Michigan releases response... Can't say that I'm surprised

"wtf? why is there a kraft noodle advertisement in front of the stadium?"
that's not a noodle.
"it's a noodle. it has kraft's new tagline on it."
...what noodle?
"forget it. i saw you giving tickets away with the purchase of $3 worth of coca cola. wtf?"
that's not what you saw.
"i did. i saw..."
no you didn't.

While the statement outlines what should have happened -- evaluation by the medcial staff with the sole power to determine playable, I fear it may be a complete fabrication.
There were TV cameras and about 100,000 witnesses. Did anyone, literally any one person, see a neuro exam occur in the roughly 2 minutes of real time between being pulled and put back in? Seriously, anyone?
Bold move

I've had enough. I'VE HAD ENOUGH.
I WILL miss my first Football game in 8 years on Saturday for Michigan's Hockey season opener. I was considering it but this fuckery leaves me with no choice.
This has nothing to do with the play on the field and everything to do with the worthless administration.

As much as I despise Drew Sharp, I hope he absolutely skewers Hoke with questions during the Monday presser tomorrow. If any writer is gonna do it, it's him.
September 28th, 2014 at 9:44 PM ^
I cannot believe we are at the point where I am looking forward to a Drew Sharp piece. Did I enter the twlight zone?

The statement only addresses that Morris re-entered the game... not that his coaches left him out there to get beat up and likely concussed. This is completely dismissive and unacceptable. It also does not address if he was evaluated per the concussion protocol. I expect more from Michigan.
September 28th, 2014 at 9:07 PM ^
This statement just confirms that Hoke, Brandon and the Athletic dept are Tone-deaf, Arrogant, Clueless Assholes.
Folks...its time to boycott Michigan. What would they do if 50,000 show up vs. Penn State?
September 28th, 2014 at 9:07 PM ^
I used some on my precious Mgopoints to neg Civproprof. Seriously, man? Aside from the fact that we've gotten buried by non-powerhouses Utah and Minnesota and have shown no signs of competing with either dread rival lying in wait, you can't kool-aid away the negligence of Hoke in looking after his player's safety. And that statement is appalling. No mention at all of the concussion? And Shane could barely walk BEFORE the concussion and they left him in. After the concussion they left him in for what, 2 plays? then SENT HIM BACK IN.
September 28th, 2014 at 10:45 PM ^
Deserves to have all of his posts negged to hell and back just for being such a damn contrarian on the issue. However, they all seem to have been deleted anyway.

Hoke's presser tomorrow is going to be painful, maybe we'll get some real Q&A.
September 28th, 2014 at 9:13 PM ^
No.... no. It will probably be the most painful presser in the history of pressers. I expect absolutely nothing from this administration at this point except for flat out incompetence and lies.

I hope this just sends the students over the edge. We've seen after last year that they'll organize when their life is made difficult with regards to watching the football team. Maybe this time they'll organize to protect the players since the university seems to be refusing to do so.
A couple thousand kids outside either the AD's or President's office sounds like a good thing.
September 28th, 2014 at 9:12 PM ^
I would like to compliment the AD's legal staff for a carefully crafted statement which does not in any way propose to place any blame on the staff or the department for what seems like blatant maltreatment of an injured player. It surely takes some brass ones to be that formal and insensitive in such a moment.
Yes, I am a terrible mod for saying such a thing, but I am quite upset. I apologize.
September 28th, 2014 at 9:22 PM ^
To me this isn't just about the helmet-to-helmet. As I watched Shane struggle for multiple series to WALK I yelled at the TV for the coaches to get him out of there because he could only hurt himself, and the team, more. Instead, they just ignored the injury it seemed. When the cameras shot to him between offensive positions there were NO trainers around him, just Nuss.
The way this was handled from start to finish, and then putting him BACK in to take a snap is absolute bullshit.
FIRE HOKE NOW!

I am wondering if the rumored argument with Nuss and Hoke in front of Brandon centered around Hoke having Shane go back in! Does anyone know who actually sent Shane back in. I saw the video of Hoke signaling to roll the clock or run the play after Shane went back in.
Is there any further clarification on the Nuss/Hoke thing?

September 29th, 2014 at 12:05 AM ^
If that is what they are saying, then actually say it! They did not say anything even close to that!

has had 24 hours to deal with this.
This pile of garbage is his answer. Fire this man NOW!
September 28th, 2014 at 9:13 PM ^
John Bacon is right about this: the athletic department always makes things worse with its public statements of "clarification."
September 28th, 2014 at 9:15 PM ^
They will not admit that Hoke made a bad call. They will batten down the hatches and wait this one out inside Fort Schembechler.
My guess is they know this was poorly handled and a bad decision. However they have probably consulted their PR team and concluded that admintting it will hurt the program and school further.
Remember when PSU (Sandusky affair) and Ford (in the Firestone mess) did the same. Not saying this is at the same level, but neither turned out well.
Denying responsiblity will not satisfy the barbarians at the gate of Fort Schembechler. Hunker down DB!! It is going to be a long next couple days.

99% rhetoric unnecessary.

September 28th, 2014 at 9:15 PM ^
reflects the truth. Before you all discount it consider the impossibility of stnoewalling this if it is not and ask yourselves if the responsible parties would issue this statement if they knew it to be false.
For pities sake no one here or in the media or anywhere outside the university has done a medical evaluation of Shane. NO ONE!
Can any of you show me the actual concussion protocol used by the university? Not some NCAA guideline but the actual protocol? We all know there is one have any of you read it? Do any of you know what the players are taught with regard to concussions? Are they taught nothing? Are they given guidelines about assessing themselves or other players?
My point is that every one of those questions is going to be answered in the next few days. Once those questions are answered and the incident, if it truly is an incident, surrounding Shane is evaluated in the context of those answers then and ONLY then will we know the truth of this.
If there was a breach in protecting a student athlete we'll know and none of this angst will be required because the university will do the right thing. If there was no breach then things will move on as they should.
Yeah everyone is angry about the state of the program and looking for any excuse to bury those they want gone, but that is not the right way to proceed. If this proves unjust, and I have no idea how this will play out, and those of you looking for blood are successful in burning down this staff on a pretext, NO quality coach will come here. Then where is the program?
Assuming that all your accusations are valid it makes absolutely NO difference if Hoke is let go a week from now or tomorrow in terrms of the team. lack of a fair process makes every difference in the university's ability to hire a quality replacement. Should it turn out, that Hoke did not recklessly endanger Shane, then he shuold not and will not get fired and you can all look for another excuse.
If your charges on student endangerment are valid then Hoke must go, but if not then he deserves a chance to save the season.

Four modules make up the Concussion Action Plan
- RECOGNIZE the signs and symptoms
- REMOVE athlete from play
- REPORT to a coach, parent or athletic trainer
- RECOVER completely before returning to play
Shane obviously had signs of being concussed. I don't believe anyone is debating this.
He was not immediately removed from play.
The third is debateable.
He could not have possibly recovered completely.
There is also no way he was given a full exam in the less than 90 seconds of real time he was off the field. It is completely impossible. I've seen multiple exams, performed by different doctors. All of them take a lot more time than that.

Assess any symptoms of a concussion (anyone with a pair of eyes saw he had concussion symptoms after the hit)
Perform a cognitive assessment (basically test you ability to think coherently. An ImPACT test takes roughly 25 minutes)
Balance evaluation
All of this is to be conducted by the team physician in the locker room. In hockey if you have any sense of a concussion, you go to the dark room for testing. Even if you do not have one, you are in there for about a half an hour.
The above is the NCAA protocol that Michigan MUST adhere to. Whatever protocol Michigan has, they did not follow it. It takes longer than the roughly five minutes it took for Morris to go back in for Gardner to diagnose a concussion.

so lets suppose Shane refused to go down when Nuss told him to, and he stayed on the field. They then pulled him two plays later. Then Shane was evaluated during the game and found not to have concussion symptoms - why not come out and say something like "while the hit shown in the media certianly looked bad, and Shane seemed unstable, he was evaluated by our staff in the game, and afterward and found not to have a concussion. The instability was due to a leg injury and the pain from it" in this press release?
Because the lawyers are covering up the truth. They'll hide behind HIPPA next.

Oh and for those paying attention, this probably means you can kiss any hope of an imminent dismissal goodbye. If the AD wanted to can him, they'd just throw Hoke under the bus and be done with it. They're going to dig in and fight this one out instead. On the positive side (not sure that's the right word) this also means Brandon is putting himself in the line of fire, so if (when?) this story goes nuclear, it's going to be on him now too.
This hurts me so, so bad. There's like family, then friends, then michigan football in that order of things that I love. Really hurting about this shit
