Okay.

EDIT: fixed to not scare people as much

Hoke says first team OL today was Mason Cole LT, Magnuson LG, Miller C, RG Glasgow/Dawson, RT Braden

I'm not optimistic about the OL, but it's impossible that this lineup will ever be used in a game. A starting five without Glasgow taking up a spot isn't real, sorry.

Per Nick Baumgardner Drake Harris is again sitting because of his much injured hamstring, and Countess is sitting because of a groin injury.

Hamstring, Harris has now pulled his left hamstring.  Time to cease all football activities with him, bring in a hamstring guru, and have him spend the next 12 months building up those muscles.

It's disturbing that Kalis isn't starting. I'm pretty sure he was dubbed "the most NFL-ready offensive lineman" coming out of high school, correct? And yet he isn't even starting for what is likely to be a raging dumpster fire of an offensive line this season. Let's hope it's just a motivational ploy from Fort Hoke.

This isn't personal against you, and it isn't even just about Kalis. It's just that last preseason people (including, I think, me) were making the same arguments as a way of maintaining optimism when the OL lineup was getting turned upside-down every week. And here it is happening again, and I can't just be optimistic that a bunch of guys have just gotten way better. It wasn't the case last year (well, Glasgow was good, but overall last year was a total disaster) and I have a hard time believing it will suddenly be the case this year.

It was my opinion that the best five should be identified NLT today.  Evidently Hoke didn't listen to me because three weeks ago when asked about the OL starters he said they would be identified NLT than the end of the second week.  More time than I would have liked but I've never coached football when the players didn't wear flags.  So why don't we cool our jets and see if his timeline from two or three weeks ago will hold up before we start wigging out.

See, the thing that scares me most is this isn't some one beat him out, they're moving people around from other positions to cover for him (and Bosch). The wholesale change just sounds like they're trying to bail out a sinking ship with not enough buckets.

Mmmm Hmmm

Or it could be that it is hard for a recruiting site to evaluate the mental side of things, and while Kalis may be physically ready he had some adjusting to do on the mental side, and the change in scheme did not help.

I have no inside information on the actual reasons, but I would imagine that it is not uncommon that certain physically mature players who could handle a more basic HS playbook have more trouble both with the more complex college playbook (and Borges was nothing if not complex) AND more complex college defenses.

Why would they worry about understanding other players' roles when they don't even know their own? The most logical reason for the alignment today is they're searching for answers at guard.

But with so little time to prepare for the season I would think the practice time is invaluable and that they wouldn't have a lineup that had no chance at all of actually being the starting line. It appears there is not one single spot on the line that's assured.

Let's see, 2/5 of the guys disappeared, another 2/5 aren't playing where we expected (or Hoke himself said they would be). I'm hoping Hoke is just using this as a motivational thing but the last two years constant shuffling spelled doom and time is quickly running out.

Agreed w/r/t a bad summer being a precursor for a bad season. But, I don't share your need for a deadline, Monday or otherwise. Camp is unbelievably long. Players get hundreds of reps and thousands of mental reps in the film room. The first line will be decided on the Monday before the opening game, which is the first non-camp practice. At that point, it is game week, which is a whole other routine. Until then, its camp, and there is a lot of mixing a matching going on (not only on the offensive line). Even then, you could go as far as the Wednesday before the opening game before deciding your starters, but that would make me close to panicking. I'd bet $1 that Monday before App St. is when we'll see our real first line.

This makes zero sense.  If Hoke trots out this line and it sucks, he should be fired before the end of the season.

I was thinking something similar to your first rhetorical question in that there is a possibility that this particular line could be serviceable. I'm not sure they need to be the hogs of redskins folklore in order for the offense to work and work well. the line could be a fence that bends a lot, as opposed to being an archipelago of massive bodies like last year, and Gardner could do wonders back there with the extra second they could give him.

What a ridiculous post. It's completely possible that there is no good 5-man OL on this roster. That can happen when you have virtually no upperclass linemen. So rather than evaluating talent, assessing chemistry, considering fit with scheme, etc., Hoke should just trot out the group that you expected because fans expected it?
Isn't it possible that the coaches have seen something you haven't? That's if we're even to believe that this is anything more than motivational. Plus, this could be evidence that Cole is really, really damn good and mature.
