Honey I Shrunk the Recruiting Board
Updated with the new info today - curious who the second Jay Harbaugh yell was.
I didn't include said TE transfer who followded Jay or whatnot.
We have 6 spots open - I'll say 5 with Perry "deciding tomorrow". And 4 spots with the second mystery Jay Harbaugh primal scream.
No CBs love us.
We're really not a clear favorite for anyone other than the top 2 guys on this list. (EDIT - Well Wheatley) Hmm..

A lot of things work in our favor in 2016: a big recruiting class, good talent in our own region, we can offer playing time, the B1G East has some buzz, and Harbaugh and staff will have time to build relationships and get kids to A2 in the summer and fall, not January.
We just have to have a 2015 on the field that does not detract from this. It doesn't even have to be great, just enough to show forward momentum.
It needs to be a season at least like Penn State's 2014 season . . . played National Champion OSU tough, had a few key wins, won a bowl game, and most importantly, looked better at the end of the season than the beginning. It was not even a good season, but it was enough to show momentum.
February 3rd, 2015 at 10:32 AM ^
they all assume they will play regardless of who is in front of them. That is why the top programs reel in top talent every year. If we are selling playing time that likely means trouble.
February 3rd, 2015 at 11:00 AM ^
Why not in the state? The area means Ohio and they are stacked. Urban will get first pick though.
February 3rd, 2015 at 9:32 AM ^
If Harbaugh can't turn it around, just shut down the program.
Come on now, PSU was in a much worse situation and even they made a comeback(at least in recruiting).
February 2nd, 2015 at 11:56 PM ^
with much less. Honestly, this board is going nuts. Next year will be decent and Harbaugh is going to start building this thing in the right direction. People need to chill out.
February 3rd, 2015 at 9:34 AM ^
Agreed. PSU 4* = 13 of 24, OH 4/5* = 13 of 25, Spart 4* = 5 of 19. UM has 6 and will land 1 - 3 more. This is a tiny class whose make up won't be that far off an average year. The expectations for an elite finish were unrealistic (though possible).
Harbaugh has won with less and will continue that trend. He's got power 5 talent and a roster ready to win, IMO. The 2016 class will turn these recruiting frowns upside down by fall camp (if NSD doesn't do so first).

Clark tweeted that this decision will be extremely difficult to make so I doubt he's leaning UCLA or anything at this point.

For the most part, if a player is transferring, it is because they were not and do not expect to be a starter with their current team, e.g., Hayes, Ferns, Bellomy, Heitzman.
Do you really want somelse's Hayes, Ferns, Bellomy, Heitzman? Remember the heralded Chad Lindsay who transferred from Alabama to Ohio State last year?
February 3rd, 2015 at 8:54 AM ^
So in answer to your question do we want players who couldn't start for other teams: Most definitely! You make it seem as if we've been good and other teams don't potentially have better players than ours? Chad Lindsey didn't wash out on ability, he was injured. Doesn't mean Bama, Stanford, TCU etc don't have other players that couldn't start for them but that would vastly improve ours! The clamoring for a Kevin Hogan transfer on this blog is a case on point.
February 3rd, 2015 at 9:07 AM ^
Kevin Hogan is not transferring.
February 3rd, 2015 at 9:30 AM ^
I felt I made pretty clear that I'm not advocating banking schollies for transfers, but to imply other schools don't potentially have better players than ours is wrong.

Best case realistic scenario: Clark, Weber, Wheatley, Perry and Jefferson. Thats 14 players, 9 4 Stars.
February 3rd, 2015 at 7:31 AM ^
That's best case. Not sure about the realistic part for Clark and Weber and Jefferson.

i'm not too worried about this year. next year we can have nice things like wins and recruits and the year after that we can has all the nice things!!!!!!!
February 3rd, 2015 at 12:29 AM ^
Well if this was the price to get out there and get Jimmy MF Harbaugh the I say it was really cheap, we have a lot of returning players and that's what is important, it is not like the 2008 team that returned very little and was very dependant on really young players, Michigan has one of the most seasoned groups of players returning and next class should be also kinda small at around 20 and that's a good thing, we have lots of players already in the team and they were pretty decently ranked, if Harbaugh can squeeze the skills this players showed when they were recruited then this should be a very good football team. I don't give a damn if none of the players recruited this year don't see the field this year, that's how much bodies we have returning. A handful of really usefull players down the road in this class will be icing on the top. Players like Frank Clark, Willie Henry or Desmond Morgan weren't higly hyped and they have contributed a whole lot to the team so that's what I expect.
February 3rd, 2015 at 7:35 AM ^
And the "cost" plays into Harbaugh's hands.
The issue is what we will look like two years down the road. That's where we will have a fall off of 4/5 star talent. But that's Harbaugh's wheelhouse . . . coaching up 3-star guys to play like 4/5 stars.
If you have to be in this position, Harbaugh is the guy you want to be in it with.

Even with the name recognition and recruiting prowess of this staff, it's difficult to take over an underachieving program in the closing days of December, assemble and then start recruiting and expect to walk away with heaping piles of success, but what this staff has managed to achieve is still great given the circumstances really. I mentioned it last night, but this class - however it shakes out - may just be a sign of good things to come when you look at how Harbaugh and this staff have managed to salvage, even add to it.
February 3rd, 2015 at 8:17 AM ^
I think many fans underestimated the challenges that you listed facing Harbaugh and his staff, and that we'll get a much more meaningful picture of how good their recruiting abilities are in 2016. However, I don't see what you're seeing when you use the word "great."

It's a timing issue. Those exact same kids would not have chosen Rutgers, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Mississippi over Michigan if it was October and not January. But to be honest, if it was October, I'm not sure how many of those kids Michigan would even go after.

5 spots isn't going to make a whole lot of difference to UM's futute success. Next year is important as Harbaugh will have a full year to establish relationships. At this point he hasn't had that chance.
The issue here is people had unrealistic expectations of what Harbaugh could accomplish in two weeks time. Now that they perceive that he is struggling to fill the remainder of this class they are biting their finger nails with worry.
In other words, simmer down now

Sometimes it seems like MGoBlog is Ground Zero for unrealistic expectations. Once the MGoHiveMind latches onto something, it takes on a life of its own like a speculative bubble in the stock market. Once it bursts, it's ugly and messy.

I would not be surprised to see us strike out on the rest of our top remaining candidates. I hate being a negative nancy, but its just a gut feel.
Maybe Harbaugh pulls a couple surprises tomorrow, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised.
If so, all I will be wondering is what the hell was Jay Harbaugh talking about when he said "a-maize-ing" things were happening yesterday?
