Equipment: Michigan has 3 new sets of receiver gloves for 2014
So that whole "this may be my last thread for awhile" thing didn't last very long given it's national syllabus week.
So.....I figured I'd give an equipment change update.
I know.....some of you want to wring my neck for posting these, but this should be the last one of the season (unless another alternate happens which......../doom).
New receiver gloves! 3 sets of new ones. Michigan will finally wear the ones that make an image when you put the hands together. (Just don't get any celebration penalties)
The standard gloves that will be worn all season save 2 games-
The special Pink Game gloves that will be worn sometime in October.
I assume that the Pink Game this year will be a road game. Michigan's only October home game is 10/11. On 10/11, they'll be sporting a much different look. Wearing these-
Past equipment updates-
New adidas Shockwave socks for 2014
New adidas CrazyQuick shoes, Road Shockwave socks to be worn in 2014

You don't need the extra pressure of working OT to support your habit while you are trying to get a degree. He is going to have to lighten up on this stuff!

The pink thing is so annoying...
August 26th, 2014 at 4:43 PM ^
Maybe I lack imagination, but it's hard for me to envision someone deciding to have a mamography because Devin Funchess wears pink gloves for a month.

cuz I'm thinking you don't need to dump a bucket of ice water on your head to motivate you to donate to ALS research either.
August 26th, 2014 at 5:21 PM ^
The IBC is extremely narcissistic and sure, it's awesome to see some people get all wet... but ALS didn't have nearly the awareness that Breast Cancer does in our society. ALS made their budget in a month thanks to this, and they didn't even officially support it at the start - it was straight viral.
If the NFL really cared about disease awareness they wouldn't have fined Brandon Marshall for wearing cleats in support of mental health awareness, and rather than wearing pink for a month they'd be trying to get men to get prostate exams.
Oh, and while that month of wearing pink sure is pro-women, maybe suspend Ray Rice more than 2 games?

maybe if you saw the footage of what happened in the elevator you would understand the 2 games. I was upset with it until I heard the story and the fact that Rice won't allow them to show the video because it may make someone other than himself look bad.
August 26th, 2014 at 7:25 PM ^
But I don't understand how Rice could prevent the video from being released.

Not anymore. Now it's about marketing and saying "we have a cause!" We are saturated with pink in sports - pink gloves, socks, jerseys, facemasks, trim, women's teams wearing ALL pink (which, frankly, is just brutal to watch). It's to the point that it doesn't raise awareness moreso than the ire and annoyance of fans.
I'd be all for teams/leagues sponsoring a different cause every year. Breast cancer awareness is surely important (my wife has had a couple of scares, and dear friends have had breast cancer), but there are many other worthy causes that also need awareness.
I suspect that part of the reason why the pink thing works is that it is neutral as far as teams go. There are no teams I can think of that have pink as a primary team color, even in the WNBA.
August 26th, 2014 at 5:05 PM ^
But I'm a big boy and I'm not afraid to change my opinion on something when when I gain a new perspective.
August 26th, 2014 at 4:47 PM ^
It's overplayed at this point in a lot of ways. I am 100% anti-cancer. My mom is a cancer survivor, as are both granmothers (none breast cancer) but when the NFL sells pink shirts and 5% of proceeds go towards charity... it's all show and no go.
Do people with the ability to watch/regularly follow football not know to go get mammograms? Or does everybody like boobies and feeling good about themselves - so wear some pink?
August 26th, 2014 at 4:54 PM ^
I think the backlash is against the Susan G Komen's aggressive branding of everything pink and their litigiousness in defending that brand. Also they have a fairly high rate of "administrative costs" and have engaged in some other controversial issues that I won't mention due to their political nature.

...your last sentence hits the nail on the head. But I'm no health marketing person.

The pink never really bothered me at first. I thought it looked sweet depending on how the athelete wore it(i.e. socks, wrist tape, even some cleats). Where the whole thing lost me was when teams started to do whole jerseys.

I don't know who downvoted you, but to be honest, it seems like you've got more pressing things to worry about than your mgopoint total.

To me these are one of the oddest things that people buy. I mean where on earth would you wear these without generating a lot of strange looks and stares from people.
Unless you're a reciever for a football team of course. In that case they're as bad-ass as hell. But other than those guys I just dont get it.
And welcome back WD. FWIW I had 8 hours in the WD "I won't be posting again anytime soon" death pool but I think Iost to Timmay. He had six.
August 26th, 2014 at 4:50 PM ^
If you buy these just to wear around. If you use them to play football and your logo is a block M, then you are fine.
August 26th, 2014 at 4:50 PM ^
I really thought it was a WD aberration until I went to MDen and there was a display of receiver gloves behind the counter. People buy these things.
I mean, think about it this way, would you buy a Miguel Cabrera batting glove? What's the deal with receiver's gloves?

A guy near me wears them to every game. I'm sorry but it really seems quite...lame to me.
August 26th, 2014 at 4:56 PM ^
They seem like something you buy, maybe get autographed, and have them framed into a nice display piece for the man cave. I can't see people actually wearing these. It's kind of like replica helmets in that sense.
August 26th, 2014 at 5:01 PM ^
I wouldn't wear them, though. They'd go in the case.

Of course you wouldn't wear a pair of Funchess gloves, unless you have hands the size of Mickey Mouse's...
August 26th, 2014 at 5:08 PM ^
Some people do play pickup, rec, etc. football for fun and competition. And if you play, it is OK to wear gloves and use them (even if just a pick up game). If you were them for other reasons, then I cannot condone those.

You'd think no one ever boarded while they went to college the way he's milking this thing.
August 26th, 2014 at 4:53 PM ^
I'm the first in my immediate family to go to college. I have no idea what to expect.
August 26th, 2014 at 5:07 PM ^
Expect less. Undergrad is really just not very much work for most people.
Edit: also, congratulations on the "first in my immediate family" thing.
August 26th, 2014 at 4:46 PM ^
Well, it was pretty obvious who started this thread. You must have a lot of free time.
August 26th, 2014 at 4:47 PM ^
I know I had a bunch of free time in college. Why not?
August 26th, 2014 at 5:54 PM ^
Girls, beer, new friends, music, parties, homework. More or less in that order.
August 26th, 2014 at 4:50 PM ^
not as tough as you thought it was going to be, eh? You're going to find you have LOTS of free time. Don't spend it all googling WR gloves, ok?

So many gimmicks. Just win games. I hope players get used to all these wardrobe changes without affecting their plays.

It's safe to say the WD is quite confident that his classes should be easy. Take it easy on him fellas.
Safe to say I'm the Jabrill Peppers of my college classes. Youngest in them, most talented &come in with accolades in my field from HS level

I actually just sort of feel sorry for the guy at this point.
August 26th, 2014 at 5:36 PM ^
He's just a kid having some fun and I am pulling for him. I hope he takes the advice the board gave him a few weeks ago and studies his ass off and takes a shot at his dream of attending Michigan.

If a rando person said that and it wasn't clearly a joke (like he's terrible and old), then we'd be calling him a douchebag...
