 at 10:49 AM ^
I don't think it had the sheer force of Michigan against Brandon, but USC is a private school. But there have been a lot of rumblings about how Haden has looked pretty incompetent in his hiring of Sarkisian and how he handled the incident at the Salute to Troy before the season began.
