Hoke revealed first team OL today (in first padded practice).......
Okay.
EDIT: fixed to not scare people as much
Hoke says first team OL today was Mason Cole LT, Magnuson LG, Miller C, RG Glasgow/Dawson, RT Braden

I'd feel a lot more comfortable if they released a "five guys we're comfortbale with not getting blown 3 yards into the backfield on run plays" list.
says something a lot different than Nick Baumgardner's tweet. You gave me no choice other than to downvote that opening post.
The starting 5 on the OLine during the open scrimmage is the only one worth mentioning since Hoke said they plan to have the starters decided by the end of the second week of fall camp
As far as Kaliis and Bosch, even if they don't start, they will get a lot of reps. A team really needs to go at least &-9 deep on the line these days.
I guess there won't be blood on the field.
Time to crack each others' heads in.
But I doubt this will be the starting five come the scrimmage. Thinking Miller has been taking starting reps at center because Glassgow will be out.
I feel like the 1st team OL changed on a daily basis last August which also prompted some freaking out over inconsistency and lack of chemistry.
Fears which turned out to be completely unfounded.
Oh, wait...
I'm sure we'll find out soon enough how this is somehow all Taylor Lewan's fault.
Rightfully disgruntled pastor versus myself, winner take all, loser eats cap on video.
It would be in good fun (you know sans stomaching that).
Challenge issued.
(fine. sulks off into the distance.)
Just checked with my wife, she confirms she is indeed capable of decorating a cap-shaped cake. It will look really good, too.
So, challenge accepted.

hopefully you have an old hat.
You agreed, your wife witnessed. It is on.
Absolutely not a metaphor.
Figuring out how to bet on an o line is another thing entirely. Rb yards makes the most sense to me.
Which they shouldve done last year.
Could it be that maybe he's just that good at tackle? Obviously starting a freshman along the line is cause for concern, but maybe the guy is just a stud.(hopefully)
This whole Kalis situation is another story though. I also remembered how bad Miller struggled last year, he's like the oldest guy on the line. Maybe the light is finally coming on for him.
I can't even.
I just... I can't see one possible way to interpret this that isn't really bad. I was one of those last year, even after the Akron game, who was optimistic and claiming that the struggles were anomalous mental mistakes and the coaches would turn them around.
But I don't think that way anymore. As far as I'm concerned, this year, the coaches, primarily Hoke and Funk, are guilty until proven innocent.
I mean, the absolute best possible interpretation I can make of Hoke's announced lineup is that there are undisclosed injuries or discipline issues, and/or that Hoke had no clue about how this announcement would play in public (and how something plays in public is very, very important - see Rodriguez, Rich and a certain guitar solo). The most likely interpretation seems to me to be that Hoke and Funk have learned nothing from last year and have no clue how to put a decent OL on the field.
I am going to spend the weekend hoping that I am as wrong now as I was last year at the beginning of the year. But as of now, I think this smells like DOOM.
ways to interpret it and you can't find one positive? I don't give a damn who lines up, I am not around practice or off season workouts. I don't know the work habits or commitment of a single OL. I don't know what adjustments the new OC will make beyond building out from competence. Do you think he came here to be a casualty of Funk or Hoke's weaknesses? And seriously, how it's going to play in public? People care about how they play in public not not whose name got mentioned in early August. Lineup 5 DBs for all I care...as long as they can block and execute some semblance of a consistent offense.
If you've got a positive interpretation, I'd love to hear it.
To me, things like "motivating Kalis/Braden" etc. aren't positive. As others have pointed out, if you have to 'motivate,' or think you have to motivate, two or more of your most experienced and purportedly most talented guys at this point, that's bad, very bad, terrible horrible no good very bad.
Uh huh...
And a few years ago everyone was saying Ricky Barnum was going to be starting at center. I highly doubt this is what it actually turns out to be.
Hoke is just screwing with ppl and doesn't want to tip his hand. Not sure if there is really any point to do it but its his perogative.

let's be honest--is he capable of it. At some point I think that the concerns some of us held about this very nice guy's level of competence may have to be entertained as legitimate.
There was an argument to be made about the potential for a Bobby Bowden/caretaker kind of coach to succeed at UM with great assistants, but I don't buy it anymore. Managing such a huge enterprise in this day and age requires an astuteness that I'm not sure I'm seeing. Give him this year, by all means, but
All this proved is that Hoke wanted to try these 5 guys today. Maybe it's a starting lineup, but I'm guessing that this won't be the line he rolls out against App St.
but if Hoke is still mixing and matching on the OL after the scrimmage then it's time for major concern. I'm sick of that youth card. We should be able to field at least a mediocre OL.

Mags and Cole playing in each other's positions is interesting.

and make athletics part of the University's mission statement!

Hoke may be trying to demonstrate what happens when he "names starters" to/in the media.
Whirlwind internet bandwidth whipped firestorm with everyone's underwear in a complete pretzel twist.
"So boys, as you can see, that's why we don't name the starters"

Hire Mason Cole's line coach from HS. That is it.

I think its more of a mix things up type of deal, granted Mason is pretty good but this move either says two things. 1. Mason is really that good and is better then what we have, and if that is the case I would really cock my eye at player development because some of those other guys have been at Michigan for 2-3 years and you mean to tell me this frosh is better than the guys you recruited who had offers from all over the country? 2. Like I stated in the beginning he is just mixing things up to light a fire under some guys or just to try different combos. At the end of the day if Mason is that good then you have to play him, but Hoke better be sure because nobody wants to hear any youth excuse or any excuses for that matter this is a big year for him and he knows it so he doesn't have time to experiment. Also I wouldnt look for anything to be set in stone after 1 week of practice, we will have a better idea of the starters at the end of week to start of week 3.

I see motivation and don't think it'll stay this way.
