Brady Hoke comments on Harbaugh, Brandon & tenure at Michigan
"The former Michigan head coach appeared on Detroit Sports 105.1-FM Friday with host Matt Dery, touching on a variety of topics. And, of course, he was asked about the man who replaced him -- Jim Harbaugh."

He sounds like a boob. I mean he can't put two thoughts together. I never really knew who he was before we hired him, but from the first time that I heard him talk, I just thought he sounded like a total boob. It can't be fully grasped in print, it comes out better on video. Looks like a boob, sounds like a boob, coaches/acts like a boob - he's a boob. But I would not have cared if he had won more.
I don't see how he can pull off a radio show, unless he just interviews people and let's them do all of the talking. Dude cannot speak intelligently. I just want to gouge out my eyes with a rusty fork when I hear him speak!

There isn't more of a homerun hire than Harbaugh to Michigan. Looks like the article left out the parts where he was asked about player development and he pointed to guys who had already been in the Michigan program for a few years before he got there (Mike Martin, Lewan, Schofield). He is right though, he does owe Brandon a lot, millions, to be exact.
Anyway, no point in dragging the man through the mud any further. It is what it is at this point. I'd rather focus on the bright future of Michigan football than rehash the negatives of its recent history.

one season. All were starters before he arrived. He could have used much better examples. Jake Ryan comes to mind. He might have given a nod to guys still on the team that fans should watch. I feel most coaches would have done just that. He's clearly not at home in the media.

Hoke did not get into any detail about his overall conversation with interim athletic director Jim Hackett, who fired him Dec. 2, but did say he believes he left the program in fine shape for Harbaugh.
If you look at it from a talent standpoint, the baseline was pretty high, I would think - I agree with him in this respect. The thing that seemed lacking is the thing we are pretty sure we'll get out of this staff, of course, which is the coaching and the development to get that talent to maximize their potential. I think that's the thing (well, one of them) that burned me most in the end - so many names and the previous staff had trouble maximizing their potential.

not perfect by any means, but in terms of talent it was certainly was no dumpster fire. it's one of the reasons we all think JH is going to have a very nice year, starting on 9/3/15.

This maybe semantics, we have potential, not talent. Potential is all the 4 & 5 stars who are here, but have not been developed thus we can not and have not seen that real talent develop on the field. Question is how long till JH can take that potential and develop it into real on the field seeable talent. And Hoke needs to stop talking about our guys were young, he was here 4 years and THE ohio just won a NC with a lot of young players.

the new guy usually walks into a total mess, or at best, a 'meh' set up. see rich rod for details. JH was left with a lot of talent. of course it needs to be developed, but he's got great seed stock. i have every confidence he's going to show forth wonderfully.

The size of the contract Brandon gave to Hoke was borderline fraudulant given his experience and qualifications.

@GoBlue96 - Absolutely spot on.....AND, regardless of the size of the contract, no other AD in a Power 5 school would have even considered Brady for the job, period.
Hoke owes 90% of his family fortune to DB.

Apparently Hoke didn't learn during his time here that, unfortunately, that is not true.
August 14th, 2015 at 4:01 PM ^
If he really believed that, small wonder he was so unsuccessful as a coach. It is great to love the school, critical to build character, graduate players, etc., but this is football, and the idea is you have to win, and if you suck, no one gets all that excited about how much you may love the school.

To be fair, nobody is going to go on the radio and just say, "I was in over my head."
I will not remember his time at Michigan fondly (but the Sugar Bowl was probably the best trip I ever took). He should count his blessings. He had the greatest job on the planet for four years, got to live in a big custom-built house, and eat steaks every night. Hoke will get another sniff somewhere. But he was complicit in Dave Brandon's bozo scheme, and carries around a lot of bitterness towards the media for someone who had a lottery ticket job, if you ask me.
August 14th, 2015 at 5:57 PM ^
I mind less that he was over his head than the fact that nearly every assistant outside of Madison was too. Dabo Sweeny strikes me as a Hoke level talent with much better coordinators.
August 14th, 2015 at 3:56 PM ^
With all his talk about how winning in losing is not the only thing, he should coach the 49ers. Like Hoke, but he was just not the right guy to run our program.
August 14th, 2015 at 3:57 PM ^
And his defense of Brandon is just absurd . . . .
