Helmet Stickers back!

Submitted by DrMantisToboggan on

Chris Balas (rivals) is reporting that Harbaugh has decided to bring back Helmet stickers and do away with Legends jerseys. This comes a day after Jim favorited a tweet from a fan asking if helmet stickers would come back this year.

I am not sure about all of the feelings on this board, but I believe helmet stickers were one of our best aesthetic traditions until they were discontinued in the 90's. We had them for all of Bo's years except one, and you can be damn sure that Jimmy's helmet was covered in 'em.

Love the stickers, do not like discontinuing the legends jerseys. Execution of it was bad, but the idea of legends jerseys was unique and solved the problem of jerseys not being retired. Just fix the execution.

I don't think the helmet stickers add much, honestly. I hope they keep a clean look on the helmet, with smaller stickers. They will look good regardless if they win.  As head coach, this is Harbaugh's judgment, and if he thinks they will help win games and reinforce his competitive culture, then so be it.

On eliminating the Legends Jerseys- I don't think it was necessary to eliminate them, I think that they should simply be reserved for players who have actually accomplished something. Team captains, or returning All Big Ten players should have the right to wear them, if they choose. Make it a true honor, instead of an arbitrary distinction. I see the logic behind eliminating them, though. I hope that there is an alternative way for us to honor those players, perhaps with statues around the stadium, or something along those lines.

Helmet stickers back...meh. Why ruin an already classy helmet?

Legacy jerseys gone...yes!!! You want to honor past players???? Retire their jerseys like most of the civilized world does.

Now get the hell off my lawn!! #OldSchool

Not a fan of either of these developments. I thought the Legends jerseys were very unique and am not big on helmet stickers. Our helmet looks awesome as is. I'll wait to see what they look like before complaining more though.

I personally think that the clean helmet looks better, but if there going to do it maybe make them smaller.  So that it doesn't clutter up the hemlet to much.

Love this. If the kids and coaches like them, I'm all for it. I don't care about grumpy as fans saying it "ruins" the look of the helmet. I want a bunch of stickers and half of them covered in the other teams paint.

Let the coaches evaluate and reward the players on an individual, platoon, and team basis.  We should applaud accountability and internal recognition - positive behaviors.

The idea behind helmet stickers is cool (reward, incentive, all that fun stuff) but as so many others have said, it looks terrible combined with Michigan's helmet.  Clutter all over the place.

The stickers will definitely be smaller (everything equipment-related in this day and age is), so that'll help.  If they can make them look good, I'll be all for it.

Helmet stickers are tradition. Harbaugh understands this tradition better than anyone. I don't like or dislike the stickers, I like the reason they're given out and the extra motivation they create. I do hope the stickers are smaller and blend in better, but either way I'm fine with it.

I think this breaks down along generational lines. If your fanhood started pre '70s then you don't like them. If your fanhood started in the '70s or '80s you like them. If your fanhood started in the '90s or later you don't like them. I'm a '90s guy myself.

I'd let Desmond Morgan wear 48 legends jersey this season and then just get rid of em.  Nobody on the roster is wearing 11, 21, 47, 87, or 98.  Seems like the simplest solution.

It was a Bo thing and was great as a kid, especially watching Desmond's helmet fill up as the season moved on. By the Rose Bowl it looked great. Harbaugh brought them to Stanford, you knew he was bringing them back. It was Carr that stopped doing it. If Bo defines this program I say we should embrace what he started and bring them back.

Harbaugh seems to like symbolic gestures for good work.  I don't have a problem with that.  In one of the videos from Spring Practice he talked about giving a certificate for perfect attendance at Spring Practice and how proud the players should be to earn it.  It sounded a bit odd, but I'm sure he's using it as a motivational tool, to demand excellence both on and off the field.
