New BLL excerpt on why Hackett was chosen

Just so we're clear, Bo did not coin the phrase "Michigan Man." It goes back all the way to Yost. It became nationally famous when Bo fired Frieder, but it's been around all along.

Yost invented the term and defined what it meant. But Bo invoked it as AD in replacing Frieder with Fisher and it's in that application that its meaning has been reinvented. For, Bo it was an extension of his value system and what he taught as a coach in the team concept being bigger than an individual. So it encompassed a number of ideals but in the context within which he enforced its meaning, it was based on integrity and loyalty.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
Christianity is a philosophy based on Judiasm but focuses on one guy (Jesus).
Buddhism is a philosophy based on Hinduism but focuses on one guy (Buddha).
Is Christianity not a religion?

for centuries that theirs is not a religion; Religion 101 says it's more philosophy than religion. "Hey, I'm going to parade my ignorance by negging this guy, make clear that I know nothing about the subject!"

I had planned to take Bacon's book with me on an October beach vacation. It's become quite evident to me that it won't wait til then.

Look, if you agree that the original meaning was about the kind of integrity and character a Michigan Man was supposed to have, along with love and loyalty for Michigan, then Michigan Men who saw the lack of Michigan Man character RichRod had were correct to have the attitude that RR wasn't a Michigan Man... because he wasn't, not because he was an outsider or a "hillbilly," but because of things he did and said and the way he acted and what his attitude was. People loved Jed, Jethro, & Ellie May even though they were "hillbillies," because they were good people, but Granny rubbed people the wrong way.
RR = Granny!
The question is whether they were right, whether they were judging him accurately. They weren't saying he wasn't a Michigan Man simply because he didn't come from Michigan! The same fucking people embraced Beilein, who came from the same fucking school as RichRod, and had no Michigan ties, because he DID have "Michigan Man" character! Beilein struggled his first 3 years also, but he didn't generate the animosity that RR did because he wasn't the same kind of person with the same attitude!

For a guy with 2 degrees you're really having a hard time with this. That it means something different now is your opinion, but it's not true even if you are right that a bunch of "good ol' boys" besmirched the name with behavior not up to the standards of Michigan Men. If that's true then it means THEY, weren't really Michigan Men after all, or weren't behaving as MM at the time anyway, but they didn't change the meaning of the phrase and concept. I don't agree that that's the case from what I know though.
I don't know all the inside scoop, I didn't even read the book, though I've probably heard all the accusations. I've also heard my own inside stories of how a few of the good ol' boys felt who were against him. I can get fuller stories about that if I bother to ask about it from my family member source, but I haven't.
On the other hand I heard a bunch of negative stories about RR from a variety of non revenue sport athletes who had interactions or observations, or heard stuff from their football player friends/boy friends. I also spoke to a group of Canadian high school coaches on the night of RichRod's first practice at Michigan, they watched practice on the first day of their stay for the coaching clinic given by the M staff and they did NOT have a good first impression of him as a person!
