Hoke revealed first team OL today (in first padded practice).......
Okay.
EDIT: fixed to not scare people as much
Hoke says first team OL today was Mason Cole LT, Magnuson LG, Miller C, RG Glasgow/Dawson, RT Braden
— Nick Baumgardner (@nickbaumgardner) August 8, 2014
Wellllllll. I guessed Braden at RT correctly. I don't think this is a good sign......
Wasn't today the first practice in pads?
THE SEASON IS A LOST CAUSE DEVOTEE! Wrapping yourself in your UTL3 jersey at night isn't going to help anything.
Per Nick Baumgardner Drake Harris is again sitting because of his much injured hamstring, and Countess is sitting because of a groin injury.
we can't have nice things
Hamstring, Harris has now pulled his left hamstring. Time to cease all football activities with him, bring in a hamstring guru, and have him spend the next 12 months building up those muscles.
It's disturbing that Kalis isn't starting. I'm pretty sure he was dubbed "the most NFL-ready offensive lineman" coming out of high school, correct? And yet he isn't even starting for what is likely to be a raging dumpster fire of an offensive line this season. Let's hope it's just a motivational ploy from Fort Hoke.
We are really going to need Kalis to step up and be a productive starter, no way around it
be that others are better or even that he's no longer into the rigors necessary to compete at the highest level.
Yes, just like last year. That was it. Worked out just fine. Nothing to see here. Nothing at all.
If others are moving ahead of him thats on him, it happens. It has happened before, it will happen again. You seem to be implying this is a coaching problem and I find that odd because how is Khalis being passed up if not by others being coached up?
This isn't personal against you, and it isn't even just about Kalis. It's just that last preseason people (including, I think, me) were making the same arguments as a way of maintaining optimism when the OL lineup was getting turned upside-down every week. And here it is happening again, and I can't just be optimistic that a bunch of guys have just gotten way better. It wasn't the case last year (well, Glasgow was good, but overall last year was a total disaster) and I have a hard time believing it will suddenly be the case this year.
It was my opinion that the best five should be identified NLT today. Evidently Hoke didn't listen to me because three weeks ago when asked about the OL starters he said they would be identified NLT than the end of the second week. More time than I would have liked but I've never coached football when the players didn't wear flags. So why don't we cool our jets and see if his timeline from two or three weeks ago will hold up before we start wigging out.
This means nothing. It's not shuffeling the line (yet).
Or it could be that it is hard for a recruiting site to evaluate the mental side of things, and while Kalis may be physically ready he had some adjusting to do on the mental side, and the change in scheme did not help.
I have no inside information on the actual reasons, but I would imagine that it is not uncommon that certain physically mature players who could handle a more basic HS playbook have more trouble both with the more complex college playbook (and Borges was nothing if not complex) AND more complex college defenses.

Going into last season, we were told that Kalis almost had his redshirt pulled off in 2012 and the staff really debated whether or not he would be an improvement. If he's not starting now then either something changed drastically or someone was way off base.
At Schembechler Hall haven't been reading their memos from the many experts on the outside looking in.
Have they even started 2 a days yet?
I think the lineup the week before the first game is the one that matters a lot more than this one.
I've seen three or four people mention this on the thread... by why in the world do they need to be pulling major motivational ploys on the first day in pads?
We can try to put a gloss on it. It's not guaranteed to be a disaster.
But it is likely to be.

Maybe. If things are back to "normal" Monday I can believe it... but if Kalis and Bosch are slacking on conditioning, that seems to be a bad sign in itself.
Why isn't TomVH holding me yet?
Because you touch yourself.
This makes zero sense. If Hoke trots out this line and it sucks, he should be fired before the end of the season.
if they did get your memo, they ignored it.

Isn't it possible that the coaches have seen something you haven't? That's if we're even to believe that this is anything more than motivational. Plus, this could be evidence that Cole is really, really damn good and mature.
