Helmet Stickers back!

Submitted by DrMantisToboggan on

Chris Balas (rivals) is reporting that Harbaugh has decided to bring back Helmet stickers and do away with Legends jerseys. This comes a day after Jim favorited a tweet from a fan asking if helmet stickers would come back this year.

I am not sure about all of the feelings on this board, but I believe helmet stickers were one of our best aesthetic traditions until they were discontinued in the 90's. We had them for all of Bo's years except one, and you can be damn sure that Jimmy's helmet was covered in 'em.

Stickers don't make the wings disappear. It doesn't take anything away. Even with a helmet full of stickers you can still see the original helmet. This addition only enhances it.

Hmmm...I seem to be in the extreme minority on the helmet stickers.  I don't exactly hate them and I'm not going to waste energy complaining about them.  I just think they're highly unnecessary.  Lloyd's philosophy was absolutely correct about this being a TEAM sport.  But based purely on aesthetics, I see them more as clutter.

Compare it to the epicness that is the big house.   Unlike the rest of the stadiums in the country, Michigan doesn't showcase in HUGE numbers the years of every national title, the 42 conference titles, the Heisman winners, etc. all over the inside of the stadium and all over the pressboxes.  The stadium speaks for itself.  It's majestic on it's own.  It has no need for clutter.  I feel the same way about the helmets.  But that's just me.

I guess it's a better trade to live with knowing the legends jerseys are gone.  Seeing someone wearing the 98 felt wrong on so many levels.

Dont agree with the TEAM argument. Everyone on the team has an opportunity to earn a sticker, and my guess is that stickers are awareded for both contributions to the team, such as leadership, enthusiasm, blocking, and individual skill and hard work.

Thus, individual stickers can be a reflection of contribution to the team.

agree.  They have to be smaller, that is a must.  Watching old games on classic with the stickers made my eyes hurt.  It really did get in the way of an awesome helmet design.

As for Legends jerseys, wish I could say it was a pleasure but I would be lying.  Those could not go quick enough.

But thank God on doing away with the legacy jerseys! Just an all around awful idea, brought on by DB to $ell more jerseez.

I'm actually more excited about doing away with the legends jerseys. It is absolutely a nice idea, and I like honoring past players. But half the fun as a fan is having new players and new numbers take on a new significance. That's lost when all your iconic players are all wearing the same numbers. The #1 jersey I think should be the only exception to that rule.

Stickers I can take or leave.

I don't mind Legends Jerseys if it just meant there was a small patch commemorating  the former players who wore that jersey. No need for any forced fanfare or hooplah over who "earned" what jersey. Just let the players know that if they pick X number, you'll have a patch because so and so wore that jersey too.

I always was ambivalent to the stickers per se, but then I always did like the notion of a player being able to somehow wear recognition of their individual, unit and team achievements. That probably limits you to helmet stickers and not much else when it comes to football and how the structure of the uniform. I can roll with it.

As for the legends jerseys, I tend to agree with the people that say that with better execution, this could have evolved into a neat little tradition, keeping revered numbers in circulation and keeping the history in present conversation. I think they might have been sold to players and the public in a less-than-ideal way though.

Don't really care that much. Hopefully they'll be smaller than the ones in the past because too many of those looks bad. I'm just glad they got rid of the Legends jerseys!

are a great motivational tool.  As much as M is about the team the team, there is something compelling about putting your helmet on with lots of stickers on it.  Motivates non starters to want to start.  My question is how is a sticker/star/football on your helmet usually awarded?  Coaches discretion, defined parameters or what?

 ...then...

1.  Make them smaller so they do not interfere with the classic design of the helmet so much

2.  Make them hard to earn.  They should signify going above and beyond, making a truely outstanding play, scoring high grades, etc.  They should not be given out like candy for doing the things that players are expected to do anyway.

3.  All players start with clean hemlets each fall--no seniors with helmets full of stickers for the first game of the season.  Each season a players prove themselves and earn new stickers, regadless of class and/or accomplishments in prior seasons.

4.  Change the design from the dated wolverine sketch.  Make it the seal of the University of Michigan, or some other classy design.

The old style helmet stickers are way too dated.

Also, using the seal of the university would convey something that other schools never try to convey with their sports uniforms--that the school is a top rated academic institution, and not just a football factory.

Glad to see the end of the Legends jerseys, BTW...

Now if we can just get rid of the 'Big Ten' and "adidas' logo clutter on the jerseys, and also end the 'uniformz' monstrosity...

1.  I did not list "requirements."  I offered ideas.  You know.  Opinions.  That is what people do here on the board.

2.  There is nothing 'intricate' about my comment.  Or is anything beyond 148 characters considered too 'intricate'?  If so, then maybe your response itself is too 'intrictate.'

3.  Even if it were 'intricate' (which it was not), there is nothing wrong with intricate.

4.  My comment did not include 'a long list.'  Four items is not a long list.

5.  My comment was not pompous.  If anything, 'Science' was closer to pompous.

6.  I did engage the 'substance' of 'Science's' comment.  I responded that Science should address the ideas of my comments.

I disagree with the substance of the ideas in your comment.  I do, however, appreciate that you did engage on substance.

Some of the 70s teams just had so many big stickers on their helmets. I would make them smaller and tougher to earn. I don't mind seeing a half dozen going up the back of the helmet but to have dozens of them plastered all over the helmet doesn't look to good.

Any how, I'm more interested in Harbaugh building our football program back into a national power.

I like it but it needs to be done right. I always thought that the stickers we had back in the day were to big. We need something smaller I think. Maybe small block M's or something but that is very similar to the Shartans with their block S which I don't like.

I liked the Legends jerseys. They just did it wrong. L et anybody have the number they want at any time. If a freshman RB comes in and wants to wear 21 I think that's fine keep Desomds patch on it because he is the one who made that number "famous". Let's say Gentry comes in and wants to wear his high school number 11. That's fine just put the patch on it.

As long as they're not too big and they don't overpower the helmet, it's all good for me. I do like it though because il those stickers are another point of pride and further promotes competition. No one wants to be the guy with no stickers.

I'm a bit disappointed that the Legends jerseys are going away, because they offered us a chance to honor more players.

What does this mean for #21?  It was never retired but received a Legend patch for Desmod.

As for the stickers, while they do clutter the helmet a bit, they were something I grew up with so I'm a bit nostalgic for them.  In any event, we'll begin each season with clean helmets.
