I'm Rooting for Shane

Submitted by fortissimosca on

Since it appears to be a two horse race now and there doesn't seem to be a lot of people in the Team Morris camp, I thought I would throw my support in for a few reasons:

1. Seeing Shane succeed would be the cherry on top of the Bursley Soft Serve Ice Cream on a Waffle Sundae demonstrating the ineptitude of the previous regime.  Concussion gate was the boiling point for the last administration, and I want to see Harbaugh take the centerpiece from that and turn him into a champion.

2. I want to see the hometown metro Detroit kid who "just wants to play" recover from one of the worst moments in U of M history and take us to a National Championship (Big 10 Championship?...bowl game?........beating Rutgers?)

3. I'm concerned about Rudock losing his job at Iowa, whose playbook is about as simple as a corn farmer's tinder account.  Harbaugh's QB turnarounds have been attributed to simplified reads allowing the passer to make quicker/better decisions.  Rudock was superseded in a similar environment while Morris hasn't been in that environment.

I know I am rooting for the underdog.  Neg away if you must.

edit: I apologize for the addition of the cup size to Rudock's name

Team Shane Morris. If Harbaugh can help Shane grow and he gets better give me two years of Shane Morris rather one of Rudock then in 16 we have yet another QB battle

With that argument, you could also say give me one year of Rudock and two years of O'Korn (assuming that the rumors are true and O'Korn is the best of the bunch and remains that way next year). I like Shane and wish him the best, but I'm rooting for the quarterback that gives us the best chance to win this year.

I'm not convinced Rudock so much as lost the job as it's Ferentz trying to recreate the days of Brad Banks, the last time anyone so much as worried about the Iowa offense. Beathard is a lot more mobile than Rudock is, but time will tell if he's actually any sort of upgrade as a quarterback.

Regardless, I just want a QB who can a) help the team score points and b) not turn the ball over constantly. Doesn't matter to me if it's Morris, Rudock, Gentry, Malzone, or Joe Schmoe coming out of the stands.

I think Beathard and Rudock were about even last year.  But Beathard is the younger player, and was making noises about how he was going to transfer if Ferentz didn't make him the starter.  It's not like Iowa is brimming with QB talent.  From Ferentz's perspective, if you have to lose one guy to a transfer, you'd probably rather it be Rudock since you're only giving up one year of a guy rather than two, and plus an improved version of Beathard might be better in the long run anyway.  Hence, from a game theory standpoint, you'd assign the worst possible value to a Beathard transfer, a less-bad value to a Rudock transfer, and the highest possible value to no transfers.

So, Ferentz did his thing where the two QBs would alternate in the bowl game and the better guy would play the second half.  Beathard won that little duel (even though Iowa was down 35-7 at halftime), so that gave Ferentz the cover he needed to name Beathard the starter and avoid the worst possible outcome.  Then it came down to whether Rudock would stay and compete for the position (probably with a stacked deck), or transfer out.  But Ferentz really couldn't control that, since as a grad transfer Rudock can go where he wants.  Ferentz probably still figures he did the best he could with the hand he was dealt.

Personally, I think Ferentz should have just told Beathard, "the best QB plays.  You want to start?  Prove you're the best.  Otherwise, STFU.  And if you want to transfer, go for it," and then let the chips fall.  But that's probably why I don't get paid several million dollars a year to run a mediocre football program.

That there are a whole lot more "Shane supporters" than you think. The fanbase has had some rough years, and they are on their heels as far as putting a label on ANYONE at all, let alone Shane Morris. But my thoughts are, the ideal situation is for Shane to win it. But I also think Harbaugh is not going to give it over to Morris evern if he wins it slightly.........If Shane is going to win it, it will be in a convincing manner. Thats why Harbaugh brought Ruddock in, to push the full potential out of Morris. If it backfires, he has 7 other options at QB to groom.

I think Morris wins the starting position in a convincing manner, but its going to probably take most of the Non-conference schedule to do it.

I grew up playing hockey with a guy who was/family was corn farmers. If high school was any indication he probably doesn't need a very complex Tinder profile.

I'm a Michigan fan. I want whoever gives us the best chance to win to play. I don't care if they platoon Morris and Rudock, and play whoever has the hot hand.

Regarding Morris, however, there are several things that need to happen for him to play.

  • He needs to decisively show that he doesn't lock onto a primary receiver in a way that the opposing defense is able to easily intercept the ball.
  • Is he going through all his progressions, or does he panic too soon?
  • Does Morris have clear command of the offense in a way that Michigan runs the ball, passes the ball, and is not ridiculously predictable?
  • Does Morris have better touch, and not rifle short screens and dumps in a way that is extremely difficult to catch?

I always wanted Morris to work, but I think he is just too small. I think he was super good in high school at one point, but it never was going to translate into the big boy league (college not NFL). I want to be wrong, but I'm just being realistic as far as what we've seen so far. I think his glory days are over with unfortunately for him.

What a jackass post by the OP. Yes, I'm calling you out. Root for the QB in the game, root for the QB to WIN football games, and most of all root for MICHIGAN.

All this does is ask people to pick sides or just angry with you for being obsessed with a player who hasn't done jackshit to this point in his career. What is this Brady Hoke favoritism that was rumored?

There shouldn't be TEAM MORRIS vs. TEAM RUDOCK. Not on the team, not among the fanbase.

This is ridiculous. I get having a favorite, whatever...but to start a post about which guy you want to win? That is beyond silly. I want both of them to succeed and I want the best one to play and WIN.

It's not about Rudock or Morris, it's about MICHIGAN and winning each and every game we play. PERIOD.

Asked him how camp was going, what we can expect this season. He said camp was going really well, and he likes the team. In response to the second question: "This team is going to get better every day". Pretty basic coach speak, but a lot more than he gives the national media. Interesting experiment if you'd like to try it, [email protected] (listed on his Twitter so I know it's legit)
