Yost invented the term and defined what it meant. But Bo invoked it as AD in replacing Frieder  with Fisher and it's in that application that its meaning has been reinvented. For, Bo it was an extension of his value system and what he taught as a coach in the team concept being bigger than an individual. So it encompassed a number of ideals but in the context within which he enforced its meaning, it was based on integrity and loyalty.

But you're still comparing a flag whose original intent was to represent white supremacy, slavery, racism, and ultimately, treason to a term originally meant to be used to describe a man of integrity and character who strives for excellence in all that he does. Like, are you really going to make that comparison? Because in both cases, you should take the original meaning as the *real* meaning, because It's where it came from that mattered, not how people are misusing it now. The confederate flag, despite what people say otherwise, is a symbol of racism. To call it something else is to ignore its history. And in that regard, the same applies to Michigan Man.

like the word "Evil." Stupid, bigoted, clueless, small-minded, cowardly, vicious, vindictive, unjustifiably complacent, intellectually dishonest and vile-tempered bags of snot are just as easily capable of pronouncing or printing the term and, often enough to be confusing, using it as the correct part of speech in a complete sentence as is anyone else. Therefore, it is rendered only contextually relevent, and its correct use in a sentence is, in and of itself, no proof of the existence of intelligent life.

my heart for anybody - save for those monsters that have perpetuated genocide, atrocities against humanity, UBL, Jerry Sandusky & JoePa - but I truly hate David Brandon. I hate him.

The Michigan man label is one of the great traditions of the school up there with winningest program, those who stay, and winged helmets. It has been sabotaged by members of the media and a few people in the university who don't understand it. No need destroying because of the bad apples.

Look, if you agree that the original meaning was about the kind of integrity and character a Michigan Man was supposed to have, along with love and loyalty for Michigan, then Michigan Men who saw the lack of Michigan Man character RichRod had were correct to have the attitude that RR wasn't a Michigan Man... because he wasn't, not because he was an outsider or a "hillbilly," but because of things he did and said and the way he acted and what his attitude was. People loved Jed, Jethro, & Ellie May even though they were "hillbillies," because they were good people, but Granny rubbed people the wrong way.

RR = Granny!

The question is whether they were right, whether they were judging him accurately. They weren't saying he wasn't a Michigan Man simply because he didn't come from Michigan! The same fucking people embraced Beilein, who came from the same fucking school as RichRod, and had no Michigan ties, because he DID have "Michigan Man" character! Beilein struggled his first 3 years also, but he didn't generate the animosity that RR did because he wasn't the same kind of person with the same attitude!

Schlissel comes off impressively. I was a tad scared of his background and some of the initial statements he made when he was hired furthered that fear, but clearly he gets it and can distinguish real from fake,which was the largest problem facing Michigan Athletics.

It means outstanding person who would give their life for the block M. If you think it should be retired you don't understand it and you obviously don't if you think it's like the swastika.

You seem to have the need to label everything. And yet you cannot understand the simple concept of an important way of describing somebody who embodies everything that the university stands for. In this world, there is objective right and wrong. In the same way, titles mean things. Because they are misinterpreted by some, does not mean they should be abolished or take on a new meaning.

For a guy with 2 degrees you're really having a hard time with this. That it means something different now is your opinion, but it's not true even if you are right that a bunch of "good ol' boys" besmirched the name with behavior not up to the standards of Michigan Men. If that's true then it means THEY, weren't really Michigan Men after all, or weren't behaving as MM at the time anyway, but they didn't change the meaning of the phrase and concept. I don't agree that that's the case from what I know though.

I don't know all the inside scoop, I didn't even read the book, though I've probably heard all the accusations. I've also heard my own inside stories of how a few of the good ol' boys felt who were against him. I can get fuller stories about that if I bother to ask about it from my family member source, but I haven't.

On the other hand I heard a bunch of negative stories about RR from a variety of non revenue sport athletes who had interactions or observations, or heard stuff from their football player friends/boy friends.  I also spoke to a group of Canadian high school coaches on the night of RichRod's first practice at Michigan, they watched practice on the first day of their stay for the coaching clinic given by the M staff and they did NOT have a good first impression of him as a person!
