Hypothetically, if we were to win out and beat the number 1 and 2 teams in the country, would we make the playoff?

Most likely, early season road loss just like ohio last year, plus several ranked opponents. Just as long as at least one conference winner has a loss (except maybe utah since H2H), or two of them if notre dame wins out (in which case, ACC is one)... But that's all fantasy at this point. Hell even next week will be tough

And Va Tech did not have a great season, in part due to a slew of injuries. I think Utah likely will be a better quality loss at the end of this season than Va Tech was. I can't see you being left out if you won out. Maybe if TCU, the SEC Champ, ND (or maybe ACC champ) and UCLA all went undefeated. But I think the chances of that happening are pretty small.

Based on the "Ole Miss" ranking-logic all we need to do is beat the #2 team and we'll move up to #3! So yes is the answer to your question. Since this isn't the SEC though, I think if we won both games it woudl just mean that no B1G team would be in the playoffs. Who's ready for a TCU vs. Ole Miss championship game!

If we beat BYU we will definitely be in the others receiving votes category.

However, I don't think it will be enough to get us in unless we blow them out.

Beating Maryland wouldn't get us in unless a bunch of the lower top 25 teams lose that weekend.

However, if we beat BYU, Maryland and Northwestern, especially if Northwestern holds serve against Ball State and Minnesota (at home), we should 100% be ranked. I'd guess about #23 ish.

OSU, TCU, LSU are my picks for the top 3 going into the playoff. I'm just not sure who will get that last spot. I'm actually leaning Notre Dame or FSU. FSU because of schedule, ND because they probably just beat the best team left on their schedule and the QB will get better week by week.

OSU, MSU, and Notre Dame all in the top ten at once...mother of god. The sad part is I don't think MSU is even as good as they were last year (though they're still good). When we go up against BYU next week that will give us a pretty good indication of whether we stand a chance against MSU or not.

Our defense will continue to improve and will be wrecking teams by the end of the year (which is good since Ohio State is at the end of the year). Durkin knows what he is doing as does Mattison. Wormley will continue to be a revelation and the secondary will get better.

Harbaugh has a track record of improving teams over the year (it's called developing talent). We haven't seen much of this developing of talent over the last half decade or more so people here are less inclined to acknowledge it's impact going forward. Bottom line, offense will get better.

I'd like to see how our defense holds up in coverage against BYU before annointing this defense.

I think we'll hold up nicely against most running teams, but we haven't been tested by a QB that can throw the ball all over the field.

Harbaugh can only do so much, but he has a track record of upsets. He will use this as motivation for his guys. I have to believe we will be ready to play tough football in both games.

Meat for us to pad our strength of schedule with. By the time we beat #1 & #2, that pesky Utah loss will all but be forgotten. We're a lock for the playoffs now.

The full poll is here - we'll run with the thread generating more discussion.

The distribution by conference now looks like this, if I counted right -

Pac-12 - 6

SEC - 6

Big Ten - 4

Big 12 - 4

ACC - 3

Independents - 2

Number 1. Followed by LSU, Ole Miss and then Michigan State. Notre Dame is first out or number 5 right now until We see more Kizer. Ohio State is 6th and Tcu cannot play defense and should be 7. I'll stop here. I will bet a paycheck that when the real playoff poll comes, Sparty will be ranked above Ohio State and the number one team will be one of three SEC teams and deservedly so.
