Uniformz: Is this the UTL III vs. Penn State jersey?

Submitted by JR's Flow on

So I received the M Den's HTTV catalogue today and right on the first page was the disaster seen below.

Now the catalogue says nothing about it being the in game jersey but it is named: adidas 2014 Premier Navy #98 Night Game Football Jersey.

So does anyone now if this is a thing or not? If so, these could be up there with the MSU bumblebee jerseys.

To get this to show up here, you'll have to upload the photo to a sharing service and then use their embed code. Every service will generate it automtically now, I believe, so you can copy and paste that in the comment box, but before you do that, make sure you're in plain text mode. Also, you can use the tools available if you right-click on the image to resize it as needed to fit in the comment box (400-ish pixels for width).

EDIT: The link for the photo points to Google Mail, so you know.

God dammit. No more Adidas. Michigan is too big to be supplied by the secondary equipment provider. We need to get a petition going to urge Brandon to switch back to Nike after the contract is up next year.

Back then the Oregon football team only had 3 jerseys versus the 8 they have now and that's excluding the helmet and pants. Just look at the some hideous ProCombat unis Nike has made for the Buckeyes for any indication of what is possible for Michigan.

Michigan players have expressed a strong preference for Nike in over the years and most fans born after 1970 seem to prefer Nike as well. It would be a sad state of affairs if Brandon ignored the wishes of the players and fans so that the Athletic department could bank an extra million or two.

I like how you're finding a way to pin this on Brandon when the contract started in 2008. As detailed on mlive last year, Brandon is aware of the inferior product and has stated that UM will negotiate as they near the end of the contract (2016-17 season). However, they'll continue to honor the contract in the near future, despite the hiccups. Presumably, there are pretty steep penalties for breaking the contract, not the least of which is coming across to other apparel companies as a client willing to break a contract for greener pastures.

Yes. They make uniforms that 18 to 23 year-olds want to play in. They also make better cleats and other equipment. Opting for the secondary equipment provider against the wishes of your players and fans is no way to build a program.

That is a pretty awful jersey.  But, just because they are releasing that for purchase doesn't mean that Michigan will actually be wearing them for the game.  Let's wait until we hear an official announement to fully panic.

How about everyone just not panic at all? Do you know how often the bumblee jerzeys are brought up in conversation outside of fanatic boards like this one? Hardly ever. If you and everyone else are worried about "tradition", worry about the traidition of being a winning football program, a huge part of which invoves attracting recruits. And recruits, kids 15 to 18, love uniformz. Attracting recruits is the one of the most important things for regaining a tradition of winning. We are not Alabama. Unfortunately, we can no longer attract receruits by guaranteeing them wins and bowl games/playoffs. Unfortunately, the AD has to rely on bells and whistles, which old timers, i.e., anyone who was a fan before 2007, tend to find opprobrious. Perhaps that approach will change. I hope that will change.

Notice how our alternate uniforms never involve different pants?  Why would that be, if we are trying to attract recruits?  Don't recruits care about pants just as much as they care about shirts?

It seems to me that the only difference between the jersey and the pants is that people don't purchase replica uniform pants from the M Den (hopefully Wolverine Devotee will correct me if I'm wrong).  So there is no opportunity to make money with alternate pants, so there are no alternate pants.  So we can stop pretending that this is all about attracting better football players to Michigan, right?

Don't you hate pants?

I agree on the rationale for alternate jerseys.  But they'd probably sell more white pants than these jerseys.  They're clownlike.  Not a big deal for me, since I won't buy it and I don't have to wear it.  And it doesn't affect tradition.  Meh.

PS: I just shipped my pants.
